    Todays Job

Prob less than 30% burnt in sections spaced out. Those pics are a small section of the 56 acres. Its not been done for about 10 years (previous owners for the most part & weather conditions for the last few years) so is well over due. Its an accepted standard management method.
  2. Your a bit out of date. So yes its still slightly worse than red (before it was much worse) but very soon will be the same.

    Todays Job

Todays job was not arb but it was outside all day in the fresh air (cough cough). I was helping a farmer friend to burn the heather & gorse on a 56 acre plot next to a Tillhill plot. The other edges were "safe" but we had to watch for it getting out of hand on the forest side. In the end it burnt slowly on that edge & then move away up the hill. It got quite cold & windy around lunch time but picked up after.
  6. The names Richard. We used to be the big white place on the main road but sold it year & a half ago. We are on the back road that runs from Mynedd Nefyn to Pentre Uchaf & the junction to Pistyll near Bo's yard. Like I said we will only be selling from the gate & what we dont sell we will use ourselves. I understand you would not want to give out your prices, It was silly of me to ask. I will also understand if you dont want to do this as its so close to home & on your patch. Your welcome to pop in if your in the area.
  7. I am a little nobody lol. (if you know Bo I am very close to his yard) Will speak to Ralph tomorrow. Wont be approaching any customers. Will all be sold via a sign on the gate. Plus dont want to do it cheap any way. What do you charge for wood round here retail (dont want to under cut you either) for 1/2m3 & 1m3 loads Wont need labourer as both me & my son would be here & I work my arse off. Level area is no probs just laid a track. As you know Ralphs lorry how long would it take to do a full load? Does it run on red? If so we have a bulk tank here so you could bring it full & leave with it full (or empty / empty lol).
  8. I just dont get that. They seem to have managed to get a few tractors in there with no problems & I bet they could have pulled a trailer each.
  9. Wyn I am just up the road from you near Mynedd Nefyn. Now I know it will take up to 12" (is the 8 foot the max length? I have a digger with a grab if weights the issue) I can speak to the local guy to see what he has got available for a sensible cost. I will call once I have spoke to Ralph about the logs.
  10. The claimed output is 10m3 per day. That could weigh 6-12tonne dep on wood type & % moisture. I had allowed the conversion of 3-7" trees times the amount per hour as a total m3 for the day. As the wood will get more than 1m3 per tonne (normally) allowing 10 tonne as a cost should put me on the safe side of things. The 18 tonne load would not have to be finished over the two days to make it pay & can be finished by chainsaw & hydraulic splitter. As he is local to me delivery would be negligible & no digs needed.
  11. What? Diesel? Or red specifically?
  12. Some fag packet calcs put that at about 10m3 of solid wood per day. That I estimate would make about 15m3 of loose tipped logs. So the costs stack up ok at that as long as you are selling the logs at a good price. Per Day Processor hire £200 Wood @40/tonne £400 (bought in inc del to our remote site) 1 day your own labour £100 Total £600 As long as you are selling at over £40/m3 you are making some money. £50 - £150 £60 - £300 £70 - £450 £80 - £600 £90 - £750 £100 - £900 Hows your calendar fixed for availability, will need to order the wood first. (anyone got some locally?) Get it done soon & it will be good for next winter.
  13. Should be interlocked so you can only use crawler gears with the back up.
  14. How much wood would you be able to do per day? Justme
  15. Having just bought one from a dealer I would like to saw what tosh that is. He did not ask if I knew what I was doing or show me how to use anything. It was here's the saw (after it was test run & set up but not in front of me) what else do you need & pay the money.
  16. I thought the point of using chestnut was that untreated it last MUCH longer than any other wood when treated.
  17. You have to take them off.
  18. Get a lorry jack. Lots of tyre fitters are getting rid of the manual ones & have air operated hydraulic ones now.
  19. Does the log stay suspended on the winch wire when you are driving along?
  20. Canada is much cheaper too.
  21. Yes just a small scale plot within an existing woodland. Plan is to coppice the trees once they are established as this works well with the truffles. The problem with successes is that it takes so long to start producing & even longer to produce lots. Its still in its infancy. Plus any one that was doing ok would keep it quiet.
  22. Via another forum I know one of the big players in the truffle tree game. We wanted to inoculate some trees. But on his advice we will be planting trees that are already done & tested as being infected. Inoculation of existing trees is very hit & miss. Not many truffle get sold for £20k especially ones that grow in the UK. His online shop (LINKY) has trees at about £18 each but if you are buying lots then they are nearer £8 each & if you are doing an Hectares worth then grants will cover lots of the cost leaving you about £2k or less to pay (for the trees, still need other bits).
  23. Just found a chart that shows the cost per kwh for various woods at dif moisture % & purchase costs. linky to article
  24. Two tall trees, a birch and a beech, are growing in the woods. A small tree begins to grow between them, and the beech says to the birch, 'Is that a son of a beech or a son of a birch?' The birch says he cannot tell. Just then a woodpecker lands on the sapling. The birch says, 'Woodpecker, you are a tree expert. Can you tell if that is a son of a beech, or a son of a birch?' The woodpecker takes a taste of the small tree. He replies, 'It is neither a son of a beech nor a son of a birch. It is, however, the best piece of ash I have ever put my pecker in.'
  25. Cheap, till you get the vets bill lol.
