  1. and it's a superb saw
  2. Dime tips and heavy cutting just don't go hand in hand. Quarter tips are better, but it will still depend on the size of the saw. You would be better off with two saws, one for the 'heavy' cutting and one for the detailing. If that is not possible, then 1/4" 0.050 chain/sprocket with a 16" quarter tip bar and a 10/12" dime tip would be the way forward until you can get a second saw.
  3. Another vote here for Rye Oil
  4. Nice one Rick, and happy birthday
  5. I've done a couple of bars the same Ian, and I think it's down to the chain being too slack allowing it to slap as it goes around the tip. It seems to burr the links as well, which accelerates the damage. Some of it can be removed by dressing the bar, preferably with a diamond stone, as files won't touch the stellite tip. I've got a small block of wood with a groove routered in it to take the diamond stone, which keeps it square to the bar. I'll post a pic tomorrow if I remember. This kind of thing
  6. The law of common sense! Oh, sorry, scrap that. H&S took over!
  7. As in "%&ck 1t, should have bought the Echo!!" ? :thumbup1:
  8. Why do you want to use a top handled saw for carving?

  10. Go for it !! :)
  11. £5 a month + £10 a year for domain United Hosting
  12. Echo CS281 with 10" Sugihara R7 using the Stihl 0.043 1/4 chain with the heels ground off the teeth. Echo CS 280, 12" Tsumura bar running Oregon 1/4 .050, also with heels of teeth knocked off. :)
  13. Nice Si. Been trying to create a Fairy village for a while now, but they keep selling!
  14. And how many of either have you used?
  15. Welcome Ian. Otherwise, I like the concept with the feathers added.
  16. Nice try Ian. Slightly more beak and less hood over the beak ('cos I don't know it's proper name) and a hole through for the nostril would make it even better. HIH
  17. I have both. The 501sx is the better saw, and great with 18" on it. The 450 is bomb proof but better with a 15" than an 18" and still a tad heavier than the 501 and not as powerful. The fuel filler caps on the 501 are also a tad bigger so no struggling to fill it. They're all easy to start, but the decomp on the 501 makes it sooo easy
  18. Nice one Ian. Did you cut the wings right through on the angle to relieve shrinkage/splitting? I use a sacrificial slab of plywood between the carving and the welded plate, save a lot of sharpening ;)

    Bar oils

Rye Oil is excellent, but as noted, can be rather thick in the weather we've experienced recently. A drop of paraffin to thin it slightly works fine though.
  21. Wordpress and United Hosting.
  22. Alternately, run a Quarter tip bar if the chain is 3/8 lo-pro
  23. You could always try www.sugiharabarsuk.co.uk It caught me out for a week or so about 3 weeks ago
