  1. +1 have a echo and that is a DOG. it starts stops you have to feather it to get it run right when running good saw now using it on aspen and looks as if it likes it so is working a bit better. but not perfect. unlike my Husky starts first pull and runs cracking saw. tempted but after the one we have bit concerned to buy another one
  2. just a qestion as i thought of having the heated handle version. if you are starting and stopping does the handle still get warm. as its to do with the flywheel turning that warms it up true. i get white finger and they say heated handles reduce this.
  3. thanks for the replys have some birch plenty of hazel, beech.ash, will look for some thorn next time i do one. is alder any good.
  4. being bored with the dark winter nights. and my hedging tools all sharp was looking at making a few things. have some hazel for walking sticks but like to have a go at making spoons. what is good wood and what wood to avoid. and saw about carving knives what are good makes. read the bit about drawing out spoon on wood then cutting down to sart carving . so lets give it a go. do you need seasond wood or is green ok. trust you can advise. like to come on your spoon course but a bit far. thank you for any help
  5. lets clear things up did the chap who rang did he give you his name, and his title. NO someone is winding you up sad people. yes did he give you his number to ring him back ,no again scam. if yes ring the number and see what you get. VOSA will not ring you to say you need this type of licence. if the truck is registered with a log book then you are ok if you are still concerned then go to the local VOSA testing station and get them to check it and see what they have to say . if you are not hauling with it only using it as a agg truck then you are ok. must have a test station near you. have one in most big towns. plus what i find very strange is they would have sent you a letter to say that the have evidence that you have been using truck for such and can you explain if truck is being used for X or Y. not ring smells very smelly. maybe wrong
  6. parish lengthman/ hedge layer/coppicer.
  7. can you still get windsor chain used to get it and was a very good chain. what is the dogs do da of chain. and for normal cutting and felling what type i use super chisel as i find it better to use
  8. i use aspen in all my saws. my echo which hates to run properly runs better on aspen. did go back to normal 2 stroke but was a pain mixing the fumes coming off. also saws run longer on aspen to normal 2 stroke i beleive run faster. and run better than on normal. pity it was not a tad cheaper. so it matched normal petrol and the mix to go in still about £4 dearer.
  9. +1 billhook or a slasher long handle bill hook. as for trees two places do very good native trees first choice Murrey Mc clean abingdon does very good native species and has some failrly tall or mill farm trees nr winchester does very good plants. as for felling need someone to survey the wood for you and earmark those which need felling. need to let light into the wood this will allow the native flowers blue, white bells. primrose. to flourish. see if you can find a charcoal burner if you do not need the wood good luck and welcome to this site show us your photo,s as you progress with the work.

  18. +3 do not go there the council will get there legal begals on you like a ton of bricks. and the bad press it will make. not worth it walk away and leave well alone.
  19. Greenlands insurance very good firm will help out
  20. if its a ancient woodland with hazel.ash and other trees then the douglas are not doing the wood much good. he could make money by felling firs. have a coppicer renting the wood to make hazel products. if you want to keep the dormice you need to coppice it for its products so it is coppiced on a rotational basis not all at same time so there is wood to use again in 7 years time. now i am not a expert but the droppings from the firs are not going to do the ph of the wood a lot of good. plus bonus if firs go and light comes back in bluebells in spring.
  21. cracking ax,s have a little one i use for hedgelaying so sharp. good investment. pity they do not make bill hooks. or do they or could they make one
