The PPE is a given, then you need to be able to operate a saw, rescue can come later, the ability to tow a trailer (bigger than a wheelbarrow) would be a distinct advantage. -
The unemployed don't effect me, and I am not aware of anything they do to make me go bust, by and large I just drive past them without a second thought, as for "retests" I have just paid for my MANDATORY medical to retain my LGV licence, not much uproar from professional drivers.

Mate, its just the cost of doing business How much for a suite of NPTC certs, Insurances, Saws, PPE? How much in overloading fines at a pound per kilo? How much time lost in extra trips to tip off or run more than one vehicle?

You can do a test for a 7500kg truck. Without checking as I remeber it takes you to 8250kg on a rolling load. You have to get an MOT for a van so I don't see your problem with that and the checks aren't crazy, they are very simple and they are relatively few and far between. I know these forums make it seem like its onerous but taking that opinion from a place where people often come to complain about things is a mistake. Given the number of people on forums who profess ethics professionalism and high standards about tree work its a shame we can't project that professionalism onto running vehicles.

There are a couple of considerations, yes the tree would be damaged, all pruning damages trees but they tolerate it to varying degrees. You should also make sure the tree isn't protected by a Tree Preservation Order or by a Conservation area. In England you have the common law right to cut the branches back to the boundary (subject to the protection mentioned above). The branches belong to the tree owner, if they don't want them you can dispose of them an any way you can conscience, if you return them to the owner be careful not to damage anything. Given the sap issue I am going to guess its a sycamore and its actually the aphids that are causing the problem, pruning back will help but the "honeydew" (read aphid poo) will drift on the slightest breeze.

They aren't any sort of legal requirement because there is no law requiring their use. What happened is a manufacturer decided that it would be a good idea to make them and the working groups (with HSE oversight) that write our industry best practice said, "well we might as well include them" while they may be a requirement for an NPTC assessment that is far from making them any sort of legal requirement. Wearing cut protective gloves is a matter for your risk assesment

He isn't a Duracell:laugh1:, the charge cant stay in him and if it passed through it would have boiled any fluids, if it is real and I don't think it is, the charge must have tracked through his clothing or water on it. A few years age we ran for cover from some heavy rain. As we watched lightning struck the tree we would have been working on and blew lumps of it weighing in at several kg 50m into a field. A dray became instant crispy critter.
