  1. Would a descent subie climber not be a better option?

  3. Its on the "Todays job thread" I think.
  4. Considering the tree had been dismantled, leaving a mere nub of a trunk, I really don't think the toes were of any concern. Edit, although given the obvious late hour and the fact they were working in the dark, I would not have been messing about make those unnecessary cuts.
  5. Pic's????
  6. Do you produce sawn timber?
  7. I know very little about drying sawn timber, but my understanding was it needed to be pretty slow and gentle, hence the reason dehumidifiers are often used. Would a 100KW boiler be a little on the large side. Firewood is different, faster the better, splitting and twisting matters not.
  8. The whole job, but you will get the vat on the materials back:thumbup1:
  9. I'm pretty sure your incorrect Stevie, this is taken from an accountancy site So you need to calculate the gross market value including VAT of: Stock on hand which you claimed input VAT on. Assets on hand – such as machinery or vehicles – which you claimed input VAT on. Land and property in use by the business which you claimed VAT on. The good news is that if the total VAT element of these assets is below £1,000 you won’t have to pay anything. This means that if you are considering de-registering and the tax element is just above £1,000 you should consider running down your stocks to get the tax due under £1,000. If you do this, be prepared to defend your market value calculation if you get an enquiry!
  10. If you deregister I thought you have to repay the vat on any assets still on your books?
  11. You deduct the vat you are reclaiming from the vat you owe and pay the balance or claim whats due if it greater than whats owed. They are a bit tighter on claiming vat on purchases from before registration, they now take depreciation into account, rather than just refunding you in full, or so I heard.
  12. Some times the client likes you, some times they don't. I try to alway meet the client on site, I hate quoting over the phone or in writing.
  13. The problem is when it comes to the vat man and the tax man you are guilty until you prove your own innocence, which without good records is impossible. Far better to simply play the game by the rules they set, rather being a smart ass and getting burned.
  14. I guess you hit the £250K turnover, good for you
  15. Nice here, cold, but sunny. Went out for a walk with my favourite ladies (two daughters and my lass) earlier, was great!!!
  16. Good post, I'm a new comer compared to you (started in 94) but I totally get what your saying. Chippers were still rare back then, lots of burning and habitat piles. As you say so many lads working for buttons:thumbdown: Ah well I'd rather stay home than match their prices.
  17. There are plenty of good people out there. On Thursday night I was going to visit my mother in hospital, as we were leaving I noticed the dog was missing, we went looking for him to no avail. Decided we needed to go and would resume the hunt on our return. Heading down the M65 my phone rings, its the vets, a lady has picked him up in the village and taken him to the vets for them to read the chip, hence them calling me. I ask if its possible for me to pay the vets to take him home (my son is in) They say the lady says she was willing to return him, so they hand the phone over to her, lovely lady arrangements are made. I ring my son and tell him the lady is coming with the dog and tell him to give her £20 and a huge thank you. Lady would not accept the money and we exchanged a few very nice text messages

    logs

Falling gas and oil prices do not help demand and that it unlikely to change with the advent of cracking shale gas. With the Ash disease now out of control I can see every farmers son with a chainsaw becoming a wood merchant for a bit of beer money. In my local parish mag this time there were 7 people adverting logs and another 3 selling stoves who also sell logs.So short term then there will be a demand for decent splitters but I can't see many people making a sensible return on logs. A Good point, we should have become machine dealers, not started producing logs. Its like the Klondike gold rush, a few lucky people made a fortune, most went home broke, but the guys selling picks, shovels, tents, etc all made a tidy living.
  19. Don't think I'll ever be able to bring myself to sell mine.
  20. Good job you have book keep mate I'm on the flat rate scheme, it works for me. I like the fact that it would be very difficult to make an error and find you have claimed incorrectly and get a huge bill.
  21. In reality how many "rescue climbers" could actually do the task if needed? Plan for your own rescue is my advice, sure a second climber is good as well, but getting yourself down will always be faster if you can.
  22. The best boots for mud are someone else's, with their feet in them, I hate mud!!!! I do very few jobs for developers because I HATE mud.
  23. I would have no concerns about providing a school with "fresh" chip, straight from a job, older chip thats had chance to compost is where the danger lies, IMO.
  24. I got my father-in-law a pen and pencil set from Ian for xmas, he is delighted with them, they are all he uses these days.
  25. I well never understand people who think like this Tax is a % of your profit, so if your Ltd and you clear £50k you pay 20% Tax or £10k, so you keep £40K, but YOU don't want the £40k because of the £10k tax
