  1. Mmm. Identify the hazards and then cover them. Falling in, able to get out, know the tides. if you could be swept out to sea a boat might not be a bad idea.
  2. +1 for Ivoekids response. My advice to LA's in these situations is that you either have the tree or the house in that position-you cannot have both successfully-a compromise will not work the house will eventually win if approved there. So make the decision at approval and approve the felling of the tree even if it is protected; otherwise it is just embarrassing later (well it is now) and possibly eventually unsafe. A reasoned response to a felling decision will be more readily accepted and do less harm than the locals later long remembrance of the LA's ineptitude.
  3. +1 for Dalton's comment.
  4. Arbortrack would do what you want. Need to be computer savvy though; easy to underestimate the time for uploading all the information.I have no links with the company.
  5. We have an underused sixth sense. When we feel that something is too dangerous it is as well to heed it.
  6. Records are needed of ownership and previous condition for any authority to assess what has happened. The first hurdle will be to establish definite ownership of the hedge, if it is wholly their property it has been damaged and, if they have not already done so, it should be reported to the police as such i.e damage to property. It may only get a visit from the police sometime in the future. For damages financial loss has to be established and with a hedge which will grow again that might/will be difficult.
  7. Ask Mr Google. You should be able to get stock for cherry and crab apples, fruit rootstock is available from the national fruit collection at Brogdale. Subjects like Wisteria, Hamamellis, Willow, Rhododendron will be difficult. I imagine stock for Picea, Thuya could be grown from seed. I worked for a while in Boskoop, Holland and grafted. I am rusty now on the subject but lots of UK nurseries then would buy stock already grafted direct from Holland. Some of the nurseries over there specialised in rootstock production and still do, but mainly fruit and cherry. Some UK nurseries do that stock. From what I see in garden centres a lot of trees are still from abroad or bought from there and grown another year by UK nurseries. If you plan to do grafting you could get seed and grow your own stock, you will then have the issue of getting your own scion wood. Unless you are skilled and have nursery land it can be a massive waste of time and money that is why nurseries and centres prefer to buy in.
  8. Clients sometimes want what I call elastic trees i.e those that can be pulled down in the summer to stop shade but then pulled back up again in the winter to give shelter and screening.
  9. The RSPB site might have some ideas, you could adapt it to a Bee B n B e.g to accept bamboo lengths, hollow twigs and the like to increase the insect habitat.
  10. Re area orders, +1 for this- He actually states that you should not confirm as an area but should modify to groups and individuals before confirmation and confirm the new plan and schedule. To much wriggle room otherwise re tree numbers, genera, age and size.
  11. I have the Trees of Britain app for Android. With a TPO 's the trees position and name should be already clear and the owner should have a copy or you can request to see one; some are now online. I would hazard a guess that you will be unlucky to get something real unusual, the same ten or so Genera will keep cropping up.That said you need to become very observant re twigs, leaves, flowers, seeds, buds and bark.Take samples or photos or both and then to avoid embarrassment check with the app and Google.

I am going with F. angustifolia 'Raywoods Variety`
  13. Footballer. Plant explorer would be good. However I drifted into Horticulture and Arboriculture whilst training three years with a pro football club. If I knew what I know now about exercise I would have made it; 14lbs heavier and 2 inches taller would have helped.
  14. We know about working from height regs.I cogitated for long while a similar issue replacing some ridge tiles.First I thought about slinging from the chimney as previously described, second I asked a guy who talks about ladders and hauling up buckets of cement.Thirdly I met roofing contractor who describes proper job working from platform/scaffolding.Chose the latter and watched with cup of tea in hand. Expensive but what is it worth to be safe. Balancing on bread trays etc will likely negate any insurance you have; similarly contractors who get injured on your property carrying out balancing acts.
  15. Apologies if I have misread your description. My stock answer in root situations is `Neither me or you have X-ray eyes so we need evidence that roots are present and we have shrinkable clay on site. this requires somehow exposing a trench to intercept any roots. It is all conjecture without facts on roots, soil types, and construction We can only advise on what we are qualified in; which is often only trees; soil and engineering best left to experts in those fields. Advising outside your competence can be costly to you.
  16. These frequent rings/texts can be set off worries for no reason when something intervenes,no signal is the most common one. If no contact there is a little they can do but worry.Searching is best left to experts. Google Echo112 system, it's a smart phone app
  17. Log dog is right ,tis criminal damage to your property. Involve the Police. You wouldn't be thinking twice about it if they damaged your car.
  18. Sorry cannot do pictures yet, thanks to those who can.
  19. Why did you refuse a bat survey.
  20. Over on Facebookthese trees are shown to have been planted in the US. A guy from Syracuse Uni has chip grafted, probably means budded, many varieties on one tree. The different shades of blossom on the trees looks great.
  21. Err I know they are small but it is leaf miner not minor.
  22. Extending the wall would be good but big bucks. Planting any hedge roots close to the wall will eventually damage it. How about a larch lap fence addition just above the height of the wall ie 60mm,or more, on long posts.
  23. It is a life cycle issue.Early in the year wasps are valuable pollinators.
  24. Councils are pretty good at shuffling paper, anything sent to the CEO, Director of Planning for the TO will land on their desk, whether it will be filled in is another matter. There are usually deadlines for the answering of mail, though the answer may say a full reply will take....... It occurs to me whichever GVt dept is pushing reviews will be monitoring progress therefore your subject may be already being done. Mostly it will go like this; CEO asks for comment and likely timescale for a review of all TPOs. "Err Some of the woodland orders are 1947 and they are large. However at present there is no spare capacity but our best estimate is about two staff years i.e.2 extra staff and there will be the need for extra equipment." CEO "But there is moratorium on staff recruitment; Okay I will reply it is not possible under the present funding constraints." I note the UK tree officers list has no officers for Humberside CC not surprising since it was abolished in 1996.
  25. Forgot to mention, in any event I would check the TPO for accuracy. A group order should still have list of species, and these days to avoid challenges as much information about numbers, girths etc.
