  1. The claimed output is 10m3 per day. That could weigh 6-12tonne dep on wood type & % moisture. I had allowed the conversion of 3-7" trees times the amount per hour as a total m3 for the day. As the wood will get more than 1m3 per tonne (normally) allowing 10 tonne as a cost should put me on the safe side of things. The 18 tonne load would not have to be finished over the two days to make it pay & can be finished by chainsaw & hydraulic splitter. As he is local to me delivery would be negligible & no digs needed.
  2. What? Diesel? Or red specifically?
  3. Some fag packet calcs put that at about 10m3 of solid wood per day. That I estimate would make about 15m3 of loose tipped logs. So the costs stack up ok at that as long as you are selling the logs at a good price. Per Day Processor hire £200 Wood @40/tonne £400 (bought in inc del to our remote site) 1 day your own labour £100 Total £600 As long as you are selling at over £40/m3 you are making some money. £50 - £150 £60 - £300 £70 - £450 £80 - £600 £90 - £750 £100 - £900 Hows your calendar fixed for availability, will need to order the wood first. (anyone got some locally?) Get it done soon & it will be good for next winter.
  4. Should be interlocked so you can only use crawler gears with the back up.
  5. How much wood would you be able to do per day? Justme
  6. Having just bought one from a dealer I would like to saw what tosh that is. He did not ask if I knew what I was doing or show me how to use anything. It was here's the saw (after it was test run & set up but not in front of me) what else do you need & pay the money.
  7. I thought the point of using chestnut was that untreated it last MUCH longer than any other wood when treated.
  8. You have to take them off.
  9. Get a lorry jack. Lots of tyre fitters are getting rid of the manual ones & have air operated hydraulic ones now.
  10. Does the log stay suspended on the winch wire when you are driving along?
  11. Canada is much cheaper too.
  12. Yes just a small scale plot within an existing woodland. Plan is to coppice the trees once they are established as this works well with the truffles. The problem with successes is that it takes so long to start producing & even longer to produce lots. Its still in its infancy. Plus any one that was doing ok would keep it quiet.
  13. Via another forum I know one of the big players in the truffle tree game. We wanted to inoculate some trees. But on his advice we will be planting trees that are already done & tested as being infected. Inoculation of existing trees is very hit & miss. Not many truffle get sold for £20k especially ones that grow in the UK. His online shop (LINKY) has trees at about £18 each but if you are buying lots then they are nearer £8 each & if you are doing an Hectares worth then grants will cover lots of the cost leaving you about £2k or less to pay (for the trees, still need other bits).
  14. Just found a chart that shows the cost per kwh for various woods at dif moisture % & purchase costs. linky to article
  15. Two tall trees, a birch and a beech, are growing in the woods. A small tree begins to grow between them, and the beech says to the birch, 'Is that a son of a beech or a son of a birch?' The birch says he cannot tell. Just then a woodpecker lands on the sapling. The birch says, 'Woodpecker, you are a tree expert. Can you tell if that is a son of a beech, or a son of a birch?' The woodpecker takes a taste of the small tree. He replies, 'It is neither a son of a beech nor a son of a birch. It is, however, the best piece of ash I have ever put my pecker in.'
  16. Cheap, till you get the vets bill lol.
  17. I expect more of it. Lots more. Its low, Very low in this case when is obvious the person making the ap is going to do the work, but be honest if it was you that was going to the wall, was loosing your house, could not feed, clothe your kids ect would you not be proactive in trying to find work? For builders its a fairly standard way of gaining work. Read papers & contact everyone that gains planning permission. But in that game most people doing the PP ap wont be doing the building work as well.
  18. I have been using my new saw today for the first time. It has the new caps. If you over fill the oil even slightly its a pain to get it to close. I had to tip some out in the end. The petrol one seems fine.
  19. Dirt trapped in the clutch springs or weak springs letting the weights catch. Or an out of round clutch housing, or poss loose bearings on the housing. But weak or broken springs is where my money would be.
  20. This no mail order stuff is odd. You can buy a car with no licence (so no training) & that is far far more dangerous than any saw to far more people & worse for those not in control of it than those that are. At least with a saw it is most likely just you that gets hurt. I guess time will tell if they have it right or not. I think its more about protecting margins as they can squeeze out the mail order box shifters who buy & import via the "grey" market. I spoke to the local ish dealer & they wanted £400 inc vat for a MS250 with 16" bar. Then I found a dealer a bit further away that would do me one for £350 inc with a bigger 18" bar (last one at that price as his new stock was at the increased price). So I went with them in the end. They also got about £70 worth of sales for other bits too.
  21. Dont they know there is a recession on? Prices should be going down not up.
  22. Ah Tony now thats a better deal. Main use is cutting wood lol. Its a one saw does it all. So felling thinnings to 2 or 3 foot trees. Then limbing up & ringing up. I'm not doing it all day every day but when I am using it it will prob work all day for a week or so then get used occasionally till the next session. In a year it will prob see about 3 weeks work.
  23. I only quoted the MS250 to show the price difference. I have not chose a saw yet. Could do with some advice.
  24. Yeh thats a bit far plus that sounds dear as Jonsey does em for £350-£357-£364 plus vat dep on bar size) I could get one from our local agri suppliers but they not have much range & normally their prices make you cry. Might be worth a look as I need to go in tomorrow any way. Just spotted that Husky also seem to be stopping mail order sales too according to this advert HERE
  25. It might come to that. Still need to choose which saw first.
