  1. Nice here, cold, but sunny. Went out for a walk with my favourite ladies (two daughters and my lass) earlier, was great!!!
  2. Good post, I'm a new comer compared to you (started in 94) but I totally get what your saying. Chippers were still rare back then, lots of burning and habitat piles. As you say so many lads working for buttons:thumbdown: Ah well I'd rather stay home than match their prices.
  3. There are plenty of good people out there. On Thursday night I was going to visit my mother in hospital, as we were leaving I noticed the dog was missing, we went looking for him to no avail. Decided we needed to go and would resume the hunt on our return. Heading down the M65 my phone rings, its the vets, a lady has picked him up in the village and taken him to the vets for them to read the chip, hence them calling me. I ask if its possible for me to pay the vets to take him home (my son is in) They say the lady says she was willing to return him, so they hand the phone over to her, lovely lady arrangements are made. I ring my son and tell him the lady is coming with the dog and tell him to give her £20 and a huge thank you. Lady would not accept the money and we exchanged a few very nice text messages

Falling gas and oil prices do not help demand and that it unlikely to change with the advent of cracking shale gas. With the Ash disease now out of control I can see every farmers son with a chainsaw becoming a wood merchant for a bit of beer money. In my local parish mag this time there were 7 people adverting logs and another 3 selling stoves who also sell logs.So short term then there will be a demand for decent splitters but I can't see many people making a sensible return on logs. A Good point, we should have become machine dealers, not started producing logs. Its like the Klondike gold rush, a few lucky people made a fortune, most went home broke, but the guys selling picks, shovels, tents, etc all made a tidy living.
  5. Don't think I'll ever be able to bring myself to sell mine.
  6. Good job you have book keep mate I'm on the flat rate scheme, it works for me. I like the fact that it would be very difficult to make an error and find you have claimed incorrectly and get a huge bill.
  7. In reality how many "rescue climbers" could actually do the task if needed? Plan for your own rescue is my advice, sure a second climber is good as well, but getting yourself down will always be faster if you can.
  8. The best boots for mud are someone else's, with their feet in them, I hate mud!!!! I do very few jobs for developers because I HATE mud.
  9. I would have no concerns about providing a school with "fresh" chip, straight from a job, older chip thats had chance to compost is where the danger lies, IMO.
  10. I got my father-in-law a pen and pencil set from Ian for xmas, he is delighted with them, they are all he uses these days.
  11. I well never understand people who think like this Tax is a % of your profit, so if your Ltd and you clear £50k you pay 20% Tax or £10k, so you keep £40K, but YOU don't want the £40k because of the £10k tax
  12. I made the mistake of think the topic could be discussed sensibly, how foolish of me
  13. I started a list, but gave up because I knew I would miss some, so deleted it. We all know the great posters, they are at the top of their game, but are still happy to share, they give tips, techniques, post pic's offer advice etc. Its great when you log on and see a new post from one of these, you know your going to get real solid information, long may they continue to contribute, they really are what AT is all about for me.
  14. :confused1:What?? I was referring to your "who's running on the 30%" post. Obviously we don't all quote the same work, but there will be some overlap, so none of us are working from the same 100%.
  15. With you yes, but your not likely to know how much you lost the quote by (if it was on price), plus if you spend an extra half day quoting in order to get enough work, you may actually be no better off. Its a difficult balance, IMO, you spend more on advertising and more time quoting, to get enough work, but winning more of the available work may mean you can reduce advertising and time quoting, cutting costs and increasing profit. Trying not to win work on price is best, if you can, IMO.
  16. Looks painfully slow for a poor result. Round file and plenty of practice is best IMO. I'm out.
  17. Beautiful today!!! Blue skys!!!! Could not work due to family commitments, typical!!!! Looks like tomorrow and friday are OK, so should finally get a little work done!!

Not just the weather, theres the price of oil too.
  19. Why the same money? I like to win my work based on me selling our service. By this I mean, they ask me to quote, I go and look, talk the job through with them, give them a price and they say yes without getting more quotes. If they say they are getting more quotes more often than not I don't hear from them again, some people round here work for peanuts.
