  1. well said sir... anyone who has this problem could be accused of not feeding their horse enough of the right stuff so it goes to eat the wrong stuff. they've lived together for thousands of years so there is no major threat in my opinion.
  2. that would be criminal, come on somebody must be able to mill it?
  3. it's gone to a good home i hope. i really only wanted that 30"x35"x7" lump to make one large bowl. is there any chance i can have that bit? not often you get bits of good quality walnut that size, i'd hate to see it cut up. i should be able to get two from the middle too with my bowl saver...
  4. what happened to the rest of the tree??? there is only one bot of it's trunk there.
  5. it was only the fact that nepia is passing that i can take that bit anyway, could rob d have the next bit?
  6. oh... so i can't have it then? i was looking forward to making a huge bowl from that 30" bit too.
  7. would you settle for a nest of bowls from one of the 18" bits???
  8. if its on your way then that couldn't be better. cheers mate... john p, what do you want for the walnut?
  9. danish oil is one that needs to harden so extra heat will not do it quicker. 24 hours later it will be touch dry anyway but the longer you leave it between coats the better in my opinion...
  10. if i want to get a decent shine on some of my bowls sand the first coat back with 380-400 buff it with cotton and apply another coat. personally i would leave as long as you can between coats, when i did my side table for college i had the luxury of leaving it 7 days between coats. it had 3 coats in the end.
  11. if there is a half decent heart then yes it's worth milling. by "worth it" i mean if you want to get some nice wood out of it. it won't be worth a fortune.
  12. i will keep em coming but this thread is for others too, come on , i want to see more bowls.
  13. don't you dare.... give me some sizes please. i'll see if i can arrange a pallet.
  14. just been milling some really nice field maple with delabodge and slackbladder. it's stunning stuff and i'm glad it's been saved from the log pile. thanks to nepia for offering it to me and thanks to delabodge for letting us use his facilities. just wish i'd taken more pictures... you'l have to take my word for it that every single board had figure in it of some description. the last three pics are of some box elder that nepia got me too. cheers jon. .
  15. what sizes you after?
  16. now they look like this. .
  17. this walnut from clive is top notch stuff... the first nest completed. they started out like this, .
  18. i'm interested but am too far away. get it to a woodturner. it should come out like this, http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/woodcraft-forum/65439-bowl-turning-thread-37.html
  19. finished the larger of those cedar bowls too. .
  20. not a bowl but i've just made my first urn. .
  21. finished the inside of that walnut and you can really see the ripple stand out.
  22. whoops, wrong name. sorry... this is his user id. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/members/aspenarb.html here is his website. Tree Felling & Hedge Cutting in Guildford - Aspen Arboricultural
  23. that tree should not be wasted. if it can stay standing then try that but if it must come down then make sure it's milled. arbscape might be interested, he's just bought his own mizer and may want it.
  24. my understanding is that they've tried to work out just how it happens and as far as i know they are no closer to working it out as it seems to happen in all conditions with all sorts of factors involved. they still don't know how maple gets that birdseye figure. wood is a natural product and it seems to be luck of the drawer. you do get patches under branches so it's got to be some sort of compression but there is no definitive answer.
  25. i'll create more than that with the bowls i've yet to turn. in the loft i have about 150 for savil gardens, 30-40 of my own personal wood and the 101 i got from the walnut tree clive cut up.
