  1. thanks jon, much appreciated mate. cant wait to see that bit of box elder as i've not had any before.
  2. just done a bit of that walnut that delabodge has asked for me to turn in to bowls and it looks great, a little bit of ripple included in this one and considering i only gave it one coat of oil it looks really nice. .
  3. to add to what alec says, just from a joinery point of view nails should be at least two thirds in the post/frame and one third through the ship lap.
  4. no... don't what are either are??? are they specific species that i've not heard of or just common names for a variety???
  5. found this on ebay. R Lot 11 (3 Pieces) Spalted Prunus Pear (measurements see description) | eBay is it a hybrid between cherry and pear????
  6. if someone walks around or approaches a tree that is falling or fallen then they needed removing from the gene pool anyway. the cops should not have let here get near i grant you but if you put yourself in harms way you are asking for it.
  7. would you be able to drop a few rings off in slough???
  8. too right i will, always look before you chop... what sort of sizes are those lumps mate. if they are big enough i may buy a pallet of it...
  9. i built a workshop with a concrete floor and realised i needed a layer between my beets and the concrete so i used old carpets from the house. work a treat..
  10. i wouldn't want to meet a mouse that has feet like those prints... they look like bear tracks:laugh1: nice work...
  11. lets stick to the logs...
  12. robinia glows really bright under blacklight .
  13. well i've got it to a real tight fit and finish sanded it and given the shaft a coat of danish. i may need to resin it as well as wedge it as the difference between the hole one side of the axe head to another is bigger than i would like. where can you buy quality wedges for this job then???
  14. i made mine a bit longer than the original to let physics do more of the work. what is the best way to fix it to the head??? i know you can get wedges but this one was resin bonded to the handle. do i re resin it or go for a tight fit and wedge the hell out of it? .
  15. right, after leaving the handle to dry out over the summer i've turned it in to something i'm really pleased with... pic to follow.
  16. and now we go through the keyhole...
  17. how about this one for a cheeky grin...
  18. depends on the quality of the tree really mate, stick up some pics of the grain and a location and you might get a few takers... a tree that size in yew should be milled, please do not let it get logged...
  19. brilliant picture, i want to see more...:thumbup:
  20. chop it in to little bits and leave till next winter...
  21. not played in a long time but have a table at home (not enough room to play) which sadly will be sold in the near future. at my brothers stag do whilst he was drumming in his live gig at a pub in wycombe i was on the pool table all night and only lost twice out of about 24-25 games. i'd forgotten how good i can be...
  22. not had the pleasure as yet but you need sharp tools... it's most likely better turned in to boards which is what i want to do.
  23. hi all can anyone help with the moving of a paulownia tree that has been brought to my attention in another thread. i'd need it taken from abbotts ann to slough, supposed to be 2.15m by 50cm diameter. can anyone help?
  24. yeah but my lathe's massive... never actually liked turning the stuff myself but each to their own. there will be one or two bits that would look good for the knots but the rest is for a very select market hence my suggestion for the fire. i should have stated that i was referring to milling logs to be 18"+
  25. not all joinery wood has to be dead straight and knotless... you can make some beautiful furniture from bits like that usually incorporating the natural flaws in to your designs.
