  1. Been scratching my head about this recently Rob. Mostly got them from my dealer but over the last year he's erratic in both quality and price with the trends on both going in the wrong direction. So I've just invested in break/make tools and am in the process of trying a few 'home made' chains and will be getting some reels from you soon. (As you know, I use mainly 1/4" chain, so none of the 'cheapies' do that!)

  3. Search on here for him, he's a member. (Also World and English Champion Carver)
  4. Simon O'Rourke has some Tsumura carving bars and a good contact with the company. He might be worth asking. I got mine directly from Japan, but the import and Vat duties made them expensive.
  5. We have a Clarke Tiger which does all we need. Floor cleaning, van washing, log degunging etc. and is surprisingly good. They do a slightly smaller one that is nearer your budget.
  6. Places like Axminster and Screwfix do diamond sharpening 'stones' at 6" x 2" that are ideal for dressing bars, even Sugi ones. Stick them on a piece of flat wood or in a slot cut with a router at a right angles to get perfect dressing :) They work out cheaper than files anyway, as they last longer.
  7. It is true..... SS_Richard_Montgomery
  8. Move the freight from LHR to Manston in Kent, which already has a runway capable of taking any aircraft presently flying. It has dual carriageway roads to London and beyond, and a high speed rail link passing the airfield. Only problem is the owners bought it and closed it down in order to build houses on. Houses they can't get planning permission for! Oh, and the local council are too lily-livered to slap a compulsory purchase order on it.
  9. Bestwood is the one I use most regularly, couple of gallons a month. Also used other brands. Unfortunately, don't have much access to arbtalk during the day as I'm out carving and covering them with danish oil.
  10. Did a couple of full swords last year as a commission and you're right Ian, symmetry ain't easy Well done
  11. If you're stuck, I could do it for you. It's about 20 miles from me. :0
  12. Oh, what a pity. Does that mean I've got and excuse to buy a CS620ESX?? (Then I'll take the 24" bar off the 501 and put the 20" quarter tip running 1/4" chain back on it) As far as the tiny Echo is concerned, I'm just waiting for the rear handled version to be released. It will make a superb detail saw with an .043 1/4" bar and chain. Already told my dealer I want one as soon as it is announced. :)
  13. That'd go nice on my CS501
  14. Unlike some other makes, ALL Echo saws are the same build quality and ALL carry a 2 year Pro warranty (5 year for domestic use).
  15. For me, cost and weight are an issue, but if they weren't I choose the 390 for the manoeuvrability and more modern design. I prefer the mesh filters of the 390/501 as they last longer. are easily blown out and therefore don't clog so readily.
  16. Nicely formed Simon. Those Tsumura bars are wicked, ain't they
  17. It will come back with twice the force!
  18. Sprockets are cheap, and easy to change on a 501 I've run mine with both .325 and 1/4" As far as replacing the 450's with 390's, no problem. Originally ordered 390's for the 'hooligans' but, at that time, Echo were out of 390's and we got 450's instead. One point that has been missed here. The 450's have the older Echo smaller fuel caps, whereas the 390's have a larger hole that take stihl/Oregon spouts. (The Husky spout fits both)
  19. Got both. The 390 is my preferred choice. Lighter, and therefore more manoeuvrable. Seems to have the same torque but is more frugal with fuel. Both running 16" carving bars on 1/4" chain. 4x CS450's with .325 on 15" for the lads as ground saws. 12 months hammering, 0 problems or breakdowns. That's after 2 x Stihl 261's lasted less than 3 months with the same hooligans using them! If it is for yourself, I'd go CS390ESX :)
  20. Couldn't have put it better m'self! :)
