  1. these trenches are not recent excavations, they have been there since the mausoleum was built 300 years ago, i dont know their purpose, but i can see no roots. apparently there is a tomb under the mausoleum which was blocked up during the construction, as part of the planning consent. I have removed a couple of branches on a tree to provide access for the specialist builders undertaking the work, and also removed a large dangerous oak over a year ago, but dont want to undertake any work which will offer no benefit to the church building, and i fail to see how a crown reduction would result in a root reduction anyway.... architects...... only met 1 good one... would a crown reduction impact on root growth in any way at all?????
  2. he thinks the roots are affecting the foundations of the mausoleum!
  3. be careful with the tramadol.... my brother is in a real mess after becoming addicted to these following a prescription for a back injury.... he realised what was happening and tried to wean himself off them, but all is not going well.... little support from the doc as "they are not addictive", following a change of doc, he is now back on course! Jonesie, all the best with the op and recovery, do as they tell you and dont rush it! Kev.
  4. i have been asked to quote for reductions on 7 oaks in my village churchyard. there is to be some work done on a mausoleum attatched to the building, and the architect involved has expressed concern at the proximity of the oaks (15 to 20 feet). there is a six foot deep trench around the church in the area concerned with no evidence of roots showing. It is the roots he is worried about. i am not convinced that the roots are causing, or likely to cause a problem to the building, also i dont think a crown reduction will make a lot of difference to his percieved problem (but i am willing to be told otherwise!). any advice welcomed. I am willing and prepared to undertake the work if it is beneficial, but as the church has a very small congregation, and limited budget, i am reluctant to give them a bill for unneccesary work. what are the collective opinions of arbtalk????
  5. had three call outs on sunday, then spent the last two days running round picking up bits that noone spotted.... only one climb, smallish London plane, moving round like a rodeo bull.... quite exciting really but for the cars passing and the wind trying to rip the branches from my hands before i could drop them!
  6. we have something similar going on with heating oil round here.... the scum follow the delivery trucks, wait to see if anyone is home, if coast is clear, when truck leaves they help themselves to the oil!!
  7. me too please.....
  8. If only I had an unsterilized chipper, i could breed from it and produce lots of baby chippers to sell!!
  9. The grove idea sounds best to me.... in my experience (Planted hundreds of thousands of trees of all sizes over the last 5 years!), the larger the tree, the higher the risk of failure. even on a 18 footer, you would need a rootball of 6 foot to give it a fair chance of survival. This would not be easy to prepare without the commercial equipment used by nurseries. If you take into account the time you would have to put into the preparation, it would probably work out more economical to buy one in from one of the bigger suppliers.

  16. they are usually pretty ladder like to climb anyway.... as in previous post, i normally just use harness and strop, no rope.... unless they are massive of course, never had any shake before... have they ever been topped before?? if so there will be a few smaller stems rather than a single bigger one anyway.... biggest problem will be branches getting hung up as they fall...
  17. what about the guy that owns the fishing rights.... he must know more.... otherwise there would be access issues for the fishing wouldnt there??
