    sawpod

well ive used mine for a while, whilst its not perfect its a definate improvement over having it on my harness, so twenty quid on something that makes the job easier is a good spend imo
  4. no but at work we had both types and the fold down hopper was far nicer to use though. i cant remeber the fixed one but the fold down hopper just had hanging brackets and 2 bolts holding it on , and a kinda bent rod to control the feed roller hydraulics. we often took our hopper off to gain accsess in tight spots. is the hydraulic block in the same spot on both ? i have a feeling it is. we no longer have the fixed hopper model but we have the fold down model still at work if you want me to check anything ( iam assuming this is a tracked machine?) i know why your thinking about doing it , that hopper is so low, great for sycamore coppice , crap for everything else, i used to ramp it up at the front on a couple of logs to try and save my back. carl
  5. i have been climbing on a bulldog for a few years now, i really like it, i doesnt require tweaking or adjusting all the time. it works in the wet ok. i have been using it with non ce cougar blue which was fine although the rope did flatten out a bit, i am now using the xstatic rope which seems better. i like the way you can use the device drt too, althouh its not great like this its fine if you need to climb your way up drt then switch to srt of to descend drt at the end of the climb. i havent used any other srt devices so sorry i cant compare, but the bulldog is well made and does the job imo. you could do a shout on here if anyone local has one you can have a quick blast on ?? carl
  6. have you actually had a tree surgeon come and give you a price?
  7. i thought all you business owners hated spending time pricing and doing quotes?? and here you are in your free time arguing the toss over a job your never ever going to do !!!!
  8. well i got a new rope, i went for the xstatic, ive only used it a bit but it seems nice and definantly runs through the bulldog better going up and down. it does seem a bit slippier in the hand compared to the cougar blue. the colour is a bit weird!! half expected it to come with some 3d glasses. i do miss my eye splice so iam considering getting a shorter length of the fly rope with an eye in for drt. thanks for the help choosing, carl
  9. for small stuff id say a spear cut is hard to beat, admititly not so much control but works well .
  10. saw a pair of choughs at work today, quiet tame too.
  11. could you line up a few different makes and models, find your nearest dealers and try and arrange a demo of each one. a good way to get to know your dealer and what you think of them and then you get to see what you think of the machine rather than someone elses view. particulaly as most companies as changing engines and spec around a lot at the moment to be stage 5 compliant. we have found jensens to be well made and reliable. carl
  12. the little oval dmm xsre krabs are good for this i also use them to attatch my foot loop to the knee asscender. i found the cheapy keyring type ones were the right size but the gate action on them was poor and they didnt last.
  13. the 261,s are good saws but i think there was a batch with a fault with the needle bearing, personally i dont buy the lack of maintence bit as there are saws at work that are ancient and havent been greased and still work fine, were as the 261 we had seemed to need grease and a new bearing after each fill! to the op id get a husky 550, great little saw imo
  14. maybe not so much the concept of music, but the methods used to produce music are inventions, guitar piano etc. id give up a lot before i gave up listening to music (that i like that is!)
  15. i have tried that but often have to go back up to finish the tree anyway so suits me to swap back to drt to descend, dont really feel it works against me, but i can be a bit slow to try new stuff.
  16. i nearly always just tie my mainline anchor in a running bowline to the top of the tree then when iam done go back up and undo and come down on double rope, not very fancy but simple and doesnt get stuck on the retrieval.
  17. this is for srt, the rope isnt running through it like a cambium saver in drt, i think i saw the vid the op is talking about, it did look good, but i have never used it, my srt set up is pretty simple.
  18. the battery ones are way nicer to use than the petrol version
  19. cool thanks for replies
  20. anyone else try it??
  21. i think the ones i made were about 70cm, they work fine side branches, id say really long ones would tangle a lot whilst climbing around. i guess see which sizes work for you.
  22. just had a look at the x static and realised it dosent have a splice neither does the Courant Squir V2, i like the sound of these ropes but i really do like my splice as i normally descend double rope, plus drt climbing of small trees, so any other ropes to look at or should i consider getting two ropes one spliced for drt and a non spliced for srt. i know a lot of this is down to personal preference but always good to have other peoples input. thanks carl
  23. we have just noticed a small amount of play in the front bearing ( nearest the hopper) when you grab the flywheel at 9 and 3 oclock one can feel a small amount of play. obviously this will have to be fixed, my question is can it be used like this or is there a danger of it causing more damage? its a jensen 530 chipper. any thoughts? thanks carl
