  1. I have some very large oak blanks to seal, recently cut and left in half logs. I usually use paraffin wax on my blanks as shown in the picture but these are way to big to dip in a tray of the stuff and would use a large amount, thinking of thin PVA but any better suggestions before this heat starts to crack them? S.
  2. Can someone explain DBH (diameter at breast height) measurement to me. or is it as simple as it sounds?
  3. No cant do as the grass needs cutting and edging.
  4. Don't get me wrong the mill was fine, it was just too small for the logs I had to deal with, but as a hobby it is hard to justify a bigger mill and saw at the mo, but I am working on the SWMBO.
  5. First "On Site" milling yesterday, got a call from a local farmer who said he had a "bit of oak for ya". Well yes he had, 25" diameter by 20` long fairly straight oak trunk, neatly placed on the grass margin. So methinks, turning up with my little mill and my trailer, I need a bigger saw!!!! However I have managed to buck the trunk into lengths that I could manhandle. I did manage to mill a couple of them but as they are for turning blanks I then cut them in half to remove the pith and at least be able to carry them to the trailer.... just. A few more trips needed to clear the lot back to the workshop for more finishing. The upshot of this is I have the greatest respect for you guys who do this every day. It was hot, grubby and bl00dy hard work, and I only do it for fun. It is very different on site when you need to touch up a chain, fill the tanks, and clean the filter of a saw, knee deep in dust and chippings and a long way from the workshop. Having to move the timber by hand granted, no mechanical help. Saying that the little Chinese saw kept on going almost none stop for a good few hours, 5 liters of fuel through it and only got a rest when I needed a fag! Now sat in the office, with sore back, stiff knees and various bumps and bruises. Again my hat off to you.

I use a similar saw on the 24" mill with an Oregon bar, the clamps must be correctly sited especially at the nose where the sprocket sits, I also noted the clamps do not have to be super tight to grip the bar safely.
  9. Seems there are a few on the market already
  10. Looks like it would have landed right out of the driveway....... Is it a Stihl or husky?
  11. It seems there are a good few of these Asian wasps here in Norfolk, there was a nest found not 5 miles from where I sit. I need a bigger swatter!!!!!!
  12. Had a load of the little scrawny ones in the office again today, and two of these big mothers, apparently they are an invasive Asian wasp!!!!!!
  13. I went king-size and used 2 x 2 lol
  14. Go see her with flowers and a smile, bet she will tell the company to leave you alone.....
  15. Gave it a right good test last night, its quiet, accurate, quick, and at £20 a bl00dy bargain. great bit of kit.
  16. Got a nest in the roof above my office, one or two of the wee beasties have entered the open window, a quick squirt with hair spray has there wings set like a glider they can then be hoovered up after crash landing, its like a WW1 dog fight here at times.......
  17. Just had a trip to Lidl and got the £19.99 Florabest bench sharpener, just had a quick look whilst back at the office and for under £20 it looks pretty fair. Even has a little LERD so you can sharpen in the dark. Plastics are thick and strong, base casting looks ok and the wheel appears of a reasonable quality, all the adjusters are sturdy and accurate. It does 1/4" 0.325 and 3/8 chains. Will let you know more after I have tried it in anger, been saving a couple of chains to test on. S.
