  1. Hey all, Need your help once again - I've tried looking everywhere for an answer for this but have had no luck. Seeing as I've only just begun, hardly cross cut and not felled a tree yet, I'm calling upon your fantastic knowledge/experience. I'm being asked to "describe the different properties in relation to the way the timber behaves when stressed/being cut". Could you help me out on Sycamore, Larch, Lime, Ash and Western Red Cedar Always grateful
  2. just wanted to say thanks for the tips! I've only just come across this trying to work out the difference between Leylandii and Lawson for my tree ident. Thanks guys
  3. Hi, Been accepted to do a Level 2 Timber & Trees course with HCT College in Hereford on the condition of having an employer. I currently have no experience with working in this area but enjoy working outdoors, hard working, punctual, dedicated and ready to learn. Funding has been approved to cover costs of tickets and course related fees. I'm 28 living in Cardiff so ideally looking for an employer in the South Wales region. My course requires me to experience all aspects such as planting, establishment & maintenance work. I am actively seeking employment but thought I would try on here and see if anyone would be interested. Many thanks Kate
  4. Hi All, Out of curiosity - how did you get in to this job? Was it through a complete change of career, family ties, always had the passion, chance...?! I'm planning a complete career change and have no experience in this field - so just curious to see how many were in a similar situation when you began. As I'm feeling a little nervous! Thanks
  5. Hi All, thanks for all your comments - I've been a bit slack with the site but back on it. Thanks again for all your help - still on the hunt
  6. Hi all, I've got a conditional place at the Hereford College of Technology but need to find an employer that would be willing to take me on. Starting July or September ideally. I'm 27, female (!), hard working and practical minded. I have no previous experience but am willing to learn as I want a career change. I love being outdoors and the environment and can't wait to get started in this sector. I know it's going to be hard work, will be out in ALL weather and will have to work from the bottom up. The course is Forestry & Arboriculture but can include Urban Forestry:- "In order to fund you through the programme, i.e. all your training and certification costs we are proposing to use Forestry Commission funding provided through their Skills Initiative Fund. In order to qualify for this, you need to have an employer that is either engaged in General Forestry and Woodland Work but this could also include Urban Forestry. In essence this means that you could be employed by a Tree Surgery Company but they would need to guarantee you some work in planting, establishment and maintenance work activities. Realistically this means that you might be able to stay more local to Cardiff rather than long-distance commuting or lodging away." I've contacted a couple of places that the college recommended but no luck as yet. I've also contacted the Forestry Commission but no luck there either - there's a merger happening in April so may try again for that. Does anyone have advice or know of anyone that would be willing to train me up. I have a CV already to send. I would love the get the opportunity to be a climber but also interested in the science and environmental side - well until I find what path within this industry suits me. Also any experience with this college?! I know how helpful you all are so I look forward to hearing any advice, good news or not. Cheers
