  1. peace on earth....... only joking..... 088 would be nice, chipper, tipper, more climbing gear (although I have just ordered a few prezzies for me!) new top handle saw, ppe etc... the list is endless really....
  2. Hi, after a book with tree disease / fungi...... just a basic as I am very rusty, an recommendations? Kev.
  3. just an addition, the [platypus system is easy to install, best if the trees are in place before installation as you can allign with the edge of the rootball easier. if the ground is too hard, a jack hammer can be used on the end of the bar to make life easier, otherwise a post knocker or sledgehammer. insert anchors until cable loops are level with the bottom of the pit. when the ratchet cable is passed through and tightened it willpull the anchors up slightly, turning them in the ground and providing greater resistance.
  4. I would reccomend minimal manure / compost but possibly use a slow release fertilizer pellet. Trees seem to root well until roots reach the extent of the pit / manure, then hit a flat spot as the roots enter the less fertile surrounding soil. This can in my experience cause problems, we always use square pits as roots can be funnelled round inside a circular one causing a weak undersized root plate. The platypus system is great if the soil conditions are right. soft ground may not provide enough resistance as the straps are tightened. also be aware of underground services. I was recently asked to use them near a 6 foot sewer main.... I refused. Underground stakes work well in slightly softer soil as the can be angled to fight against the rootball. As long as the rootball is not completely enclosed there should be few problems with them becoming "pot-bound". Just use a good stiff root barrier fabric in 3 - 4" wide strips under the wires. I have done this with both stainless braided wire with ratchets (as on the platypus system) and also using high tensile fencing wire which also seems to work ok. Hope this is of some use. Kev.
  5. never had to go through with this. usually the sight of the trailer full of brash being reversed down their drive is enough to break out the wallet!
  6. a good prize list indeed, have just gone through the donations process to buy my tickets. nice to support a home grown charity for a change. Kev.
  7. I have used underground stakes with wire, dead mans anchors and also the platypus system (from greentech i think) in various locations all without problem. If vandalism is a problem in the area, then trees will just be snapped off at the level of the stakes. to protect rootballs just use a strip of a good thick rootbarrier fabric. Kev.
  8. no piccies at mo as never around till after dark. will get some at weekend as going round to cut a hedge. Kev.
  9. any idea where I can go to learn this? I have dabbled a bit in the past, but would like some proper training..... Kev.
  10. wouldnt know where to start, would that be more cost effective? he has already had a quote of around 1200 from someone..... its a case of having to deal with the previous owners inappropriate planting. might be better getting rid and spending couple of hundred on a decent sized replacement. council are ok with that option, he just wanted to save it if possible. Kev.
  11. Anyone know of anywhere that moves semi mature trees?? A client of mine has a red oak that is quite close to his house, and he would like it moved if possible. trunk dia. is roughly 10 inches. not too tall though. Kev.
  12. hope its not too late, but seems I voted with the majority anyway. Kev.
  13. This is todays delivery of trees, which I am planting in Coventry city centre.
  14. Ash ???
  15. reckon you could spike in them....lacking ppe though
  16. first was number of the beast by iron maiden and the last was diet for a new america by 58 saw foo fighters last night at notts..... into my top 5 gigs ever out of over 300 Kev

  19. can we have a seperate thread with full spec of the landrover. As a devotee of all things bearing the green oval (and previously owner of a heavily modded 1963 model) I am always interested to see what people have done to theirs. Kev. p.s. lots of piccies too!!!!
  20. most of you will know this but is worth mentioning here I think. If calling emergency services from a mobile, dial 112 rather than 999. apparently it is easier for them to triangulate your location. It may just make the difference one day. Kev. p.s. all the best to your mate.
  21. Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall Humpty Dumpty had a great fall The structure of the wall was incorrect So he won a grand with Claims Direct. It's Raining, It's Pouring. Oh ****, it's Global Warming. Jack and Jill went into town To fetch some chips and sweeties. He can't keep his heart rate down And she's got diabetes. Mary had a little skirt with splits right up the sides and everywhere that Mary went the boys could see her thighs. Mary had another skirt 'twas split right up the front ...But she didn't wear that one often. Mary had a little lamb her father shot it dead. Now it goes to school with her between two chunks of bread. Simple Simon met a pie man going to the fair. Said Simple Simon to the pie man 'What have u got there?' Said the pie man unto Simon Pies you dickhead. Mary had a little lamb it ran into a pylon. 10,000 volts went up its arse and turned its wool to nylon. Georgie Porgie Pudding and Pie kissed the girls and made them cry. When the boys came out to play he kissed them too cause he was gay. Jack and Jill went up the hill to have a little fun. Jill, the dill, forgot her pill, and now they have a son. Jack and Jill Went up the hill And planned to do some kissing. Jack made a pass and grabbed her ass Now two of his teeth are missing. Mary had a little lamb Its fleece was white and wispy. Then it caught Foot and Mouth Disease And now it's black and crispy
  22. I think you need the quals to be a lecturer, but most of these establishments also use skills instructors for some lessons ( I presume to keep costs down) and there are no formal quals for this. I studied at Riseholme near lincoln fairly recently and they have a lecturer who has climbed but also use a local arborist to run the various courses. both great blokes. learnt a lot from them, although there were others who were less useful. Kev.
  23. I believe they are legally binding. I think ther will be some info on ebay about its auction process. have a look and if it concurs then contact ebay and they should follow it up. Kev.
  24. I think you should have it done in a colour that will allow your logo to stand out in its usual colour, so if the logo is green, maybe yellow would work, green also goes well on an orange background. Kev.
  25. I am up for this, and may be able to bring along a tent big enough for 20 or so to sit around in if the weather isnt suitable for al fresco sitting. All manner of group catering gear also possibly available through scouts ( I am local QM) Burko waterboiler for constant hot drinks also a possibility. Kev. presume it would be over a weekend????
