  1. Give it a few more years and I'm sure socks and sandals will become strangely appealing . Speaking to one of the organisers, the event will be aimed more towards those with a general interest and those who like to eat their finds rather than specific wood decay fungi. But it will still be an incredibly informative few days.
  2. I think this may be of interest to to odd mushroomophile here : Music Workshops
  3. What may make OPM more immediately relevant to a lot of Contractors (if I have read the briefing correctly) is that there are restrictions on the movement of oak arisings out of the affected London Booughs. Though how that will be policed I'm not sure. They really are nasty wee critters and their potential for harm shouldn't be underestimated.
  4. I was lucky enough to see a spectacular display in Iceland a couple of years ago . It would be amazing to be able to see them in this country, but I wonder if there's too much light polution even in the wilds oop norf?
  5. So THAT'S why I was underwhelmed with birthday greetings
  6. An ability to click the link! LoL. It's not a job that would suit me, but I found it while hunting and thought it may be good for others on this 'site.
  7. I have far, far too many favourite trees to have just one! Deodar, Betula albosinensis , Pinus patula, Malus trilobata (sorry, the English names escapes me for the moment), Brewers spruce... They're all in my ever changing top ten. The birch has the most attractive, peeling, multi toned bark ever.
  8. Soil type (and distance from foundations)? Aspect? Exposer? Give us a few basics and we'll be able to specify your perfect tree. Quite possibly it will still be a Sorbus!
  9. As it says on the tin . Part time (weekend) Ranger position working around Burnham Beeches: LG Jobs | Jobs | Show
  10. Yeah, I couldn't open the front door because of the mountain of cards...

    OPM

Small OPM nest just above the buckled fibres, showing how difficult they are to spot.
  12. That sounds like a great idea ! You can add me to the list. (Weather permitting, I'm planning on going there Sat 19/02, if anyone else wants to join me and laugh at my ident attempts).

  14. Mike Turner in his talk at the LTOA Quarterly said that the affected limbs were predominently those of the lower crown, typically in the first three ranks and in the inner canopy. He also said that infected limbs were easy to attribute to natural limb dieback and shedding because these are exactly the type of branches you would expect to be shed. I wish I'd had the opportunity to ask him more about this as, to my mind, there could be an argument that Massaria is only very weakly parasitic and is exploiting the reduced vigour in the branches the tree is preparing to annexe and shed. The figures he gave were alarming, but I would be interested in the data collected on the number of dead / dropped branches that couldn't be attributed to anything other than the tree ridding itself of energy inefficient limbs. Any thoughts on this? Also, there was anacdotal mention of different clones being more suspectible. Following on from that, has there been any incidences in P orientalis or P occidentalis - or even different genera??? Enlightenment sought
  15. That's a stunning pic! Did you use a filter or is that totally natural?
  16. Kanzan cherry. They're just too obscenely PINK! Full of canker and deadwood when they're not being PINK.
  17. What's best for the tree is to leave it well alone! That doesn't tend to go down too well with either your customers or your bank manager though
  18. Leaflets are opposite each other on the midrib for Dawn redwood
  19. Swamp cypress - Taxodium disticum - for the first tree. One of the deciduous conifers. Cupressus glabra for the second.
