I have yet to strip it as I need to finish two others off first, but I think your diagnosis is bang on, it has that tinny tapping noise- only thing that surprises me is that it looks like it hasn't done much work at all? soon find out and let you know.- waiting for my new compression tester to come so will give it a try before stripping. cheers M

  3. You do know what a hawthorn looks like, this isn't one. Its a species of thorn cockspur would be my guess.
  4. As little as possible! 1300 isn't mega hours- have you seen any service history? flywheel bearings are popular for issues but if they have recently been changed. you need to have someone who knows what they are looking at- chippers can have allsorts of issues, wiring, stress control, stress fractures in metal, bearings, hydraulics- don't jump into anything without proper inspection would be my advice.

  6. 1, No- rot could be caused by the tree being stressed and more susceptible to any fungi- from the picture there is previous damage to the lower stem which is an entry point 2, yes- The fine roots are buried stopping gaseous exchange and there will be a change in the water table and drainage patterns from altering soil levels -not to mention mechanical root damage. 7. Thanks Spud, Youre a gent. Now just give me a brief technical conclusion of how piston slap enables the loss of power to stop the chain if you would. What happens inside the saw? Does the clutch slip from loss of power/friction to the clutch?
  8. Ive been given an ms 260 that looks like its had not much use, it runs but sounds a bit tappity, when in the cut a slight bit of pressure stops the chain. I had stripped the clutch side and all looks well, took the exhust off and no scoring but looks a bit cruded up with wet dirty oil, going to take the cylinder off tonight for further inspection, any ideas guys?

  21. Thank you for the info, I know the nearest stockist.
  22. Please enlighten me about the removable elastic gaiters bit? Do these have the hook that clips on to your boots, to stop em riding up your leg when your climbing through a hedge? They look good, got to be more cost effective than the longevity of the hiflex.

  25. Hi, The NPTC units you are hearing about are Certificates of competence for using chainsaws and carrying out arboricultural task, eg, felling, dismantling, ariel rescue, using chipper /stump grinder etc. These show that you have been properly taught how to work safely and to best practices. I am not sure but I would guess the level 4 qualification you hold is more an academic qualification equivalent to the English level 4 Certificate in arboriculture which will cover a wider range of subjects in arb/forestry. Here is a link that I have been looking at today, it may or may not be any use to you but it was useful to me as our qualification framework has recently changed and I find it a bit confusing. Comparing qualifications levels - Ofqual regards Matt
