  1. I'm just being a tight a... erm, bottomed person and worried about committing myself to something I may not be able to afford In principal I think it's a great idea and something I'd really want to do.
  2. If you want to approach a couple of larger firms, Gristwood and Toms HQ is in Shenley and Barletts have an office in Radlett, both of which are in Herts just outside of the M25. Is that's any good for you? I know they're not in the counties you said, but they're not too far away.
  3. For all you other TV junkies out there, tonight's episode is worth watching more than usual: "Comedians Paddy McGuinness and Rory McGrath travel Britain, partaking in the most unusual games and pastimes the country has to offer. Paddy is on home turf as he and his southern counterpart head to the north of England. While there, the pair partake in a spot of chainsaw sculpture, some dry stone wall building, a little historical re-enactment and a fair smattering of drinking." Unfortunately, it clashes with the God that is David Attenborough on Beeb 2, so I'm in a quandry as to which one to lunch out in front of...
  4. Sounds like a good idea, Paul. I'm sure it will be of interest to a fair few of us here. If it wasn't so far Oop Norf, I'd be putting my name down for it as well
  5. Eejits and chainsaws are always and entertaining combination!!!
  6. Eejits and chainsaws are always and entertaining combination!!!
  7. Looks like a good read Sean. Perhaps you can post an extended synopsis when you've gone through it ?
  8. My legs ache just watching that!!! Well done Littletree
  9. ... And miss chatting with you? I have checked the Met Office 'site and as I seem to have misplaced my Ark, I'm being a soft southern girlie and staying well away from the outdoors today. I'm nowhere near The Hama's level of obsessiveness when it comes to getting wet in the search for fungi! I'll be watching "Deadly 60" instead - and I have to admit, it's one of my guilty pleasures and I try to watch it when it's on...
  10. It's ok Monkey, you're amongst friends here. You don't have to pretend you were only watching CBBC for the kid's sake
  11. Forest Research - Publications - Tree pest and disease alerts and advisory notes is a good starting point. (love the signature, btw )
  12. Tis easy. Speak to someone from the LA, either your nice, friendly TO or some one in Land Registry. All LAs will have a list or map of their properties and they should be able to tell you if any particular address is private or LA owned (NB - housing assoc' properties are private, despite what the residents insist).
  13. The brackets immediately around the tree's base are Meripilus. I do believe there's a bit about them on the Fungi Directory
  14. Is BB still on for either the 2nd or 3rd? I'll let you have the pleasure of my company if it is
  15. A degree Or a pony, I can't quite decide...
  16. Hmmmm, nice for showing off all those scrapes and scratches I suppose. Are you aiming for the desperate housewife market with those scimpies?
  17. Gender is not the most important issue: your own individual strengths (and weaknesses), qualities and and attitude are. Don't make your gender an issue, just be the best arb' you possibly can be. I consider myself simply an arboriculturalist, NOT a female arboriculturalist, and I neither expect or get any allowences or special treatment for my gender. I don't need it - I'm good at what I do! I did use to find the physical side of the job a challenge sometimes, as I'm 5'5'' and only 7 and 1/2 stone, but there are ways around this and and I more than made up for it with determination. As for that 10k you quoted, that's poor, even for a trainee position. I'd want all my PPE, training and tickets supplied for that kind of salary, and I'd still want a raise!
  18. C&G Phase II Amenity Hort (Arb) can be taken as a one day a week course, but it's fairly basic entry level. AA Tech Cert is mid level, one day a week or home learning. Umm, RFS Cert is also one day at college or can, again, be done via home learning (the trheory part, anyway). Get Googling

Cheers, I'd best bin my copy and look at the stuff I'm advising others to look at!
  20. courses: evening classes part time courses: undergraduate postgraduate courses is a good place to start. You could also try Hort Week events, Woodland Trust, Forestry Com' etc for one day events and training. Do you know what course you want to do? Is it for personal interest or do you want to further your career? There's loads of stuff out there, but you have to give us clue about what you're interested in doing!
  21. All the replies are not a great advert some som of the arb' courses available, and mine is going to add to that. I took the ND Arb' at Capel Manor College with the understanding that I would get all my tickets. Surprise surprise, I ended up having to pay for them all myself and from another training provider The only thing I can say about your situation is that if you have it in writing what will be provided by the college, and they have failed to do this, then that's surely got to be breach of contract? Where's a legal trained AT when you need one??? I'd have thought you should be able to get a refund at the very least. Try and stick with it for the second year though, because you'll get your qualification at the end of it, even if it means you have to do your tickets elsewhere.

Google NJUG 10, as it's free to download from the site that I can't quite remember the address of just now
  23. That's really poor service and very unprofessional of them. What would have happened if you cureent employment relied on getting this qual'??? At the very least they should reinburse you for your travel and wasted time.
  24. Yes, it's Fulham Palace. I thought I'd mingle with the beautiful people (and lower the tone!) for a bit. I hadn't been there since way before the renovation, when I'd done some work there.
