  1. You say "not cutting uniformly" , on your machine do you have to do every other depth gauge and then turn the chain the same as sharpening the cutters ? . Not that hard really to hand file a single depth gauge down just far enough measured with the filing gauge and then set the grinding wheel to just kiss the surface πŸ˜‰
  2. Worth noting that duty rebated means it is a reduced rate taxation, those of us who have up to now been paying road fuel duty on non mobile machines are now going to have to pay full duty due to the misuse of the mobile users 😑 And to rub salt into the wounds the offenders get to keep their economy fuel β›½
  3. Our local supplier has the pump set to cut out at 99 litres to check if you have a registration card in their files. It'll be interesting to see how it develops as they are in an area with a lot of off grid dwellers and so have good reason to keep supplying duty rebated πŸ™‚
  4. Do we actually know how the off road use of duty rebated fuels is going to be regulated, at the moment we have only concerned ourselves with the acceptable use of such fuels on road. As it stands anybody can purchase at the pump duty rebated fuels with no questions asked or any record being kept below 100 litres and use it for anything off road other than inland boating. I rather fear that the extra level of confusion caused by the upcoming changes is aimed at finding a good reason to totally withdraw the good old red diesel β›½
  5. Comes under forestry so still usable 😁
  6. Bath has form for putting their signs in obscure places, at one time a single bus lane was a fairly major revenue source for them 😠
  7. Anyone knows what happens if the road you were going to use is shut and the temporary diversion goes into a zone ? πŸ€”
  8. Assessing brain damage in a scaffolder is also tricky 🀭
  9. London plane that is taller than a house and covers part of the garden......... only a baby, got loads to grow yet, and considered to be safe to retain in town πŸ˜‰
  10. I would say that the control systems are definitely the weak part of complex integrated energy installations. So far we are at the point that all the parts can communicate with each other but they don't know what they should be doing. It still seems to have to be told what to do by an interested human who also happens to be organised. I'd imagine that in time self-learning control systems will get good enough to guess when the likely power demands and inputs are in the day. As it is an unfortunately large proportion of owners of wood burning stoves seem incapable or disinterested in learning to use them efficiently, so I see little chance for anything more complex πŸ˜’ Most of the time our energy distribution networks have become spectacularly good so people are inclined to go into renewables with a very high expectation πŸ˜‰
  11. Don't know how recent your streetview image is, in my area the fibre optic contractors have been through since then and roadside trees have no roots above 400 mm πŸ€”
  12. I've had one that went in, got all hot and puffy before becoming a lump that broke back out in a different place a year later. In a previous life it wasn't at all surprising to find a thorn rolling around inside a hedge cutting tractors rear tyre having been fired straight through the sidewall 😲
  13. Room for two ? πŸ™‚ , 24" lengths too πŸ€”
  14. Many of the postmasters had to dip into their savings to make the books balance, who got to snaffle those funds ? It makes my mind boggle that this travesty could ever have happened 😑
  15. Good read (as always) Alec. Interested in your views on Phase change materials πŸ˜‰πŸ™‚
  16. It would be fascinating to know how much lower the air pressure is in your house than atmospheric pressure outside πŸ˜‰
  17. I remember seeing the Victron combi with power assist in a canal boat magazine about 20 years ago ....... impressive but eye wateringly expensive (my slightly wonky memory says 3.5 k) Last year I finally bought one and added a Cerbo GX plus GX touch for half the price the basic jobby was back then. The technology has improved as the cost has plummeted. Victron with their attitude to sharing information and making software open source makes them an easy choice for self installers. Batteries are the expensive bit now if you need a good round trip efficency and want to run a generator for only short periods. I'd be wary about running a three phase generator set up as it does scream non-domestic and may not be permitted to run on red.
  18. So once we are flushing tanks and changing filters after using duty rebated will the delivery tankers carry on having just the one meter and delivery hose ? πŸ€”
  19. Cor !! You wouldn't even mind mooring next the the vacuum cleaner and hairdryer salesman on his Nahlin if you were the owner of her 😁 Hope you get more moments of light than dark in the near future Eggs πŸ™‚
  20. Got something near identical from safety lifting gear (used to have a stand at the arb show) , really good value and very reliable πŸ™‚
  21. Didn't the forestry commission reckon on a thousand operating hours before an operator became efficient enough to pay their way ?πŸ˜‰
  22. 5 ah batteries in mine too and also surprised what it'll do. Use it for the odd bit of firewood cutting as well and think it feels safer than using one of the proper forestry saws on small bits, so can't see any objections to using one on hedges πŸ˜‰ Talking about the top handle 36v
  23. Looks like Gloucestershire are still on the need to know principal πŸ˜” Might be something to do with the other half working from home ... possibly 🀭
  24. I'm still liking my twin battery top handle Makita after two years of use, nice up a tree and when I'm not watching myself it's done a fair bit of firewood πŸ™‚
  25. Two harnesses, three ropes. Stands to reason it's got to be safer than one harness. + the self inflating buoyancy aid .... the rescue knife for cutting the lanyard that is trying to drown us we already have on our work positioning harness ..... Somewhere under all the layers
