  1. You could cut that off at the ground at any time and it would come back; they're nigh on indestructible. Don't be shy. I wouldn't even be concerned about a spell of hot dry weather after a hard prune; their roots run so deep
  2. Nothing to do with rats but until recently I used rapeseed oil for my saws; one client's labrador spent half a morning licking the oil side of the combi can spotlessly clean, crusty bits and all

  6. I was in Caithness last week; heard one in the Flow Country at Forsinard, then the next day saw and heard three of them - often squabbling - 15mins down the A99 from Wick in country similar to the Flow but more undulating. Sorry to be a Johnny two shits @Billhook but it's the truth, honest
  7. Beat me to it; are telephone numbers not 'personal information'? Presumably they'd have names attached. Coincidentally my house is called Old Oak!
  8. Are you sure it's the motors dying? I have a Husky battery polesaw that packed up and 'dead motor' was the first and wrong diagnosis; it actually needed a new main loom which I guess had broken somewhere due to repeated folding and extending
  9. ...was a weekly affair among the road gangs resident in Kilburn and thereabouts though not necessarily with such classy outfits. The guys got paid on Thursdays, went shopping for a suit and wore it for the week - at home, down the pub, on the roads. The local drunks up and down the High Road - and there were a few! - were always in a suit!

  13. No, the slimy little buggers will happily fell stems and move on to the next one. We struggle to grow asters or clematis here because of them; the traditional slug food like brassicas seem to do ok though Have a gentle scratch through the mulch near the plants and see what's under there; you're probably looking for <10mm grey slugs
  14. Slugs? The one downside of mulch; they live under it
  15. That's odd; goldies seem to be doing well everywhere I go
  16. A couple of pairs of regulars on the feeders here, now bringing their babes. A couple of greenfinches for two days last week too, one of them a fledgling. There are four nuthatches knocking about; two adult, two young with fluffy bits. One of them flew into a window yesterday (we get so many doing that); wifey picked it up, perched it on the oil tank under their favourite oak and half an hour later it was gone thankfully
  17. Makes sense. A vet attending the cull said he didn't expect any further outbreak locally due to the higher temperatures. Hopefully the locals will be able to let their chooks out again soon 🤞
  18. A lot of timber in that. I glanced at the first pic and wondered which of the three trees you were referring to!
  19. Any signs of bird flu near you AJS? We're in a confinement zone for now as a breeder had his entire flock culled last week due to the disease
  20. There's plenty of blackthorn here, don't worry! To the South Downs again and there's a constant battle against it to preserve the traditional, if artificial, landscape of the sheep-grazed Downs. You often see plumes of smoke where heaps of the stuff has ben grubbed out and is alight
  21. Yes, that too down here in the south east. It seems people have maybe learned to stop hacking the things to bits and actually letting them show themselves off at last. The pollinators love them too
  22. Certainly agree re the may. I've seen both the South Downs and the Dorset Downs today and they are spectacular though I wonder if some of it isn't blackthorn - too late for that maybe? There's an armchair shaped valley in the South Downs against the south side of the A27 on the north edge of Hove where there are now almost no gaps in the scrub; if left alone I suppose it will soon become woodland. It's a stunning sight in the sun just now
  23. Vic Muggeridge trading as ML Contractors? Mentioned this topic to a mate earlier and he came up with that name. He drove the lorry (which btw was ag registered so run on red!) a few times doing street trees in Wandsworth and said that when they turned up in a new street they'd see residents dashing to put their bins out 😂
