  4. Hi guys, my names Ed and I’m fairly new to he forums. I left school last year and started my search for a career. I had been working whilst at school as a landscape gardener and I thoroughly enjoyed the days I spent outside even when it was raining and I was soaking wet I was glad I wasn’t in a classroom so I knew I wanted to work outside. I always enjoyed the arb aspects of my summer job, trimming a few hedges and dragging brash around so I began a search for a apprenticeship in Tree Surgery, I wrote to 11 different local company’s and applied at dart training to see if they could find me an employer, no luck. Out of The 6 companies that replied to me 1 was willing to take me on as a labourer but was not willing to offer put me thru any training. The other 5 either didn’t have any vacancies or expressed concerns over the paperwork regarding taking on a apprentice. I also offered to work voluntarily on the off day for a few company’s purely to gain experience, however again these companies had concerns regarding paperwork and employing young people. So I ended up taking a offer of an appentiship in bricklaying and it’s going well. I’m 6 months in and have passed every practical exam with either a distinction or a merit. My employer is thrilled to have me and looks after me pretty well financially. However when I was on the scaffolding today I found my mind drifiting to awful condition of the surrounding trees. There was inward growth everywhere and most of the trees had outgrown there environment. I wanted to be in doing tree work, having fun dragging brash around and learning a trade I’m genuinely interested in, not tied to a trowel on a dodgy scaffold laying brick after brick after brick. I’m just after a few opinions from people who have been in the arb trade for a few years about what I should do. I plan on sticking my appentiship out for the remaining six months and then evaluating me situation. However id like to be gaining experience now around my existing job.

  10. Hi, I am on the hunt for any entry level job in Belfast, I am happy to do brush dragging/labouring to get my foot in the door but my end goal is to become a skilled climber so I am trying to get the experience I need. I am happy enough to start of doing 1 or 2 days a week on a voluntary basis. I have my CS30 and I am aiming to do more tickets but I am reluctant to fork out the money at the minute with no way of putting what I learn to good use. I have done a couple of trial days with a company but didn't hear anything back, I work hard and wasn't told anything negative on the job so I assume it was my lack of experience that has failed me here. I have also emailed all companies local to me but have not heard anything back and trainee jobs/apprenticeships seem to be non existent in Northern Ireland Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Thomas.
  11. Obtained my CS30 & 31 last year and am now seeking long term employment as a trainee or apprentice to further develop my skills and knowledge. I'd be particularly interested in an arboriculture/ tree surgeon type role however am interested in all areas of the industry including woodland management. The key for me is the chance to improve my skills and knowledge. I'm a young, fit 23 year old willing to get stuck in wherever needed. I live near Malton, North Yorkshire and would be willing to travel upto an hour for the right position. If anyone has any positions going or knows anyone who might be looking I'd hugely appreciate any opportunities or recommendations. Thanks Aaron
  12. Hi there I am currently working as a self employed electrician, however am desperate for a career change to the Arb/forestry industry. I have experience on the saw, working with a friend of mine on a few brashing jobs, and have my own saw and PPE, along with my own van. I am based in Innerleithen in the Scottish Borders however will travel for work quite happily. I am looking for either some experience as I work towards gaining my tickets, or the opportunity of an apprenticeship or trainee groundsman position, with the intention of progressing towards a climber. Any and all pointers or help would be massively appreciated. Thank you in advance J. Russell 07588212721 [email protected]

  14. Hi, I'm looking to get some hands on experience with a tree surgeon/arborist near Glasgow, but will travel further afield. I'm 27, fit and reliable with full clean license and car. I will be hopefully getting my basic chainsaw certs (CS30+31) early next month and plan on getting more as I gain experience. Looking for any opportunity to learn. I have used chainsaws in past while volunteering in Sweden and Norway for basic estate maintenance work, processing firewood, harvesting Christmas trees, etc. And even worked with a chainsaw carver. I'd be prepared to work for free until it's been established that I'm worth having around. I work hard and don't mess around so know that in time I'll be an asset to any business. So if you fancy a free pair of hands for a few days work or if you are needing an apprentice/groundsman let me know. I''ll consider any offers. If necessary I'd be prepared to relocate if there was a good opportunity. Cheers, Richard 07933136253
  15. Hi all! I am 24 and desperately looking for an apprenticeship, I am a very keen worker and always look forward to advancing training and skills. If anybody in the northampton area is in need of an apprentice, I am your guy! My aim and dream is to get up in the trees, however I am more than happy to do everything in between for as long as it takes. Currently I am saving to do my CS30/31. I am happy to pay for my own training at the minute (no point in sitting on my arse waiting for a handout). And have no problem acquiring relevant tickets needed for additional work. I am fit and more than willing to work hard and for as many or whatever hours are required. thanks for taking the time to read my pathetic plea! chris.
  16. Hi all, my first post here! I recently decided to explore the world of Arboriculture and after doing a large amount of research and spending a day with a local Arborist, I quickly realised that this is an avenue I want to follow. I'm 23, and at present I have a good understanding of the job, but little experience, no equipment and no qualifications. I am eager to change this as quickly as possible. I work an unrelated retail job, 3 days a week. I'm in a fairly fortunate position, in that I am able to reasonably support myself on this (Although I don't have a disposable income), leaving myself time to work any opportune groundwork/labour jobs that may come my way. Should Arboriculture become a solid job for me, I'd happily leave my current job to make it a living. I'm fairly well read on what qualifications and skills are required to make myself attractive to a prospective employer, but my question is primarily pertinent to the progression one should follow in order to achieve this as quickly and cost effectively as possible. I understand that there are employers who will take on trainees/apprentices and partially/entirely fund their tickets, but they still seem to expect candidates to be qualified in CS30/31 and Climbing/Aerial Rescue. This immediately requires me to drop something in the area of £1500-2500 on PPE, climbing gear and training before I'm at a stage where I am even a viable candidate. That's a lot of hours to make up! Don't get me wrong - I'm not opposed to an initial outlay if it is a sensible and worthwhile one. My question is whether I'd be throwing money up the wall, and if you would do things differently. I'm also aware that I can work as a cheap labourer while I build up my funds and equipment, which I fully intend to do. However I want to make myself as employable as possible, because I know that a brash dragger is only worth so much when there are more qualified groundworkers available. I apologise for rambling, and I'll attempt to summarise. How would you spend your early time and money, in order to make yourself an attractive candidate to a prospective employer? Cheers guys! Lewis.
  17. I'm a young family man (I'm 26) based in Moniaive currently looking for work in and around the Dumfries and Galloway area but can travel further. I have resently got my Forwarder lisence but also have my Cs 30,31,32 and 34 chainsaw tickets. Im also handy with most machines (from brushcutters and strimmers to tractors) though I dot have other tickets. I also hold a driving lisence. I have been working mostly on windblow the past year as well as some estate maintenance ( cleaning up parks, digging out ditches, abit of road work etc.) but Im currently not getting as much work as i would like too feed my increasingly hungry Kids. I'm a easy going guy really, will work long hard hours for reasonable rates. I can also give refrences if required. So if your looking for an apprentice, groundsman, machine driver or labourer I'm your man. Thanks Henry My Mobile is 07860676217
  18. Hello all. I have recently started my level 3 arb course at Easton college and am looking for work experience in the norfolk/suffolk area. First a little about me. I'm a 25yr old mature student and I am a year 1 arb student. I have my own vehicle and car licence, I have come to arb from working in the IRATA system of rope access so have an understanding of ropes and rigging in I am also a qualified first aider with a recently renewed ticket. I'm more than happy to provided my own PPE although I do not have a harness or my CS tickets for climbing yet. As I am only a couple of months into my course my knowledge is steadily growing and I would love to join a team where I can expand my knowledge. I am happy to provide a CV if needed and am prepared to work as hard as anyone else in this industry. Also if this helps I can make a mean pot of tea and have many years experience with a rake and broom tidying up work sites. Any help would be appreciated greatly. Many thanks JC.
