  1. Have fun getting dirty mate
  2. It might help folks if you said what area you are looking at
  3. The main thing HMCE is worried about is revenue loss. Other authorities have their own mandates and agendas. VOSA kicked my arse for running a tractor and trailer to shift round timber. Had to explain myself to the traffic commissioner to save my "O" licence.
  4. Blasting needs a lot of air, a screw (hydrovane) compressor is your only candidate, as well as that and a blasting pot you will need an air fed helmet, you can do without for a one off job but a balaclava and goggles is for the brave. A 10 gallon pot is a small thing to take a wagon chassis on with I have owned blasting pots in the past, now I get a bloke in to do the job.
  5. Bring back steam, the trackside burned regularly, no need for cutting
  6. Agreed, but twice in the past I have been caught up in a visit on a building site, once I was there to give a quote so got a free pass, the second time they wanted to see all the paperwork and then some
  7. The HSE are of the opinion that you owe a duty of care to everyone, including yourself. The rules and regulations apply to the self employed one man band as much as anyone else
  8. They sent it through a bunch of mature Rhodies near me, it made a god awful mess
  9. Tree care on the rails? They call it vegetation management, bring on the big chipper and the flail train What area????
  10. Only if they specify it at the time of interview, if they then employ you (on the books) they become responsible for any renewals.
  11. Tack nail a vee shape on a board and drop the workpiece in that, it needs to be slightly lower than the thickness of the workpiece and you need the belt to travel in the direction of the vee.
  12. I had a go at sharpening a silky, just out of interest. The induction hardening goes deep enough that you can get a new edge in it and still retain the durability (depending on how bad it was to start with) I wasn't overly happy with the finish, it didn't glide like a factory finish but I keep one back for sacrificial works like cutting roots. I am saving all the wrecked ones and when I have enough I will forge them into a Katana:laugh1:
  13. You missed the point, you said they cant be sharpened yet they are sharp when they arrive so they must be able to sharpen them. Re sharpening is difficult to the point of becoming uneconomical but they can be sharpened.
  14. A pulley is far from a necessity, you can work perfectly well without one. There is every point learning the "old" way, everyone who goes up a tree should be able to tie and work off a three knot system even if they use another system
  15. An employer cant require you to have a first aid qualification unless they make holding it a condition of employment, once you are an employee the employer becomes responsible for your first aid training. The First Aid at Work (FAW) qualification is usually a three day course and an assessment. A single day course would be appointed person and has no formal assessment.
  16. Nope, both systems use one rope but single uses it single and double uses it doubled
  17. In a word, none
  18. I am sure I have seen that somewhere before............................. Is there a record for how many times the same picture appears in different threads
  19. Yes, its a hydraulic operation pack for a tirfor They are fortunes to buy new and make a heavy lump of kit impossible to lug around.
  20. Why have you got 2 left legs?
  21. I don't know if you are right there Rupe, you can tell them what to do while they are on the clock but not on their own time, if they present unfit for work you can take action but sacking them for a sporting injury is probably heading for a tribunal
  22. It tends to be the fact that its also gearbox oil complete with all the detritus and ferrous particles that kills the hydraulic system. Back end oils and filters seldom get changed and when they do the gearbox has lots of lovely ribs and corners to keep the crud in there that getting the job done well is nearly impossible.
  23. Older tractors use UTO or SUTO but modern ones use some pretty expensive fancy back end oils.
  24. I recon use ISO32 and put the engine oil in an engine:laugh1:
  25. Not in a hydraulic system it wont
