  1. 'Mates you can rely on are few n far between' How true. I have just two and they saw what they were dealing with which is why one is in Newcastle and the other a stone's throw from John O'Groats.
  2. Hmm. Oak gets hot all right; it just doesn't make a song and dance about it. How many moisture readings have you taken? Take a few from different logs in different parts of the pile. Worth cutting one or two to measure the inside. But after two years under a lid I'd expect those to dry unless the air doesn't move. Perhaps open the vent on the burner a bit.
  3. When you say doesn't burn very well do you mean with little flame - the stuff sort of sits there glowing? That'll be oak.
  4. Looks right. It flowers on old wood so cutting the growth back every year = no flowers on that part of the shrub.
  5. I've worn Stihl brushcutter strides for years; very hardwearing, they last well. Have they simply been renamed hedgecutting trousers?
  6. I'd never heard of hedgie trousers either. They wouldn't have helped...
  7. So if you had the Aspen with you anyway what was it for if not the splitter? Coffee substitute for breaktime?!
  8. Jesus H Christ. Up to 30 seconds I thought 'big deal' but after that... ?
  9. For a price there's a 2.3L twin turbo Navara with 8-speed auto box that I'm told is a joy to tow with. But the price...
  10. Fungus spotlight: Phaeolus schweinitzii – Arboriculture ARBORICULTURE.WORDPRESS.COM A little look into the brown rot fungus Phaeolus schweinitzii. Perhaps a first step is to inform the owner of the tree; Local Authority or private? In brief this fungus is bad news for the tree in the long run.
  11. Silliest idea yet - break the crown down and leave the lot where it is for habitat.
  12. Perhaps Dyer's Mazegill (the common name for this one) is easier to remember?! ?
  13. A Loadhandler if you have/can arrange a horizontal tailgate for unloading? It wouldn't be good for full loads probably (too much weight) but for lesser loads perhaps a winner.
  14. The Clifden Nonpareil?
  15. Fair enough - just trying to help a fellow Aspenator!
  16. Not arguing with you - you're in Devon, I'm not - but I've just looked at the Aspen dealer locator for Devon and there are 14 in the county, fairly evenly spread. Worth a look?
  17. ...but still chips 4". That's asking a lot. I know Greenmech, Jo Beau claim 4" for the CS100 and M300 (which I've got) but achieving it takes management of the piece, i.e. holding it and feeding it gradually. I've actually chipped bigger than 4" dia but not by simply chucking the branch in. But isn't a 4" dia branch firewood as per your first post?
  18. I'm not sure how big your plant is but MP seedlings are extremely susceptible to damping off; from reading online instructions on germinating seed and developing plants it seems that most of the effort goes into avoiding it. Could that be the explanation?
  19. No; I'm more in line with AJStrees up the road here in Caterham though I would say definitely not the worst year. The intensity of attack has been worse, i.e. greater browning of leaves.
  20. Well yeah OK! Still not to be seen as valuable though.
  21. Good positive post there; great stuff. Glad NZ has worked out for you. The weather's still as unpredictable here!
  22. What's stopping you Robert? The logs were free so does it matter if they turn out to be no good for turning? I reckon they could be though, especially if you can find a good-sized crotch piece. But even if not Leyland makes very decent firewood. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
  23. My guess is that the tree would survive - olives are very resilient. But take it back and get a replacement; the garden centre need their arses kicking for selling it in that condition without agreement that it's 'bought as seen'.
  24. I'd have been so unworried about it I wouldn't have even thought of it!
