  1. Thanks for the heads up on that - I've now booked my place
  2. I wouldn't mind turning up just as a spectator. It's been many years since I've climbed, but I think a reminder of techniques would be good
  3. When are you going to get some work in more civilised parts of the country?
  4. So what you're really saying is that you can't be bothered and you want us to do your work for you? I'd love to see you try that when you're employed!!! You've been given an interesting assignment that is very straightforward. I think most people on this site would be happy to help and give you advice on where to find the info, but if you need motivate yourself as noone else is going to do it for you.

  6. A few pics from today's REME meet at Deepcut to whet you appatite for abusing yourself: Bikes, trees and utilities
  7. Ahem, back on track... ;-) Hard to say for sure just from that pic, but I see something similar a lot on Rosacea, especially Sorbus'. It's not vehicle damage, it's bark / sapwood necrosis. In this case it may be associated with the decay columb to the right of the pic. In Sorbus it's generally due to Nectria canker and can lead to basal / trunk failure.
  8. I'm going to be in Blandford on the Sunday, so I can be one of the gawpers blocking up the tiny A road Glad there were no casualties, other than the properties.
  9. Hope there are no casualties, either from the fire or the gawpers causing a pile up.
  10. I initially thought that too, but the holes are too large at 1cm. So, dunno
  11. Nesting birds, WHAT nesting birds? I was asking coz' I know when I've organised LA work at that time of year, it's easy enough to prune around the nest or just leave the tree for a few weeks. I'm interested in how you'd go about such a large scale tree removal when you have CROW 2000 et al to contend with as it's not something I know about.
  12. How many of Andy's Burnham team did MonkeyD have to quietly assassinate to get his crew shipped in, I wonder!
  13. I love the pics with the helicopter. You simply wouldn't get that level of effort over a tree in this country. Bet it took more than a couple of stakes and rubber strapping to keep it stable afterwards!
  14. Bonsai is about reducing a tree's vigour and growth as I understand it, so I'm a bit lost as to why this will encourage root growth Have you got any more details on this from you mate?
  15. On a slight tangent, how are you going to deal with nesting birds if you carry out the removals at that time of year? I'm genuinely interersted and not just being agent provoceteour .
  16. At the risk of being repetative... WOW! I haven't seen many C. kashmirianas and they've all been mere babies in comparison to that one, even after it's pruning.
  17. Really? TBH, I have only the flimsiest knowledge of the landscaping world and the qualification heirachy is an unknown to me. Still thought I'd dive into this thread regardless of that!
  18. Damn! That's my beach holiday with my old 020 by my side out the window then
  19. Hang him!!! I'm with Steve on this - if he's working as a landscape architect, no matter what his quals are, then surely he's entitled to say as much? If he didn't claim to be chartered then I can't see that there's any problem. If the other persons in the conversation assumed he's chartered then it's their mistake.
  20. Perhaps they were thinking of Quercus castanifolia?
  21. Life has a perverse tendancy of doing that to you: just when you think all's going well, something happens to make you question everything! I'm very sorry to hear that about your mum. No matter what the outcome, you will make the best choices and come out all the stronger for it. Take care.
  22. That's a very familiar feeling! I've found a similar story amongst a lot of LA types (yes, I know that's not the same as you Higher Beings at The Corp' ): The original post had been withdrawn and the only option was to accept the more supervisory role or face redundancy.
  23. There have been many posts about what got people into tree work, but I have been wondering what makes other people stop the "on the tools" part of the job and move on to something less physical. Was it a conscious decision? Was it forced on you by circumstance? Do you regret the move? I'd been a climber / arborist for only about five years when the bloke that I was working for totally fubar'd the felling of a 20m cherry and ended up dropping it on me and his truck! Luckily, the truck took most of the impact and I got away with only a badly sprained ankle and the Mother of all headaches. However, it seriously affected me mentally and I'm not ashamed to say it scared the cr*p out of me - to the extent that I had to rethink what I was doing in my career. To be fair, I was never that great at climbing and this was the impetus to move on to doing something more office based. I don't regret the move, but I really miss the physical work and being part of a close team.
  24. Do you think the weight increase is a deliberate ploy to make people more likely to use it two handed?
  25. I was always told to avoid burning cherry laurel as it contains cyanide. I don't know how accurate that is. Try it and see: if you turn blue then it's true
