  1. that angle grinder looks lethal... try buying one of these to do wide boards... it's a wadkin RK 50" thicknesser:drool:
  2. don't see anything wrong with that mate, just make sure you get the fire very hot before you put oak on. i find that once its up to temp it goes great guns...
  3. how does that work then???
  4. as long as its free i'm not bothered. big j, i've heard that dead oaks can sometimes have the calorific value reduced because of early fungal development. not sure if its true or not but it could account for that specific tree.
  5. sounds like your planer was either blunt bladed or perhaps you were going against the grain? using one is really just to remove high points like i did with this table top. all boards had cupped by 1/4" and using the electric hand plane and eventually the belt sander with 100 -180 belts got it almost dead flat. they are 2x 12" boards sandwiching a 14" one.
  6. here's one wilson PAK 12" x 7" planer thicknesser single phase | eBay
  7. Peat, check out ebay for a 240v one and you should have some joy.
  8. as a cabinet make you should be aware of what the most popular sizes you used were. alot of money depends on the quality of the wood how well it was processed and how well it's dried. top quality stuff you will be looking at £80ft3 and lower range £50
  9. if they need raised areas removing then use an electric hand planer then go over it with 100 grit and refine.
  10. mine arrived at 4am i deleted it immediately.
  11. why stain or lacquer a rosewood???
  12. don't be so modest mate, you are a wealth of knowledge on the whole and are always glad to help if you can. the world needs more fellas like you.
  13. get big j on the phone mate, he's the man when it comes to this subject.
  14. have heard of it happening but had no problem as yet. i believe the magnetising comes from repeatedly passing or scraping of the tool and the magnet so i try to "pick" the tool off rather than slide them.
  15. for flat tools like skews and scrapers i use a couple of chef's 24" magnetic knife racks . for all others i use a board with about 20 holes in it screwed to the wall so i can see what tool is on the other end. i've got to know my handles as they are all slightly different. you could number your handles? i'll take a pic asap.
  16. dan, that £1800 is a real bargain mate, it costs £2579 now. i bought mine new when they were a bit cheaper plus loads of extras for a deal price which included 3 chucks bowl jaws and a few other bits, still cost me £2400 though. pity you've not got room as it's a beauty.
  17. this one just popped up on ebay. Jet 3520B Heavy Duty Wood Lathe | eBay i've one myself and it's great.
  18. dalbergia sissoo is the wood in question here and will fade badly if put in the sun. i don't know what restoration techniques would bring it back but presuming it is solid timber sanding it would do the job fine. if you decide to put it back out in the sun the finish it with the strongest UV inhibitor you can find.
  19. these should all be vee belts so no teeth to wear away.
  20. probably, i just looked up an add on gumtree that was selling one and it came with both sizes so said 4' max. belts should be rubber. i've never had to replace one yet but i don't think any of mine have been plastic.
  21. that lathe should only be 4' max i think. why are you going through belts???
  22. dan, don't waste £300 on a brand new lathe when you can learn all you need to on a cheap one. Woodturning lathe | eBay RECORD CORONET NO 3 WOOD TURNING LATHE - WITH STAND. 5 day listing. | eBay Record DML 24x woodturning lathe | eBay Record Power DML36SH woodturning lathe plus tools | eBay here are a few suggestions you could buy. once you have realised your skill level and what you enjoy doing most then buy a lathe that is 300-500 that caters for those requirements...
  23. becoming a lost skill, we need more people like her..
  24. never sen it so don't know. put a picture up would you please. i may be interested in some if there is any going spare?
  25. are these of any use? they are on the fire pile. roughly 6 x 10" x 1/4". might get more from my offcuts as i'll be milling some oak in the near future.
