  1. It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money -- that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot -- it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better. John Ruskin (possibly)
  2. I thought that but then why not? its a perfect first tree to be practicing on
  3. Not right away mate, you can wing it on ag till you get caught, pay the fines then get an "O" licence, but they might not want to give you one because of the convictions.......
  4. I think your truck looks the dogs and your pictures are very nice, I had one just like it ten years ago and it was a great tool, I hope it serves you as well as mine did (but just hope the front axle doesn't give you any trouble) Unfortunately you are telling bare faced lies to the good people of arbtalk, you have lied to the forum expecting us to believe your outrageous bull about exemptions for winches and roadside trees. I know you only wanted a picture show but you cant treat people like idiots and expect no response and expecting the thread not to go the way is has is naive to say the least. Whoever you spoke to has given you the wrong information but I suspect that's got a lot to do with the way you phrased the questions and interpreted the answers you got Either way, unless you have something valid in writing from them about not needing an "O" licence the guys at the side of the road are just going to say it needs a licence and here is your bus ticket cos this is impounded. You may be prepared to wing it until you get caught but you shouldn't lie to people encouraging others to do the same without giving them fair warning of the consequences.
  5. You can register it as whatever you want, it comes down to use and you have already said it is used for commercial tree work so when you speak to the authorities don't be surprised when they say it needs to be on an O licence.
  6. You can but the parts individually the pump can be the size of your choice, it fits on a gearbox that either hangs on your PTO output, or driven by a PTO shaft Check out flowfit on ebay for parts
  7. It needs to run at 1000 rpm or it wont work at all The blade anvil gap needs to be a couple of MM, as with all angle feed machines. If the gap is too big it will take thin branches and "sliver" them before chucking it into the outspout to block it.
  8. I am pretty sure that's not a front mount. Its a Ganadini chipper badged as a Turner which now trades as Greenmech, Pete B will be able to give you chapter and verse on it. Its a good chipper, the one I owned was bomb proof.
  9. Any pump will run any ram, some quicker some slower. The force exerted by the ram (on the outward stroke) will be a function of the internal diameter and the pressure of the oil. The speed will be a function of the internal diameter and the flow If the internal pump on the compact isn't man enough for the job consider a PTO mounted pump.
  10. Oh I knew it wasn't raining alright, all those hard to answer questions should have told you that much
  11. So why piss down my back and tell me its raining? If you were going to lie you could have just said it was on an "O" licence and left it at that
  12. So to sum up, no exemption of any kind and winging it on agricultural?
  13. So did they give you a letter or anything? How will you prove exemption when you get pulled? I only ask because none of the above adds up to an exemption under the law as it stands. There is no exemption for vehicles fitted with a winch (factory fit or otherwise), none for cutting roadside trees and none for holding any contract with anyone, and no exemption for any combination of any of the above.
  14. I don't dislike it, I love it. Can I see a copy of the letter or whatever they gave you? I want to get one just like it. I just cant get my head around the reasons you gave. A winch? hardly unique. Roadside trees, what ALL THE TIME, anyhow the exemption that exists for that is for fuel not "O" licencing Can you clarify please
  15. I do try hard though:laugh1:
  16. Then its low but not tragically so.
  17. I thought fully qualified was, well when there aren't any left to do but that's another story. Did you pay for the courses or did your employer?
  18. Define fully qualified
  19. Go on then, I will rise to it. What were the correct channels? What you described at the start of this thread was a mixture of several regulations some of which do not apply to "O" licencing, and none of it fits with the published exemptions. The entire thing reeks of BS to me but I will withdraw and apologise profusely when you show us all the "correct channels".
  20. I had one on a seven and a half tonner, it was fixed at the front and had a pocket stitched along the width at the back, the pocket had a length of 25mm box in it and at each end a tape for a ratchet strap, the ratchet head was welded to the rear upright post and the strap ran over a round bar welded to the inside of the rear post at the top. When you tensioned the strap the round re directed it to pull the sheet tight
  21. Jonny is looking for a cheaper way of doing things but he doesn't have one of your "I am an arborist" general exemptions:laugh1:
  22. Be carefull what you buy, I was once the proud owner of a defender that had been caught on red twice by a previous owner and had a marker on the computer I was on first name terms with the blokes at the local stop check.
  23. Same here, the building owners wont allow it because their policy has an exclusion on storing fuels. I could probably build an external fuel storage a minimum of 5m from the building but I am sure to run into problems with bunds and fuel thieves.
  24. Nice work that, I will be even more impressed if its still alive
  25. Nothing is impossible, but often lack of effort makes it seem that way
