  1. read an article where they were suggesting leaving rough cuts and big splits for the bugs and also saw some in a small wildlife park in N Wales, but never done it and never seen anything as fancy as those! Round here they dont even want to see dead timber standing, even in a woodland setting. Just had to fell 2 on a new planting site even though I advised leaving them as a perch for birds of prey, apparently kestrels etc like them when hunting mice and voles so they also serve as an establishment tool by aiding vole control!
  2. I usually keep 2 piles in the house, one that I burn from and one drying out for the next night. Next day add a new pile where I burned from previous day and burn from the other, never have any problems, doesnt matter how wet it is outside. May be different if they are sawn on all sides though. Kev.
  3. mind reading would be a good start! Kev.

I could do with one in the Lincs area if anyone knows of one Kev.
  7. Leslie Ash El Mcpherson must be more!!!!
  8. I like these sort of planting jobs, mostly what we get is putting in thousands of whips on new road builds. I like to see a scheme take effect though. I have been known to do a bit of guerilla work, both planting (mainly in gaps in local hedges) and also the odd bit of pruning to improve form or remove dead wood. Kev.
  9. I appreciate that there have been several threads covering some of this subject matter, but I could do with some guidance. The company I work for are getting very little tree work now, it is mostly commerciel landscaping. I dont mind the smaller planting jobs but dont like 3 months at the side of a new bypass. I want to go out on my own and already have a few good contacts. I will be undertaking a business course, but want to know really about the insurance side of things. What do I need legally and who are the best people to go with. If poss, rough price guides would be great, but I appreciate that money talk can often be considered vulgar. thanks, Kev.
  10. Stevebullman said "wotcha doing with the climbing wall mate" the wall is owned by Lincolnshire Scout Council with interest from the county council, The Lincoln Scout Mountain Activity Team, of which I am a founder member are one of the main users of the wall at public and scouting events in the area. it weighs in at 2700Kg and is in th e region od 35 feet long when in road mode. It stands at just over 25 feet when upright, is raised by hydraulics from its own battery and is a fantastic thing to introduce climbing to kids, we also use it to teach our junior team members rescue techniques and as a promotional tool. People seem to move out of your way when they see it coming down the road. The picture was taken on North Luffenham airfield following a national scout parascending camp. vduben said "i love the first pic where the front and back wheels are on totally differen camber, amazing how much they will actually go" At the mement the Land Rover is on standard but old and tired springs. It will flex considerably more than that if pushed, that is just a parking space at our district scout camp a couple of years ago. I have a 2" lift kit waiting to be fitted along with a few other goodies, but just dont seem to have a lot of free time. Once complete it should go a bit further, also new tyres will be added, a couple of sizes taller. It is a toy as well as a work machine. As I work for myself only part time at the moment, I manage with that and a trailer, occasionally borrowing a tractor and trailer from a mate for bigger jobs. Kev.
  11. a couple of shots of my baby. Kev.

  13. yeah, I have a pyranha creek 280, river running boat, had it 10 years, learnt to paddle as a scout and went on to do races (8,16 & 32 miles) before moving on to white water stuff. Also spent 3 weeks kayaking off the coast of southern Chile in 95. Great wildlife. Want a nice big open canoe now so the wife and dog can come out to play. Kev.
  14. couple of pics from the churchyard oak.
  15. Well blown this weekend too! got a very rotten and split oak tree to sectional fell, just to make it more interesting it is overhanging a mausoleum for the local nobility in the local church yard. I have had to dismantle a dry stone wall to make a path to get a cherry picker in (darent climb it). Only got the picker for a day on hire so its flat out tomorrow, and possibly a lie in on Sunday if all goes well. Unfortunately my usual groundy / labourer is unavailable so it may not run too smoothly. This is all after a week of weed control and a night shift grass cutting (for traffic management reasons). No beer for me this week. Just need to give up the day job so I can concentrate on doing my own thing, but it seems such a big step at the moment. Not good with the paperwork side of things. Would do a business stidies night class if I had the time. Kev.
  16. Murphy (black Lab) is not feeling photogenic today due to just having his bits removed to prevent a recurence of prostate infection. To say he is sulking would be an understatement. Pics to follow when hes feeling better. Kev.
  17. Hi all, anyone got any experience of the online degree course? I want to further my education but am not sure if this is the way to go. Also not getting a massive ammount of tree work at moment due to poor managers at work, dont know if this would get in the way of the studies as it suggests work would be useful in the studies. Any info or feelings gratefully received. Kev.
  18. decent terms and conditions, also not enough tree work and too much landscaping Kev.

  20. Hi folks Ive just been asked to sort a tree with a serious lean over a fairly busy road, I think it needs a closure to be safe, anyone know the procedure to be followed or who I need to contact as I am fairly new to this game. Kev.
