  1. it all comes with trial and the inevitable error... some timbers i've found just don't need sealing at all like catalpa, tuliptree, small bits of walnut under 10", most acer species, sweet chestnut and planetree.
  2. sounds great chaps, i've never had sumac before and always look forward to working with a new wood...
  3. with the fruit woods and others prone to splitting i will always seal the endgrain once roughed out as this will give you the best chance of having a good yield of bowls once dry...
  4. damn it, why are these woods never closer to me... if you are passing slough i'd be interested... if still in good nick i's offer £30 plus a bowl...
  5. are you sealing the endgrain or leaving it?
  6. it varies with the wood a bit, i'll leave 1/2" on little ones and go up to 1" for something 12" across and up to 1 1/2" at 18"
  7. how thick are you leaving it? this one is only a tiddler (4 1/2") so perhaps that helped. it was a core from a larger bowl that i bough inside the house to see how much weight it lost so i could judge when the rest were dry. i left it next to the fire to force dry it, there was no pith so i was happy that it would be ok. i've had good experiences with all the cherry species...
  8. next is a wild pear, walnut and lastly a 4 1/2" plum which only weighs 45g. .
  9. not done too much recently as they are still in the finishing processes but got a few small bowls. firs is that smokebush that phil71 gave me. next is strawberry tree. .
  10. is that a T4? i've got one of them but never really got round to using it though, reckon the time will come when it will come in handy though. if you are getting vibes from your other routers then they have a balance problem mate. i have the large dw625e and can leave it on full power and let go with no vibration at all.
  11. well said... you can always get other sized collet's for the 1/2" ones.
  12. i've lots of sycamore if you are interested?
  13. they are perfectly available just ridiculously expensive. i have a dewalt router and think they are the bees knees. think mine is the dw625ek.
  14. try a dozen coats of danish oil or perhaps you could buy a tin of osmo and put a couple of coats on it. i wouldn't worry about the colour as the sun will blend them in in about 12 months.
  15. nice looking stuff there, get those ends pva'd with a couple of coats and restack the pile in the shade.
  16. right, i've come to the conclusion that i'm addicted to taking pics of this spectacular timber but i don't care... i've started to finish this beautiful platter that is about 19 1/2" x 1 3/4". the first coat of danish has gone on the back and its started to really bring out the colour. i'm going to try to build up a few layers and buff it to a high sheen. the figure is extra amazing in one corner as that is part of a crotch. .
  17. i must say turtlewoods that i've been very impressed with this "cheap saw" and in 5-6 years it's the first trouble i've had. i will try all that has been suggested (if i can do it) and if i need help i know where to ask. just on the off chance, is there anyone local who could pop in and show me a few maintenance tips???
  18. as delabodge says, details are required mate. what sizes, how many, what is the end use, rough sawn or planed/sanded and what species would you want???
  19. i have to say that although it is impressive i think that going by the size of the wheelie bin (which is further away) i think that it's a child or very small woman standing there. 15' tall???
  20. hi all my ryobi saw wont start and i'm afraid i don't know too much about engines so don't know how to diagnose whats wrong. i dusted off the air filter and cleaned the spark plug as it was a bit sooty. will the plug need replacing? it's not even sounding like it's going to start and would like some help. thanks in advance. ps it's been fine so far.
  21. how are they going to take it home if they buy it then???
  22. good to see there are a few companies still using 4" blades. i think stenner will make what the customer wants but you pay for it...
  23. found this on ebay, looks the business... Mobile Sawmill | eBay all mills should be able to fit 5' then non would go to waste because there are no mills with that capacity.
  24. what in the blazes is this doing in the firewood forum??? it should be milled if its a good log. phone stiles and bates and they may buy it...
  25. can someone find me a few grand please...
