  1. Please explain historic walled kitchen garden,i.e is it listed or linked to a listed property.I wouldn't do a lot other than remove basal growth into the yew hedge. The wall is not going anywhere soon. If the trees were leaning and a windblown rootplate would decimate the wall that might be different, especially if the wall is part of a listing.Though any removal would affect the wall or you would leave a stump in the wall which will lose the tree feature and probably make the situation visually worse off.
  2. It is heeled cos you firm them with your heels. Sorry to be a pedant.
  3. Likely to last for yonks.Looks like good extension growth which points to some vigour. I would remove the dead bark to see sound tissue so you can easily observe how the wound progresses. Shape the wound with a sharp knife to help the flow of water and nutrients up and down the tree.i,e no jagged edges. I would hold off the thinning; if that is done it reduces the trees capacity to get over the wound and adds more.
  4. Employers want you to hit the ground running once in post not find out they have to teach you a whole load of things. I think the portfolio is required to help them speed up the process of assessing your skills suitable for the position; so include anything helpful along those lines. You are likely to have been given a job description- so aim to tick the tasks on the job description and honestly show you are able to do the job. Examples might be-photographs of your tree work, examples of risk assessments and inspections carried out. Computer literacy re inspections. And a nice folder to show you have thought about its presentation. Good luck.
  5. Depends on the Magnolia. Not often necessary in my experience. RHS pruning advice -trees and deciduous shrubs late Winter/Spring, some summer to avoid bleeding sap ;evergreens mid/late Spring; wall trained late Winter/Spring.

    My accident

From someone else you don't know, you are an inspiration. You are so positive but read and learn as much as you can about positive thinking, it will help in the days to come. Construct some good affirmations to progress.
  7. One of the problems is that it had to be a countrywide policy; but on location the house values vary greatly-therefore so do the discounts; it can be a fantastic amount in London. Some purchased properties including flats that are still, or are now surrounded by dodgy council tenants, are unsaleable. They cannot be given away and the owners are stuck.
  8. Quote Has anyone asked to see the title deeds for the land that actually state the LA own it......for as far as I have been informed a council can not own anything, they can only hold property in trust for the public there members represent, the next one is find out if the council is registred as a ltd company, then you have a cae for fraudulant missrepresentation of your interests against them.Quote Truth in that but in the conveyance of the sale the Council will have to prove they have the right to sell. I would be surprised if this has not already been done. Check how the land is classified in the planning policy; if it has been designated for development the policy will sometime have been out for consultation for comments, if you you missed that it will be difficult to fight.Town green status is possible but evidence needs to be collated including witnesses who are prepared to verify long term usage as open space.
  9. Not deep rooted but tangled and difficult to dig out., careful you don't break your spade/shovel shafts.
  10. Involve the local authority. Often it is the Environment Health Dept who deal with cases in line with other Anti-Social Behaviour as High Hedges are defined in the 2003 Act.There is often a fee but there are ways the LA can deal with that. At first read the legislstion is confusing involving measurements, angles from windows etc but the facts are indisputable as they exist on site and are not subjective.
  11. My understanding is that the root system has been comprised often by ploughing, roadworks, though age could do this. The loss of root vigour limits the roots capillary action rise; being no longer able to get enough water to the leaves at the top of the tree. The new water height maximum is found where the stag heading begins.

    Hernia

As posted earlier I had key hole but it still felt like an elephant had kicked me when I woke up.

    Hernia

I was keen to get back to long distance walking and running.I rarely climb these days, but I think climbing is serious exercise.I chose the op as these things do not go away Your circumstances are relative to you so I can only say what happened to me. A couple of years ago I had key hole surgery for an inguinal hernia which was not painful. After surgery I did pay for advice from a sports therapist, these may be a bit more understanding of how keen we are to return to our sporting ways. The programme I followed after researching various sources . Ist week rest after surgery. wks 2-4 short walks(2mls) and some light stretching. wks 4-6 slowly regain strength. Cycling and swimming useful i.e less load bearing 9 weeks for scar hardening to go. No serious exercise for 4 months, stop anytime if pain is felt.
  14. The brown one- Jelly ear?
  15. I should know this but would welcome any views. I have a couple of red oak seedlings which have some sentimental value.I nurture them a bit in the garden as I don't want rodents or rabbits to chew them. I have shortened lower branches a little bit to train them but wonder should I just leave them and let them sort out a natural leader themselves. In my time I have planted thousands of whips and have just let sort themselves out, but close planting before thinning helps shape them.
  16. The fine is likely to have taken into account the amount they saved carrying out illegal activity. A heads up that arborist is spelt wrongly on your website.
  17. Not clever to do these things, tomfoolery causes accidents.
  18. High jacking the post slightly as I take it removing the trees is not being requested. Root presence is often used as an issue to get rid of trees Variabilities are inevitable such as Specie and risk assessment i.e who uses and how often is the area used. If it were your tree and your block paving I think a top slice off the root (with permission if needed) and relay surface and forget about it for years would be what you would do; so why not explain this to the client. I recall on footpaths a slope construction to agreed specification, both sides, over the roots is acceptable to highways authority. We all manage to walk and drive over the speed controllers- sleeping policeman.
  19. Google for the Regs required and to proceed speak to a LA Reg officer. Saving pounds now could could stop sales in the future, and a change in circumstances is often sooner than you think.
  20. The Council will seek to recover all the costs they have incurred. I would suggest VAT has already been applied. Council charges will not only include for the tree staff and gear but it will include Solicitors fees for considering the matter and for preparing the notices to carry out the work; and we all know Solicitors do not come cheap. Often people will often say we will not pay but when told the charge will be placed on the property and that it could inhibit/slow a future sale the resistance normally subsides.
  21. First I would ask your GP or Surgeon office for info. After a hernia a couple of years back I found rehab and exercise info hard to come by as the NHS are so busy and cost conscious that often you are not interviewed later to get rehab advice. As on old sportsman keen to get back exercising I asked about on sports forums and the best advice I received was to visit a sports therapist. It cost £30 but was great. They will be sympathetic to someone keen to get back exercising and will suggest exercises/advice to rehab quickly. They are not on the GP treadmill of patients and will have come across the injury before.
  22. Once when I had no budget to add to a woodland project I asked a local woodland owner if I could trek his wood and dig out a few seedlings, holly, field maples and similar, even small stock to grow on. It helps if you offer to pick up any litter, add a few nest boxes, clear a problem; makes it a win for both parties.
  23. I would try and identify Ilex aquifolium `Golden Queen`which surprisingly is male. See and photograph it at your your local garden centre- then look for it locally. Often planted in gardens, parks. I feel sure a knock on a door with the ringworm story would gain you some. Homeopathy is difficult to prove or disprove either way but hey if it works go for it.
  24. I would vaseline all over the wounds and cling film them whilst you think about it ;that might be enough. Safety first is to re graft and or bridge graft.
