  1. Wark Forest Landscapes | Tree Surgery Hexham/Tree Surgeon/Firewood Logs/Firewood/Tree Surgeons Northumberland/Tree Work/Tree Pruning will get you there! I have the search engines set to go for the firewood sales, we have plenty of TW, I am about to change some stuff, but have not got round to it yet...
  2. Most of my log deliveries are around 20-25 miles, I've got an excuse to turn down the farthest enquiries away now, no tacho in truck!
  3. I have one of the unitel sites, for over 2 years, they 'cold called' me and then I got very cold feet! but the site is good, gets on google 1st page every time (mostly top of page!)and I liked the site they built me, get lots of work and sells firewood and they are not expensive. Had A yell site previously and it was a waste of time, I was not even on 1st 12 pages! and did not even own the site (it remains thier property, had a fight to get my money back!). Was very sceptical, but they did do what they said, no regrets!
  4. We have the largest 'Arrow' stove, is very efficient and heats 23 rads, shuts down and ticks over for up to 8-10hrs on seasoned S/S, H/W even better, so house is warm when you come home and get up. We have no other heat source. Only draw back is its not really a brilliant room heater, if you have rads, a lot of heat goes into the system, but if you want to heat the whole house on wood it is 1st class. Clearview are really good, a lot of my firewood cutomers have them and they seem economical with wood and work well. Get the best you can afford
  5. Stretch air come up biggerr in size than Hi flex
  6. Hi Natalie

    Just introducing mysely

Is it 'northumberland firewood' that you are running? I am down in N tyne and run a firewood business, out of Wark forest, putting out around 300 tonnes per year at the moment, most of it is bought in as we dont get much from tree surgery arisings, although we have some felling work lined up for early next year up near Alnwick. I bought 50 tonnes good hardwood thinnings from 'hardwood logger' early this year, he is a nice guy, based at Wallington.

I love the Firewood business, but also really love the tree surgery and the work we do for FC, eg brashing/spraying etc, just like working out in the wilds basically! Tim & I have run a tree surgery / firewood business for over 25 years, used to be a big deal, but moved up here 8 years ago and scaled right down, funny that we actually make a better living on our own. I have a girl who does part time now, logs and groundwork,

Anyway, hope to hear from you sometime Steph

  7. Hi Matt

have seen the latest on thread, and everything seems ok

just spent 3 hrs doing a survey on school woods near Brampton, got 110 trees on the list for felling/pruning! rain held off until we got back towards home, so paper did not get soggy...

  8. Neither can anyone I've spoken to, the web site is really useless...
  9. Thanks, I've found the other threads! still very confused
  10. Can anyone shed light on proposed changes to law regarding tachographs and licencing for vehicles / trailers chippers etc over 3.5 tonnes which are to be enforced from 4th December??
  11. Its easy to be busy, and earn nothing, many of us have learned that lesson. Overheads are always more than you think, and unplanned situations arise! You learn by experience how long /how much labour is needed. Can still get it wrong after 26 years, dont be afraid to quote prices that cover your costs, dont forget you may not have work everyday if you are just starting out, or be ill/bad weather etc. Enjoy your work!
  12. I'm suprised you got a face to face complaint, normally they just never order again if something is not to 'the standard they expect'! You cant please everyone, just do your best, there are some very fussy people out there who are very hard to please! We always ask a new customer what size log they prefer, but as all logs are around 8-10", its just to check they will go on the stove, would love to have storage for different sizes, but will cut to order when we have seasoned cordwood in yard.
  13. Just noticed you are in the far north! (we are north) Prices are better near cities and further south, which is depressing as I think we pay the same price for fuel/haulage and timber? down south I ordered firewood for my Mum who's just moved, checked out internet prices and had to pay £80m for softwood,(there is no way I could ever ask that roound here.) Hardwood was around £110 m, and when I saw it, not even well seasoned.
  14. We have ads in local paper all year round, only small as it gets more sales than large boxed ad? Web site gets good sales, and is how more people are buying everything nowadays, Local shops, parish mags, all only cost a few quid and get good sales in some areas, it depends what competition there is.
  15. Public are strange, we changed from a 'boxed ' ad to a line ad last year and sales went up, they think the logs may be cheaper? Agree with comment on our web site, they can see price and want to order, also can email which means they avoid the answer phone. After years of selling firewood, the customer is wising up, and is more educated about buying dry firewood, so they like the chat about how you 'season' it etc, but still the hardcore minority of 'dont care as long as its cheap', thankfully they are getting fewer. Lost an order last night, £75 for 1.5m3 was too expensive!!! I cant remember the last customer who didnt order once they got prices etc.
  16. Entered a competition at the Firewood auction held near Morpeth last month to guess the number of logs in the bag (1m3), I didnt win, but was very close, 3 out, I think the answer was around 245. I have counted 360 logs approx. in a 1.5m load and just based my answer on that.
  17. Fc sell me cord at 20%, and call it 'firewood' on the invoice, I sell on at 5%, I've never managed to find anyone who has been sold it at 5%, which office have they dealt with? (I know I'm not the end user, but they have never even asked ).
  18. Hetas sounds good if you have a lot of wood boiler customers who will need to buy Hetas assured firewood for the 'feed in tarriff scheme', but I dont think that it is definate that they will have to buy Hetas assured firewood yet, so dont bother unless it's neccessary , Hetas have reduced rates for small producers right now, but I'm not convinced there is any benefit to joining the scheme, its a lot of money and paperwork etc, at the end of the day, firewood is a 'local' product and people soon find out who is selling the best logs and spread the word
  19. Around 27-45 m3 per week (loads are 1.5m, so up to 30 per week), really busy since Sept 1st, but gone quiet this week! so busy with the processor for a few days on some nice dry stuff to re-fill barns.
  20. Your Accountant is definately wrong! look at vat leaflet 701/19, which sets out that timber sold as firewood eg: logs is sold at a reduced rate of 5%. Also it looks as if roundwood timber only suitable for firewood, can be sold at 5%, although I have not found anyone yet who does.
  21. You seem to be the only other person looking at posts in this group, where are you based?
