i thought the spikes a lot of people really rated where called" distel geckos" ?? when looking on honey bros there where distel spikes but they wernt called geckos, but there were notch geckos. i am i losing it or has something changed!?? well the prices have , there are spikes on there for 900 euro plus another 85 euro for a gaff guard!! thanks carl

could it be another part of your climbing thats hurting your wrists, how are you climbing the rest of the tree? i find srt can be hard on my elbows, i put it down to asscending by reaching up and holding myself on the rope and using the foot accsender ( sit stand method without the sit if that makes sense!)

are you buying new? can you not use a demo model to help make up your own mind. id echo what josh said about retractable tracks, i wouldnt consider one without that ( for the work we do)

we thought about buying a piece of cheap land and whacking up a cabin under the planning radar, but then we thought about the main reasons why we wanted our own home and one of them was security and stability with kids of school going age. so for us the no planning route didnt really provide that as your always going to be looking over your shoulder etc and hoping not to upset the wrong person and get a visit from the planners, i know it works for some. we then looked into building with planning and that seemed to be tricky and a costly and lengthy process in ireland.

i have used a lidl saw once, was ok, bit plasticky but i ithink when you take it to be repaired they may not be able to get the parts for it, plus they often put too bigger bar on their saws so by the time you have bought a shorter bar and better chain you would be better of getting one of the small stihl or husky saws people have mentioned. i think going second hand is ok if you know about saws and engines but if you dont, go new at least you have a bit of warranty for piece of mind.

has anyone done or know of any studies into the weakening of rigging ropes over time and use? just wondering as 5yrs life is the general loler rule, so how much weaker are the ropes at this time? we tend to end up down grading rigging ropes to pull ropes and probably put more strain on them. then short bits for pulling logs vehicles etc in which a lot of strain ends up on them. so in doing the above iam happy enough with the ropes safety margins, just wondered if there was data about. thanks carl

so if someone works longer than you its BS or else they weren't really working properly!! oh and in 25yrs you have never met a better worker than yourself??!!! kinda setting the bar high aren't you ?

if you have a truck and chipper and can use a saw how about start doing private tree jobs your self and just hire in a climber for the jobs that need it, it could be a better plan in the long run.

how can you normally finish by half two? do you not do bigger jobs or just mob it with tons of workers? sounds great though!

cool, good info, iam not too far out then with 1.6m rafter spacing, could always move them closer since i have only got two up, thanks carl

update ! now thinking of 6x2 rafters at 1.6 m apart with 3x2 on end running length ways as purlins ( ontop of the rafters) there will be three per side at just over 1m spacings, any thoughts ? thanks

cool thanks for the replies, i think i will raise the pitch a bit as i havent really started cutting the timbers yet. ive got 6x2 so iam still going to use them for the trusses and i recon i will space them at 1.6m intervals then infill with 4x2 purlins top and bottom and one in the middle, i hope that will be butch enough!! the original roof had about a quarter of that timber but despite being rotten and old the closeness and strength of the grain was incredible, maybe scots pine or something certainly not what one gets at the builders supplies today. thanks again for the replies they have really helped. carl

i have lowered the pitch angle a bit mainly just so theres not so much stone work to do on the gables, but it does look a bit shallow??!! we dont get much snow normally but it is a seriously windy spot in the winter. is there a typical pitch for this type of roof? not really done any roofing and stuff online seemed to mainly related to slate or epic farm buildings. thanks

hi iam trying to reroof an old stone shed with corrugated tin, i have leveled off the walls with a sort of concrete ring beam with a 2x4 wall plate bolted on. iam going to use 6x2 to make "a" frames. the span is 3.8m (12 ft) so iam a bit unsure how far apart to put the "A"s? i was going to put 3x4 purlins on top of the "A" but as i have raise the roof up a bit already iam faced with a fair bit of stone work to biuld the walls up, iam crap at stone work so iam now wondering if i could use lighter 2x4 purlins set inbetween the "A"s maybe on hangers, i will put in 3 per side along the length of the roof. i havent actually finished the "A" and the bit of green 4x2 was just to aid the set up. any input appreciated thanks carl

iam looking to get a new harness, i am using the tree motion at the moment and like it, so a couple of questions, is the new evo one any better? is it just the second bridge thing thats different? also i thought i heard someone moaning about the buckles slackening of during climbing? the old one definitely didnt do this which was a plus point. can the old style one be purchased anywhere as id say i would be happy with that. and lastly anyone like the treemotion and then try something better??! thanks carl

not sure quiet what you mean about the ladder??, id only put in a cambium saver once at the top of the tree. when i mentioned throwline set up in my post i meant a throwline and cube etc not set up a cambium saver with a throwline. never been a fan of just a sling and krab as top anchor as not so keen on the way the krab can twist against the stem etc,

some sort of cambium saver, and a throwline set up would be fairly essential imo
