  1. if the wood inside is not soft then yes as it will look fantastic with the possibility of spalting... do not fire wood such a large tree...
  2. this is snakewood beau, Snakewood | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Hardwoods) the designation of lacewood is usually reserved for quartersawn plane tree.
  3. loving the bowls but can you put a pic of the stool underneath. that's a lovely bit of plane under there.
  4. delabodge may be interested. he's addicted to cedar...
  5. where did you download that from... link please.
  6. not all conifers are evergreen. as you suspect, they are softwoods that are deciduous.
  7. how long can sycamores live for???
  8. wont be big enough for that sucker then, 10' is 3m...
  9. am i turning that one in to bowls too clive?
  10. divide by PI buddy... one over 30' in circumference will be 9-10' diameter so i think you may have to do that free hand.
  11. technically they aren't cones on alders, they just look like them. not all evergreens are softwoods and not all hardwoods are deciduous. nature is a funny ol world...
  12. why not, everyone else does:001_tt2:
  13. by keys, i take it you mean seeds? i said there was no "major" threat... horses will die if eating it kills them and if it's always happened and we've only just found out the reason then it's no major threat to the species. that's what i meant... still plenty of horses about.
  14. out of the soft woods i've only burned yew and lawson's but both have great heat and the yew lasted a long time... all wood burns once dry.
  15. well said sir... anyone who has this problem could be accused of not feeding their horse enough of the right stuff so it goes to eat the wrong stuff. they've lived together for thousands of years so there is no major threat in my opinion.
  16. that would be criminal, come on somebody must be able to mill it?
  17. it's gone to a good home i hope. i really only wanted that 30"x35"x7" lump to make one large bowl. is there any chance i can have that bit? not often you get bits of good quality walnut that size, i'd hate to see it cut up. i should be able to get two from the middle too with my bowl saver...
  18. what happened to the rest of the tree??? there is only one bot of it's trunk there.
  19. it was only the fact that nepia is passing that i can take that bit anyway, could rob d have the next bit?
  20. oh... so i can't have it then? i was looking forward to making a huge bowl from that 30" bit too.
  21. would you settle for a nest of bowls from one of the 18" bits???
  22. if its on your way then that couldn't be better. cheers mate... john p, what do you want for the walnut?
  23. danish oil is one that needs to harden so extra heat will not do it quicker. 24 hours later it will be touch dry anyway but the longer you leave it between coats the better in my opinion...
  24. if i want to get a decent shine on some of my bowls sand the first coat back with 380-400 buff it with cotton and apply another coat. personally i would leave as long as you can between coats, when i did my side table for college i had the luxury of leaving it 7 days between coats. it had 3 coats in the end.
  25. if there is a half decent heart then yes it's worth milling. by "worth it" i mean if you want to get some nice wood out of it. it won't be worth a fortune.
