  1. apparently there is some kind of mulcher on Quest tonight at 9.
  2. This is mine, only a bog standard 2.0 estate. It now has a towbar fitted, its bloody thirsty. I also have a landrover which is cheaper to run......
  3. then he goes on to say put em back in the same holes......
  4. we could do with footpath closed signs in a number of different languages, cos the locals obviously cant read the ones we use.
  5. I enjoyed this one..... Amazon.co.uk: the wollemi pine: Books
  6. I did 5 seasons of planting, mainly whips on new bypass projects, several hundred a day, but also some really big stuff where they could only fit a couple in an artic trailer. The whips were usually quite soul destrying, but when i see the growth in the last 6 or 7 years on some of the sites the bad bits fade from memory. I prefered the bigger stuff, including some in central coventry near a new Ikea that was being built, and a project at a renovated athletics stadium in Uxbridge. also planted 15000 aquatic plants in a pond on that one. that wasnt great in waders over a cold winter.

  8. we have a few here in lincoln, mainly street trees, but we have felled at least half a dozen in the last couple of years, with another couple due to come down fairly soon.
  9. the only way i could see this working, without actually naming anyone, would be to have a list of dummy names and imaginary "crimes" as if i was threatened with publication on such a site, i would check out the site myself to see what sort of threat it was posing.
  10. I had a lod of WRC decking off cuts from a project and it was the best kindling i ever used. was devastated when it ran out.
  11. depending on the age of the child, you may want to look at full body harnesses. youngsters dont have the hip developement to hold them in sit harnesses should they turn upside down. there are a few rock climbing ones available and they are not too expensive.
  12. 103 kg, but i'm a short arse.... i go out on the branches and the lads snip the ends off from the ground with secateurs.
  13. here is mine, its ok, but doesnt tow well.
  14. did anyone else notice the leaves on the trees in the background grow, drop and grow again during that sequence..... its a slow way to get logs.
  15. our stumps are left until there are enough for a full days grinding. we leave them at around a metre high so they can be seen easily by drivers and pedestrians, avoiding a trip hazzard. Replacements are usually planted in typical planting season (Nov / March) by the lads that drive mowers in grass cutting season. 25/30% seems a high failure rate, but i would expect up to 15% loss on bare root planting.
  16. i reckon you could hide one away in your yard without her finding out about it Dean.

    Fridays!

Friday was a strange one for me too. I have been doing a lot of work in council owned woodlands locally. As it is school holidays the local kids are always watching the machinery in operation, anyway, yesterday, 3 of them came running up to where we were having a drink and said "Theres a man on the floor up there, we think he might have had a fit" 2 of us had a run down the track to where they pointed while the other lad stayted to keep an eye on the gear. When we got on the scene, sure enough there was a guy laid on the floor, but it was more than a fit. he had quite severe lacerations to neck and wrist, there was a kitchen knife on the floor a few feet away, and you could hear the air sucking through the hole in his neck. We spent the next hour dealing with ambucopter, paramedics, police and doing crowd control while the professionals got on with their jobs. Not the nice easy early finish we wanted on a Friday.
  19. Never done anything on this scale, but i would think you'd need some bloody deep foundations or pilings to support a 50m walkway. Once you get the weight of a couple of people 25m from the support there will be some pretty big forces unleashed. The tension you'd need to keep the centre well above ground/swamp level would be immense. I must add, my only experience is of small scale wooden projects with the scouts.
  20. Thought this might be of interest to some of you. i have no connection with the event so dont know what it'll be like but i reckon i might go and check it out. Sunday 6th Sept. Lincolnshire firewood fair and auction. Stourton Estate, Baumber, Horncastle. The flyer i have says it is for users and producers of firewood, and people who just fancy a day out. it looks like there will be demos of horse logging, carving, climbing and also machinery and burners etc on show.
  21. fantastic, and looks like a bit of a tight spot. i need to up my game and try something other than a mushroom.
  22. we had the green thing on demo the other week, it was a great machine, only let down by the chipper in my opinion. The feed rollers just didnt.
  23. i,m hoping to show my face again, not 100% but i'll chuck some extra meat for the bbq in car if i come along.
  24. only a toy for the very rich i think, but the ammount of work on them is amazing....
