  1. Why do anything. It is in lots of space. It is a young, vigorous tree and will be back to much the same height in no time at all. Pruning a tree once will not prevent it getting big, genetics and site characteristics control tree size.
  2. Thanks for the information, nice work.
  3. Elm,to confirm pull a strip of bark on twig ;it should run and run.
  4. Should be sufficient of have an inspection regime in place as long has they have records of when this is being undertaken. Not conceivable, and I feel a judge would agree, to fully inspect trees, e.g buttresses, to not only Council trees but private trees within falling distance of the highway. A Council policy to regularly remind tree owners to inspect their own trees is also necessary. Drive by or windscreen surveys are inevitable if you have many hundred of miles of highway to inspect. Regime to spot dead trres, overhanging limbs might be A roads every three months, B roads every year, C roads every 2 years, unclassified 5 years. Still a tall order to do but a priority as an accident through neglect can cost thousands even millions for a lifetime care claim, house redesign and refurbishment. TO's can be miss this as they get involved with minuteae and the inbox.
  5. I would hazard an opinion that the tree is far older than that style of house; the bad decision was made when the house was allowed so close to a mature tree. You are really buying a tree with a house. I would go further and say you will alienate the neighbourhood by removing the tree which will be expensive. In the street it could be some old dears pride and joy and the only big piece of greenery she sees. There is a fair chance that if the local council hear of it,from the neighbours, you might have a Tpo on it overnight if only to secure the situation for further investigation before the Tpo is confirmed.Might be bats in it, which would stop you. Big can of worms might be open here.
  6. My theory is that a flush happens when in Autumn day length and warmth happens to be the same as in the Spring so signalling a flowering.
  7. I think a personal visit to the US Consulate in London is part of the application process, was when I did it a long time ago.
  8. Notice of intended works to Natural England is required.
  9. Re Wikipedia. A minor point as your addition is good. I prefer changes to modified. I think modified is overused; to me it implies some thought whereas the cells are only reacting, e.g lengthening, shortening, to the stresses put upon them be it gravity, wind, fungal attack I find at times Shigo humanises tree growth giving it a thought process.. Might just be the use of language used describing wood but it gave me the wrong impression at times.
  10. +1 for Goat Willow
  11. Populus balsamifera and trichocarpa buds if rubbed have a clean sharp smell, bit wintergreeny, has been used to clear noses. Has microbial properties, used in perfumes and as a massage oil.Evidently bees use the Poplar resin to make propolis to line their hives to keep out bugs and mice.
  12. Your question would require a detailed reply and more information i.e for which country, soil type, present climate. If you haven't already have a look on Google for drought tolerant plants.
  13. The twin stemming hasn't helped leading to branch congestion, some contorting early on the get some light and now some being given up through shading.
  14. Needs careful attention as what is someones tangle of woodland is another persons (especially neighbours) magical habitat for flora and fauna. I would get the TO to visit and agree in writing a work programme. You could ask outright for the TPO to be reviewed. You need to match up your clients view of the future for the site and the LPA.s view of importance to the vicinity.
  15. Mmm, the unions wouldn't bother me. Classic case of putting bungalow under a large tree, I would hazard a guess that the roots were affected when that property was put in. A lack of good advice at the time methinks. I would take some weight off. Though I am sure it would help bracing acknowledges there is a fault in the tree. The safe option that close was the tree or the bungalow, not both. certainly needs regular inspection. Mind you if that was the case it would fall away from the bungalow, what is on the other side?
  16. Did you have a change of underpants in the van? Tree still had a mind of its own even when all dead.
  17. Your main issue will be the May planting. I learned that the earlier you plant the better. I aimed to plant before February. Root hair growth will occur above freezing so anything in the ground early starts growing and gets a head start. Yes, you can plant just about anytime but watering becomes essential later on. One of Sod's laws is that you get dry spell after late planting and near 100% losses can occur.
  18. Pruning is only a short term height fix as its size is governed by genetics and soil conditions.Pigeons will watch any pruning going on and be back in about half an hour. A guess but regrowth will be quick over a metre in a few years and branches will arm thick after ten years.
  19. The wound needs tidying up with a sharp knife, I have used vaseline with Road Traffic Accidentbark scrubs but cling film would do as well. Bridge grafts ,or any grafts are not easy, use a craft knife to get the sharpest cuts and joins. Having said that it will be less hassle just to buy a new tree mulch and don't strim.
  20. A charge on the land opinion may vary from LA to LA but I do not see why not, it is a debt under an Act that like any other that can be registered. My experience is that a likely charge on the property is often stated and that is usually sufficient for house owners to take action, especially when told of hassle at sale time as it will hold up a property conveyance until it is paid by them i.e before they receive the sale money. Once stated someone usually comes forth out of the mist if ownership is not clear. Similarly with a piece of land where ownership is unclear the LA can claim adverse possession which often has the same effect as above as land is money. However in these troubled times getting LA legal services to devote time to it will come down to priorities. Solicitors are pragmatic in my book and if it is going to cost say £150 to sort the tree against hours and thousands to establish ownership their advice will be to sort the tree and move on;there is enough legislation to sort out danger.
  21. I am proud to have some Celtic blood in me. If there was a Yes vote; to paraphrase- There is nothing like an England scorned. Industry likes stability and they will look at their position in Scotland very critically. Every new set up as teething problems and they will think 'Do we want to be part of that' Your average tourist, certainly early on, would have the mindset Mmm they don't really want us- so lets not go.Salmon is playing with fire.
  22. Excellent. It is a good job when you hardly see where you have been and maybe a third of it has gone.
  23. With success I used Vaseline on areas of bark scrubbed off in road traffic accidents. I consider it keeps cambium initials from drying out.Shrink wrap would work but if in highway urban areas it draws kids attention to it and they would fiddle with it. I have used vaseline on grafts with polythene wraps
  24. + for Norway Maple.Often worth rummaging around for whole dead leaf to help ID.
