  1. no one mentioned cedar mate (except yourself) and i didn't think cedar was in any way toxic. i notice you spelled it lebenum when i believe it's spelled lebanon. it's no relation to laburnum.
  2. i'm a great believer in leaving the wood as nature intended so i won't fill a hole if i see it, however i did fill the exposed pith on part of the base as it created a long channel that look very unsightly. all the platters have warped but i'm happy to say that this was the worst looking bit regarding warp and obviously the split pith. that's why i turned it as i thought if this bit can be turned then the rest should be fine. i've made a note to rough turn it slightly thicker next time as parts of it are only 3/8"-1/4" thick and on a platter 22" wide it can be worrying if it starts to vibrate... the rest are a bit bigger so i hope they aren't too thin eventually.
  3. just an update on the handles performance. i've put it through it's paces and i've been given no trouble whatsoever. it's kept outside and just brushes off any weather conditions as well as holding up to the shock of plenty of high speed impacts and not giving me any probs when i embed the axe in the wood and swing axe and lump up and over to use the back of the axe as an impact point letting the weight of the lump split it's self. use robinia as it's great stuff...

  5. vegetable oil is a good all round safe one for food.
  6. just started to turn some of that gorgeous walnut from delabodge and its stunning... just one coat of danish on the outside so far. i'm going to try to build up layers to give it a proper sheen... .
  7. nice one mate, for me that's got to be the way forward. i know it's more work but i think it looks loads better than just screwing them on the base.
  8. i had a bit of mahonia given to me recently and the bark looks nothing like the picture so i don't think it's a mahonia. acacia has a rancid smell and a 1/2" of white sapwood so would be easily identifiable. here is what mahonia bark looks like.

  11. googleing red berries i think it may be a sweetbay magnolia, (magnolia virginiana)
  12. rough saw it in to the sizes you require then seal the ends and leave it in the workshop for a year. next year you can do what you like with it...

  14. i've been burning true cedar (cedrus) here and find it to be and excellent firewood. burns hot and doesn't leave much ash... i can put it on at night for shutdown and it's still smoldering in the morning... needs to be good and dry...
  15. i don't know about anyone else but green timber to me is worth 10-15 quid ft3. seasoned i can get wide boards for £38ft3. the board you describe is 6ft3 so i would say that seasoned (if you can sit on it for 3 years) it should sell for £240 possibly more. just as green wood i'd say £90. i should point out that i think there should be a premium for such a wide board as it took alot of effort to cut, perhaps some other milers could help you with that.

  18. although i cook for myself every night i don't have much variation in my diet. all i cook are cheese on toast. scrambled eggs with ham and cheese in sandwiches. the occasional toasted cheese sandwich. a cooked sandwich which comprises (bottom to top) of bread, cheese, ham, cheese, ham, cheese, bread, cheese, ham, cheese, ham, cheese, bread all warmed up under the grill... i can also order pizza or go to maccy dees.
  19. i know a guy who is a chef looking for a good woman. i'm no chef and hadn't cooked these little things for years but don't know why i don't cook them weekly. they are bloody gorgeous... i made a test batch first to see if i could still get it right and i'm just polishing that off now. the next lot are for my nan's guests and will cook up another batch or two tomorrow.

  21. it's my nan's 90th at the weekend so i'm making some flapjacks for the party (and myself) just wondered if anyone has a dish they cook on the odd occasion?

  23. trees like that should never be firewood... Sweet Chestnut | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Hardwoods) never used it myself but a perfectly good wood.

  25. where is it, what size is it and when was it cut? i turned a bit that nepia gave me and it's fabulous stuff to turn. if i can get it somehow then yes i'm interested.
