  1. Trouble is a lot of people are struggling short term, and IMO digging themselves into a rut long term. Theyve done well for a couple of years brought equipment and so on. That £200 quid job that they've done for a £100 could have been done by one person (maybe - I haven't seen it) which could pay for the fuel for a week whilst waiting for other jobs -which won't happen to come in. This means that they stay afloat for a while until something major goes bang and they have been effectively borrowing money. I've got a contract finishing soon that is my bread and butter. This is a trap I need to make sure I don't fall into, I either need to get some more decent work in, or go and work for someone else whos got decent work. Not amble along almost making ends meet. R
  2. Have you not got it anymore then? I don't doubt it makes life much easier for a lot of jobs and that you could get a lot of work in for it. If somebody told me that all they did day in day out was sub to other firms with a mewp it wouldn't surprise me at all. It's interesting seeing how other people operate and what works for somebody doesn't work for another. I guess the secret is finding something unique that other people are prepared to pay for, if we could all do that we'd all be rich!! If anybodys got any bright ideas let me know:thumbup:
  3. Would you buy yours again Dean, with a similar breakdown to how you did the chipper breakdown of costs do you find it worthwhile? Appreciate it's not an open and shut questions as some jobs you'll only have been able to do with the mewp etc... R
  4. To right I'm being serious, you'd have to be using it on jobs that needed a mewp that size everyday to make it worthwhile. I just can't see it being profitable. Something like Deans mewp would make far better sense but again for the few jobs where one is needed/more efficient you can get one in with an operator without tying up thousands in capital. I can't realistically see HSE Stopping us climbing in the next 20 years, beyond which point I'll be retired or dead anyway. Rob
  5. Depends on the job doesn't it. I normally follow up most leads but do sometimes feel I'm wasting my time. If your busy then fair does filtering them. Sometimes it goes the other way, I went to do a quote - It was a straightforward fell but then a drag up an alley way etc to get rid of the rubbish. I started explaining this and the fella said - I just want it down I'll sort out getting rid of it. So I said £30 quid and I'll do it now. He agreed, knocked it over £30quid instead of not getting a job and having wasted my time quoting. Some of the best jobs for repeat work/recommendation have been the ones where I wasn't convinced to start with. R
  6. I really can't ever see how that would make money, but then again the person that buys it will already have a fair bit of money, so will obviously know about making money.... R
  7. Rock climbing and tree climbing are 2 completely different systems, as someone else has said you ought to be quoting enough to adequately staff it. If your worried, get someone with cs38 if for half a day, give them some money, if not get the job done go home with all the money in your pocket. R
  8. 2 pairs of trousers, one to wear the other 2 dry. I find if they get wet on a monday they are dry by weds morning just hung up inside.
  9. Each to their own and all that................. I've done some similar fells like that but the worse case scenario would have been having to cut everything up into man moveable sizes. Wouldn't have done it over a live poweline..... I'd have let someone else use that cherry picker parked up in the background:thumbup:
  10. Haven't got a clue, I just drive the things, or actually I don't as I can't drive a minibus above 3.5t due to a silly licence...................

Plus you couldn't fly that in there like you can a harrier.........
  12. You can get a 4.2 tonne transit though so surely it's possible......

I'd be very surprised if you were able to get a permit of the CAA to fly it in the uk, sounds like he's found a loophole to do it in the US. I do like the idea of owning a share in an ex military jet though, be more fun than a cessna!!!
  14. Sorry to derail the thread further, have you checked that vosa have the authority to pull you. I believe that not all police forces have given them the necessary permissions. Worth a check, otherwise start documenting it followed by a complaint. I've had the results of my compaint that basically said they believe they were acting reasonably and within the law but would review procedures and driver training. Means next time they brake sharply in front of me and I can't avoid an accident I'll be asking for this review of driver training to be shown. R
  15. I changed the weight on a van once, I just sent off the V5 and it came back with the updated weight on it no questions, it was about 10 years ago though so things may have changed by now. When I got stopped overweight I was let off with a warning because it was less than 10percent. I am more conscious of it now though. I don't see any problem with the law it's the same for everybody, break it and suffer the consequences. What I do have a problem with is the way it is enforced differently, it needs to be enforced equally all over the uk. It's not fair that somepeople are let off and others are given a £1000 fine. Maybe the consequences need to be more severe. How many people would drive overweight if it was an automatic ban?? At the end of the day the rules are there for a reason, yep I've broken them and been lucky but if it had of gone wrong how would I have felt? R
  16. I hate these kind of jobs, they seem to have a habbit of being the most complicated or go wrong leaving you with mud on your face. Normally you'd just give a high quote but in this situation you can't:sneaky2: As the saying goes, do someone a favour, do yourself a misfavour!!
  17. We used to get all the tree work on our mowing maintenance contracts. A competitor of mine went in a lot cheaper than me to make the money on the tree side. Unfortunately the next year the tree work was subbed out as a hole and he was tied into a 3 year contract at a very low price. It worked for a year for him, but bit him in the end, can be worth doing but it's a gamble!!
  18. They rang me yesterday, needless to say they got precisely nowhere!!

  22. Yer but when you get to catch them in the act, the feeling that you get cannot be beaten!!! Other than that insurance is the next best thing! R
  23. Fair does, I assumed the 25 was the horsepower, 10hp more is 50percent more which is a lot! I had assumed that the stone was skidded/jumped into place rather than lifted in one, looks a good job though. As for more powerful, we'll always want that. I don't fully utilise the kit I own at the moment but doesn't stop me thinking about what will be next!!!
  24. The woman at the clinic told me I haven't got it either:001_tt2: I agree they are a tool, and wouldn't need to be lolered, I just wonder where the definition comes into play. It's an interesting question:thumbup:
