  1. I hadn't really considered the weather and other considerations mentioned, but yes sitting here in my "office" with the rain rattling down, I guess there are negatives to. Never the less it was a good experience to see what I have been reading on this forum in action, and yes I will recommend him where I can.
  2. I had a local arborist round on Friday to remove two leylandi, a 20` and a 30`, both in an awkward site with a very small drop zone and several awkward BT line and other obstacles . I was the brash monkey but admit I spent a lot of my time just watching this guy at work. Now I had kept him fed and watered and copious cups of tea before he climbed, he must have the strength of Hercules and the bladder of an African bull elephant as it was and hour and 50 till he finished the first and reached the floor. I know it was only a smallish job but he was meticulous, very safety conscious and a nice guy to. A real credit to the profession, so hats off to you guys, a nice office but bl00dy hard graft. Also got to help feed the Timberwolf, what a great bit of kit, was surprised at how quick the brash was dealt with, would have taken me a fortnight of bonfire's to get rid, he even cleared up with a blower at the end of the job.
  3. Good question, I tend to seal the end grain mostly but on a rough turned bowl I guess some bare timber needed to let the water escape, Steve more details please.
  4. The three cutter sizes will cover up to 18" X 8" blanks.
  5. Result on a rough bit of very green oak
  6. Just arrived from New Zealand. Great bit of kit to core blanks to make nested bowls and more from a blank.
  7. Many years and a lot more hair ago I lived and breathed Rockabilly, so it was a great day out on Sunday at Hemsby as one of their rock and roll weekends were going on to see all the old cars, hear the music, and relive my misspent youth. Even a live band outside on of the cafes looked like a scene from 60 years ago. lol Then the good lady informs me she has booked the below group for our wedding celebrations early next year. Now I gotta regrow the hair, shave the beard and find some clothes that fit me. Not sure if I still got a dance in me ol bones though........ http://www.awgb.co.uk/awgbforum/index.php/topic,4303.0.html There is a thread on restoring these on the AWGB forum. S.
  9. Skill Set: Making A Butterfly Spline (Or "Arikata") | Make: A link for the butterfly joints. S.
  10. Been several nest here in North Norfolk, we had a wasp nest above the office and the chap that came to deal said his company has had a "lot" of the Asian nests to deal with. Hopefully the queens will now have mated and left and the colonies will die off. Another migrant species to deal with........
  11. What a great thread, had me giggling in my coffee!
  12. I had my first experience of the fairies last week. A local farmer has felled an oak and asked if I wanted it for turning.... Hell yes I says. Now I only have a domestic trailer so I cut and hauled as much as I could over two days then had to return to work. The few logs left were around 3` diameter and a good few feet long, certainly too big to manually move. I returned 3 days later and.... nothing, again like TGB this was not in open view and there were no tire marks or fresh saw dust, so I can only assume the Fairies just flew it away!!!!!!!!!
  13. This must be the 4th or 5th time this seller has sold this, his name is linked to various machines and dubious origin!!!!!

    Overloaded?

    He needs a bigger truck!
  15. That is so cool. Are the blocks simply set in concrete, if so was it a dry or wet mix please? S.
  16. Hard to tell the size but could be a brown rat or similar from a decayed owl pellet
  17. I would strongly recommend one of these, excellent infa red filming, hd pictures and video, easy to program and setup 6 months battery life and sends a text and picture if activated so even in some Scousers nick your camera you have an image of them. Put it up a tree in your cab or where ever you happen to be working.
  18. That explains why I never heard of it. Cool bark though.
  19. Has anybody ever seen or worked with this wood. I had never heard of it, as a turner there must be a reason why it is not used.
  20. A real pain for splitting...... I have tried all ways to stop it but invariably it seems to crack.
  21. No its just a gentle taper cut onto about 6" thick MDF so you can "jam" various diameters into it, the MDF seems to grip enough to finish I do put the tail stock up initially then remove for the final finishing of the center, If I remember I will take a couple of snaps tonight and post them for you. Also it helps get all the fruit similar sizes which always helps as they need to be similar to fit the chuck.
  22. Try making a tapered jam chuck I use MDF on a face plate, then what ever fruit from plums to apples can be reverse mounted and the bottom gently finished and polished, I find sanding sealer and a light wax gives a good finish. The stalk can be made with a small dowel sharpened in a pencil sharpener to give a taper then cut at an obtuse angle, and as I said before a clove in the bottom finishes them of nicely. Great shapes its difficult to make them look "real". nice work.
  23. The perfect excuse to add to the tool archive.....

  25. Spotted these, too far away for me but a great basis for a DIY kiln methinks......
