    Aldi saw

I spotted the saw that is on sale this Thursday in Aldi's 'offers coming up leaflet', and could not believe there was no a mention of the need for PPE, training etc, to use a chainsaw safely, or an age limit on purchase. I bet they have not got PPE on sale with the saw. Not sure how they get away with it! Can anyone go in and buy one, ie a kid?
  2. Sounds like a bargain! thought I'd done ok at £30
  3. We have a Jappa and send the blade to a company in Newcastle, that returns by post and the whole thing costs £30 (inc vat), much cheaper than a new blade, or driving each way twice. the company is 'Precision saw and tool ltd' and number is 0191 4990033
  4. We were asked to produce a report recently for a court case, and discovered on internet that a good amount of work experience in industry is another perfectly qualification to carry this out. No amount of qualifications/letters after name can replace valuable life learned expereince dealing with trees on a daily basis, something that is often blatently obvious when clients give us reports and surveys done for them by qualified people who cannot even correctly identify trees!! or spot obvious defects etc.( reports that cost a lot of money to have done) so I would advise qualifications and experience every time
  5. Hi, yes, a happy ending for us but it took a bot of time. the house had been built 2-3 years before we bought it for a farmers son, hence the 'Agricultural tie', and the farm went bankcrupt and house re-possessed. We bought it from the people handling the insolvency. The solicitor is one that advertises in the farmers weekly every week, and specialises in Agricultural Tie removal, that is all they have done for years, so know all there is to know. Cost us 2-3K but put so much on value of house to get it lifted was well worth it. By the way, I had had a nursery (growing trees, and had grew some christmas trees,) but I think it was a 5 year uncontested period of time that enabled us to get the tie lifted and that was after nursery closed etc.
  6. We have serious bad skin reactions to conifer sap when felling, and have to keep arms well covered, (more needles than sap I think) although never a problem when processing dry stuff on a processer and we do a lot!
  7. This is something we had to deal with, around 2003. Had bought house with a tie, about 12 years previously, as the estate agents presumed as tree surgeons we complied with the agricultural restriction as it came under 'forestry'. 10 years later we got the tie lifted through court (can give you solicitors details), as Tree surgery does NOT comply with an agricultural tie restriction,( you can operate out of an industrial unit and do not need land etc.)This had previously been decided by a court of law and was the legal ground our solicitor used for our tie to be lifted -( we had lived in the house for the required period of time without complying and it had not been contested.) It is 'Forestry', not tree surgery that complies. It cost us a few £1,000 but house was worth a huge amount more once tie got lifted. Hope this helps
  8. Nice dog,(& stacked Logs) our dog does this too! (sleeps in the sawdust), found her in an empty dumpy bag in a log shed the other day asleep, she had woken up and could not find the way out!
  9. I agree with this post, would have suggested the same...
  10. Sounds idylic but Lone chainsaw /forestry work is not a great idea, insurance would be invalid if an accident occured. From our experience of working in France H & S was almost non existant, even though employed by a uk based company.
  11. Discovered a green waste centre takes clean chip for free near Gateshead,
  12. I heard that too, I thought who wants to swap my day, working in a midge infested swampy bit of forest in the rain for 8 hours, (was one of the 'Bad Days') !! Generally I love my work, I think maybe they are right!
  13. I bought some red trousers and have never worn them as they feel so 'bright'

    Women Drivers.

Just sticking up for my gender here, I can back my truck and trailer through any narrow gap, around any twisty obsticle ridden driveway, often to applause (why does it suprise people that a woman can actually do that?) and have never hit another vehicle parking. Anyone can be a bad parker! my opinion is that if someone is told they cant do something well, ie, 'a women cant park as well as a bloke', then they dont have the confidence and cant do it.
  15. Had the carpel tunnel op.14th March 2011, was delivering logs and working with a saw again by 11th April, but not 100% for a couple of months, now the hand is as strong as before, dont think the work did any harm once stitches out. Never any problems now at all. I'd just had the carpel tunnel op, in the Avatar photo on left, (Forest Head' at Kielder), I had a large bandage on the right hand, walking was the only thing I could do!
  16. Agree with last post (tom 10) hope you get that break,
  17. Yes, we buy hardwood off Ross, have a look on web site or facebook page to see what we get up to (warkforestlandscapes), if you are local Tim & I are in a 'Hexham courant' suppliment soon (could be a rubbish article!) and we had 2 pages in May forest Journal with stuff about our business history. Do you have certificates? will bear your offer in mind if we need extra help! Welcome to Arb talk by the way..

  18. Yes, we have been seeing this every where, in Northumberland, looking on forum to see if others have noticed this problem. Drove to coast yesterday to price work, and every single cherry tree looked like your photo, all up A69/A1 and through towns etc, young old, roadside and gardens. Worked on a large cherry in Hexham recently and it was the same. Cannot identify any reason, thought it was to do with late frost.
  19. Try the christmas tree growers association...
  20. We use a company called Swintons, based in newcastle, cheapest quotes for truck, chipper and forwarding trailer (and car!), around around £400(£380) fully comp for a Mitsubishi 4 work. No one else came any where near them for prices on anything we had to insure, most were over £1000. for the truck.
  21. Hid indoors when I heard thunder this morning, got caught out last Thursday in it and was totally flooded at home later that evening, plan to be out tomorrow!
  22. Not raining now but very grey and misty, Looks like it could be dry enough to finish work on a site in kielder tomorrow (clearing sitka regen), we did not go out today when all we could hear at 8am was thunder! I am sick of permantly being a drowned rat with soggy boots. think it is north east northumberland that is getting the heavy rain at the moment (Berwick), hope no one has problems caused by flooding up there tonight.
  23. Just found this thread, spent some time looking on internet, to find what PPE was sold in hot climates. Did not find anything! ( do they bother?). I did find an American site that had a big thing about 'snake protection chaps & boots', and some sort of vest with ice in to wear to keep cool! Not too sure those vents would be a good idea in Kielder with the midges around, fed up with 'cooking' in a pair of Sthill Highflex every time temperatures get into high 20's.
  24. Yes that sounds about right!
  25. We thought it was Johny H. What did he do??
