  1. Are you going to be our tour guide for the day, Lee? I have images of an exasperated head master trying in vain to keep some sort of order and herd his over exited charges Although it's been a few years since my "friends" pass has expired, I know Kew quite well if you want a hand.
  2. This is really out of date now, but this old Capel post may provide a starting point for you: http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/capel-manor-college/25094-apprenticeships-roadshow.html
  3. I've just heard a trailer for tonight's Countyfile. Something about who's got the UK's tallest tree; Wales or Scotland. I'm sorry, I haven't got any more details, but it might be worth watching (if it doesn't clash with MotoGP).

    Swa

You can talk - you got there from N Ireland!!!
  5. The walk and foray you took some of us on in Whippendell last year was an exceptional day out. I hope that this will become a regular annual feature in our calendars? Being shown around a woodland by someone who knows it intimately and loves being there is so much more enjoyable than an aimless bimble
  6. That definately makes it into my top ten.... of worst films ever!
  7. You're stepping very close to blonde-ism there, Hama (Sorry, nuthin constructive to add at this point )

    Uh-oh

You mean you're not supposed to do it that way??? Even without training, you would have thought common sense and self preservation would have stopped them from trying that?
  9. Glynn Perceval (ISA P&D Kew, 08/03/11) recommends plain old woodchip. He's currently researching the effects of different species of chip on weed suppression, but for general soil improvement and moisture retention any chip is good. As he's kinda knowledgeable on these things, I'm not going to argue with that!
  10. Try this: Birch Wine Recipe If you don't gone blind or mad let us know what it's like
  11. In Islington, that's exactly what they do (or did). I don't know if it's still their policy, but when I was there EVERY tree to be felled as a non emergency was postered prior to it's removal and the relevent Cllrs were notified as to the tree, it's location and the reasons for it's removal. And if there was any debate, then felling was postponed. Talk about a right pain in the a.... It's a great example of politics taking precedence over good tree management practise and wound me up no end. Anyway, sorry Ham, back to giant polypores
  12. The feral Funghunter; his exuberance cannot be caged
  13. I forgot to post this earlier. I think it perfectly captures the Funghunter in his natural environment
  14. Nice place for a bimble. It's an interesting example of phenology as well as the trees down my way (London) are so much more advanced.
  15. I love piccy #4: while eveyone elses' backs are turned you can't help but sneak off to get another photo. Looks like a really ggod day.
  16. Me too . But the original question was what's the legal requirement, which is not the same as best practise.
  17. Sorry, I got a bit overexcited by the idea of such a good day trip with so much opportunity for knowledge sharing
  18. Again, these are for guidance and are not legal requirements. I may be being a bit pedantic (anal? ) but there is a difference there.
  19. Perve. Can we just stick to the tree stuff, please?
  20. Now that sounds like a VERY good idea . Burnham Beeches, bats and a couple of fungsters as well? That would be fantastic. Can I sign up now?
  21. There is no statute or common law requirement that you have to wear CS gloves while using a ground saw. Any PPE requirements are guidance and industry best practise, but if it all goes T up then it will be down to you to explain why you chose to ingnore the guidelines. You will need to have a RA to show why and how you came to your decision. And if wearing gloves is part of your contractual requirements, then just do so, as wet and cumbersome as they are.
