  2. have a skoda roomster 132k on clock on a 07 never missed a beat untill the other day alternator has gone. apart from that cracking car 65mpg average 1.4 derv if you want room and a 2 wheel drive then look at the roomster get loads in boot and its good off road
  3. that second cutter talk about heath robinson what a pig of a JOB IT MADE OF HEDGE looked ok to lay. ist one looked good ideal for high hedges. and if its a fir:thumbup: not for native hedge. need a sticker ban the flail save the hedgerow.
  4. he c will want either south or midland but can still show other styles how its done just make them finish off above two. yes wonder if there is a nice arb sponser who would be willing to put up some trophys for the event:thumbup:
  5. well the idear of having a day hedgelaying is growing all the time. well i need to speak to farmer and ask if we can have some of his hedge to lay. looking at if poss doing September time when its a bit warmer. and maybe have a day showing how to lay hedges then on the sunday have a fun comp. need to find a sponsor to sponsor event. any one else interested in joining the event then please post or pm then can start to get numbers who may want to come along. let me know folks re above if up for it
  6. been on top of one of the highest points near winchester cutting paths back was keeping warm with spade but wind lazy more like bone idle did that cut through. i like working in the winter but when its this cold had to keep going back to truck to thaw ears out. ran out of coffee and what i had was luke warm . been nice to have had ghillie on go but no go as footpath. still laid a few bits dorset style. do not know if it is right but held stems down ok. saved grubbing out some nice little thorns. hi Digga yes need to get it during start of season. have a idear Mad matty wants to see how to lay a hedge invite chris evans over. say for children in need . would you be up in coming over Digga
  7. ok then will go and see farmer and see if we can lay some of his hedge. if your up for it Dorset as well get a few interested may be able to lay a few yards. he may then get rest done o i wish.
  8. hi if you can find a hedge does not need to be a long one. then as dorset said more than happy to come down and show how to lay south of england style. all i ask is coffee and a bacon buttie at lunch time. i am sureDorset will come over and show you the ropes aswell. let me know if you do have one. only cost would be stakes and binders looking at £2.50 a bundle if not let me know asap and will go and ask if i can use a hedge for laying. ideal for new to game virgin hedge about 12years old. but there not all like that few and far between most old buggers still can learn how to cut stems and lay. plus getting stakes in and putting binders on. do about 10 yards in a day. so it would not be a bust gutting day. if any one else fancy having a go then same applys. if it is on my hedge try and lay some lunch on. and maybe a draft afterwards to wash dust down.
  9. 1st of march is end of season for doing any hedges unless it is a hazzard to roads or footpaths. but if still doing a hedge can carry on just need o look to see if they are nesting. they are pairing up and getting nesting material so not much time left to do it
  10. not as baren as were you been but on top of a hill just outside winchester can see as far east as eye can see and that was cold sweat shirt shirt twojumpers body warmer and and aigle flat cap with ear muffs. it was cold. still blackthorn winter end of week will warm up. i hope
  11. now hedgelaying on chris evans breakfast show this morning chap from devon talking about it. can only be good all this air time. lets trust it brings in more work for hedgelayers
  12. +1 1st of march is a bit dodgy . the fine is 5k for the female leaving nest 5k for the nest 5k for any eggs lost. and will check nest so blackbird 10 eggs need a deep pocket. its you who is on the firing line not the council. bet if it went pete tong he wipe his hands and say not me. so be careful. can it not wait untill ist august then get on with it
  13. Prince Charles will only use hand tools will not use a chain saw. i break out in a sweat with axe. but keeps you fit. just need to pack up the baccie good bloke had a nice yorkshire he was using. laying dorset style today had no hedge as such but not going to get rid of some nice thorns so laid them so off footpath. council would have cut them down and threw in bank. will regrow and make a nice little corridor for small animals.if it can be kept then keep it not scrub out for a footpath. my little bit will go a small way to keep the carbon footprint down.
  14. lost mine aswell. some very good cutters i saw and knew. old boys tie club
  15. for 200 mtrs a newcastle spade with a metal handle welded on it does a good job if you are going to plant loads then a small tractor with a single furrow plough does the job just plant in and tamp down.
  16. not seen a hedge yet that could not be laid even hard flailed ones. i did a 60 year old blackthorn that was flailed nearly to death but laid it now growing its slow coming back but its got its life back. keep flailing them and in the end just die from rot and disease and then you have no hedge. so more laid hedges and leave the flail in the shed. to rot
  17. the oregen has its own self sharpening and Forest and Arb winchester are doing them for £500 including spare battery ideal for up a tree or for hedgelaying or the like. last a couple of hours on a charge so with spare gets poss a days work from the two, battery's. and you can get a inverter to go in truck to charge them up for about £30
  18. yes forgot about that bit remiss of me very good but to short again
  19. Prince Charles is the patron of the national hedgelaying society. if you looked close you will see he has his badge on his coat with his gold bar underneath. very few have one of them. given to those who have given and supported hedgelaying. or for long service in hedgelaying.
  20. that will be John Savings of oxford one of the top cutters in the country and fortunet to have had a training day with him worth going on a course with John learn a lot if you want to lay midland style. but other very good cutters South of England hedgelaying do training days and they have a few who go to highgrove for the comp plus the guys you know. and surrey hedgelaying society have got one or two who have been to charles pad. love to go need to win some big comps. or go as a caddy for a hedge layer.
  21. yes the trailer did not show it very well and the clip was not very long. could have given a bit more time over to the hedgelaying and less on the other stuff. but the producers are trying to sell to the townies. what the country is like and sometimes forget that there are people who would like to see some of the documentaries a bit longer and more in depth to put it over better. i sure there is over a hours of filming now siting in the waste bin not shown. have a chat to a guy i know see if he can get me a uncut version of the hedgelaying. see who i can recognize.
  22. have to say Charles is all for his hedgelaying and has a comp every year at his estate for invited cutters. most being supreme cutters in there own right. and he looks after them all with hot food and coffee laid on plus trophy's . but Charles is a very good hedge layer and if any one needs someone in high places to promote these things then all power to his cutting elbow. plus it may get some work for cutters after tonight so it is all good telly in this respect.
  23. you need to apply to HCC to get on there aproved list of contractors once on they will if needed get you to tender for work. but HCC have there own arb gang. but know a couple of firms who are on there list and do work for them. its getting on that approved list. good luck speak to there procurement section should be able to put point you in the right direction. but being in the forest you should be in with a good chance. especially if we have high winds and need a road clear and its near to you would call you out. during 87 storms worked solid for 3 weeks clearing roads for them good money then helped pay for 3 new saws plus a good sum over
  24. on tonight's programme had a bit on the hedgelaying comp at highgrove home of prince Charles. he was laying some hedge. and saw some top cutters in action Alan ashby of kent laying south of england good to see on main stream telly. did you get a invite Dorset. doing many styles.
  25. Dorset you would have been well at home on the island the bank was higher than that. and laying south of England. have to come down new season and do some Dorset style to learn how to lay on top of a bank. need ice grips on boots:thumbup: so the bit you had was not good either luck of the draw. judges never take into acount the bit you have is crap so will not be a silk dress when finished. but thats comps and judges. just need to smile at them and offer to buy them a coffee.
