  1. when i had a sharpening service i used to sharpen stump grinding teeth. the ones i did were tungsten so very hard. so use a diamond wheel for getting them back up. but its the angles as well that need to be spot on. i know that the ones i did the cost of sharpening them it was cheaper to buy new teeth. normal grinder will make them get to hot and as very hard normal grit stones do not grind them just wears the stone out and can melt the solder holding the tips in.
  2. love swifts old house had them such a joy to watch them as it got dusk screaming around the houses and as you say so sad when they leave at the end of august. still its spring so look forward to see our summer visitors. and by by winter keep away for the next 9 months:001_tt2:
  3. are you doing at a college all books supplied and its a day with trainer going through it with a tooth comb. then do a mock exam as such he asks questions and its a open house you give the answers back. then the test is multiple choice. so do not panic mr manaring you will be ok. re multiple choice if you may have trouble with this get hold of them now and ask for a reader are you doing your PA6 aswell as without PA6 not much use pa1 as thats just how to use it not use it. very good course learnt a lot. do not believe half of what you hear its not that hard just have a note book and pen to jot down things.
  4. go and get some aspen and run it on that from the start premixed and will run better on aspen than normal 2 stroke all my kit runs on it and works fine
  5. i know one swallow does not make a summer but saw our first one today. normally have a couple of pairs turn up. so looks as if this is the first of the two pair that turn up. and early this year fingers crossed good summer. i know Matt has already had the house martins. is the winter of discontent poor yoreth over. i do hope so not a nice winter. some day been so cold. nearly had frostbite one day hands so cold.
  6. nissan as other posts i have posted d22 yd25 be careful they blew up big time. so check to see if it is a yd25 if so has engine been replaced if not then up to you but i would look for one with a new engine cracking trucks good on fuel pulls my plant trailer with ease. now mine is fixed will keep it untill it goes no more. toyota hens teeth ford ranger maybe at tat price look at the auctions see if they have any coming up may get a good one at the right price
  7. +1 like mine but son in law wants a pair so looking at letting him have them and get the new Sip trousers very good £170 from forest and arb bit more streamlined than the pfanner and let you breath.
  8. get a mini with a auger. the sthils are dreadful n stoney ground last one i used it threw me across garden had bruising down one side where it hit me never again. the hydraulic ones are good as they have the long bar. but on ground round these parts hard work. if i had a lot would use a mini. saying that put in 50 dragons teeth concreted in in a day 3 of us and that was hard chalk flints and roots galore.. we use a string line get our line then use marking paint to mark holes then just dig them so quick.
  9. what do you want to use it for and what size bar do you want to use. if its just general logging then the 550xp is a cracking saw 50cc and that will do most things and its lighter than the 560. if you want a bigger saw then look at the372. i have the 576xp but the 372 is a better saw.
  10. going to have my navara done by having a tipper fitted to back. all aluminum and being built by hand by a aircraft builder. cost £2.500. but the navaras are a good truck just watch the D22 yd25 models. if they have 70k plus and no new engine be warey they do go bang. D40 earlier models had problems later ones believe are ok. but my D22 pulls like a train good on fuel. and tows well. now mine has a new engine will keep it
  11. if you are going to use a brush cutter a lot then get a good second hand Honda or a sthil brushcutter. forget that thing how long it lasts hard to say as for harness. best place in bin get a husky pro harness £80 but you will not know you have it on and can work all day with a brush cutter without tiring.
  12. have your gear marked with smartwater its has your own unique bar code for your postcode so if stuff is picked up and torch is shone on it it lights up like a christmas tree. also do a spray you can put above doors if they break in get sprayed if nicked shine up like a christmas tree not expensive to put in and some insurance companies give discount for fitting it
  13. +1 as my post before the police have a country watch team hampshire have a team based in Petersfield not far away. i am a member and have there poster on front of property. they take all info and as said compile it to get a better picture. and then pass it on for the local police to keep a eye out for sus trucks. so get hold of your local countrywatch officer and give him or her the details. you must be just into west sussex so sussex police
  14. get hold of your countrywatch team and let them know. bound to be seen about more info they get a better picture they have.
  15. what a lovely colour yew is such a beautiful wood.and so underused. maybe because not many yew come around for milling.
  16. every time i stop using saw brake goes on its habit i just knock it on and when carrying it any distance i switch it off. then restart when i get to next job will not change rather be safe than sorry
  17. as for digging posts in if i used a auger around here it would spit me across fields all the ground is chalk with large flints. have a large wrecking bar newcastle shovel shoveler, and a spade and fork. 3 of us dug 50 20 inch holes for dragons teeth in a day and concreted. as for a borer on a digger talking to a friend as was looking at using one and he says they bounce when on stoney ground so have to keep hand digging to remove stones .so just as quick to hand dig. will post photos of dragons teeth that was stoney ground plus roots from trees. next job should be better clay and gravel so bit easier digging.
  18. i stand corrected but have not really noticed it spreading that bad its a pain. and a lot of work is field hedges. next one i do will look. maybe be able to get some plants to grow on.
  19. after reading all the post it makes you take a hard look and makes you be extra careful when using chainsaws. hedge cutters.strimmers. latter have to say without chainsaw trousers and full face visor and helmet the no of stones that have come back and hit legs or hat or visor glad i have had it all on without on torso will hurt head and face could do some damage. they all need the deepest respect and to be treated with care and maintained. a bad maintained saw with a dull blade worse than a sharp one. same for the other two.
  20. +1 i thought they used ash as more common wood than oak. hate to think how much that lot would be.

    Moto GP

i do like moto gp but for real racing on proper roads then it has to be the TT to be able to ride a bike at them speeds on normal roads with wet spots under trees you have to be a very good rider. look forward to see i hope on ITV4 again this year good coverage.
  22. interesting re blackthorn never encountered a problem with blackthorn spreading have to say i do like blackthorn i treat it with the respect it deserves as the thorns are nasty and can be painful and sore for a few days if pierced. but makes a nice thick stock proof hedge if looked after and not flailed to death by the tractor but sadly many a hedge has been flailed to death by inexperienced operators of side arms on tractors. and not been able to grow and make a cracking hedge and save the expense of having to use fencing.
  23. thanks for input lot of plants to think about and with some and blackthorn who would want to climb fence and land in that lot:crying: be a good sideline planting these types of hedge to stop people getting in to properties even if they tried to cut through be bloodied by the time they did get through have plenty of dna.
  24. have to admit its going back many years nicked my leg with my old oleo mac cutting through a fallen tree. underestimated and it cut through and came back lucky had mt chain saw trousers on stopped it dead. and full of kevlar. since then never use saw without my trousers and i am very careful how i cut stuff now learnt my lesson. as for hand saws. a few cutting end of stool on a cut pleach and saw has slipped getting hand only minor. bill hook did me more damage 7 stitches in hand. became infected and unable to work for a week. as i say and did not do teach me cut away when using a sharp tool.
  25. someone who made them used hemp rope put in the slits to aid burning. i am going to have a go have a show coming up in may, be a nice sideline selling these may get more orders for them
