  1. My big critisism of the L6 is that the learning outcomes are too narrow in definition. A good example is in the arb health unit you are asked to work in depth on 1 specified disease. I feel this is too focused. The old pro dip had such a broad scope of species you could be examined on where as ABC only stipulates 1. I know that the learnng proceedure can be applied to any disease but why only specify 1? Another bad example is in the selection and planting unit you are asked to prove identification skills for 100 trees. As the student cannot be tested on their knowledge the enphasis falls on providing evidence. How do you do this??? I ended up writing a mini field guide with seasonal photos of all parts of my trees and countless spread sheets of attributes etc to prove my knowledge. I guess it eliminates ident tests but it was a task that took a whole year to achieve. How did you Treelife boys deal with that 1? On the whole, it was a very good course that I am happy to have achieved. I have even been invited to grad/awards day but god knows what sort of monkey suit they expect me to turn up in?
  2. The greatest thing that I have to take from the L6 is my portfolio. A passed portfolio gives the learner a wonderful template on which to build a career in arb/forestry consultancy or management. One has learned how to produce documents, applications, appeals, strategies, management plans and so much more in a professional and legal format that encourages best practice. Like every thing else in life once one has learned how to apply and master techniques they are skills for life. Those reference points are there in your portfolio as a constant reminder as to how things should be done. Well, that is until some bright spark decides to change things again!
  3. My understanding is that the course was set up to run for 5 years. After this date it is up for review and updating if needed. Those who enrolled on day 1 therefore could have up to 5 years to complete. As the course is now in year 4 those who enrolled this year will only have 2 years to complete. Quite what the implication will be next year when only 1 year remains I do not know?
  4. Does anyone know what the pass rate is from Treelife? How many have gained the diploma? At MM my solo pass gives them about a 10% pass rate. Pretty piss poor in my mind!
  5. From what I understand you Treelife lads had things good in comparrison to us lot at Moreton Morrell. At least you had scenarios set and regular marking with model answers to meet. I had to physically go out to find about 95% of my scenarios as none were set in class and no deadlines were set to submit work by. I had to complete each unit and hand the lot in together for marking. It could take 6 weeks to get marked work back but I was grateful that I didn't have much to correct. When I had finished all learning outcomes MM applied for my diploma but I had to wait 9 months because no EV had taken place during the 2 years of my study. I am the only student evwr to gain the qualification from MM and would advise any potential students to go to Treelife. MM is POOR, POOR, POOR!!!
  6. Personally I feel that all of these issues should have been raised and clarified before the qualification was offered to colleges to teach. It is the learners who pay for their education and devote the almost uncountable hours into completing their portfolios. Learners should feel proud of their achievement and hold diplomas of value. We should not be facing these uncertainties 3 years after the qualification started, it is making a mockery of all our hard endeavors.
  7. 2. I spoke to the RFS as they have updated their website and no longer make reference to the L6 qualification. The reason they gave for this is that Pro Dip was a RFS course, the ABC version is not. It seems that people who have the ABC qualification are claiming it is the RFS qualification. The RFS acknowledge that the ABC course is part of the QCF and therefore legitimate. Their logo appears on the diploma for now but they state that they are in discussion with ABC and state that they are free to remove their endorsement from the qualification at any point that they choose.
  8. I have made some phone calls today and have the following new information. 1. C.I.F. The old style Pro Dip Arb carried 7 points towards professional chartered status. Initially with the change to ABC a rough calculation was made on its value and 4 points were allocated. Recently they made a request to ABC for more info on hours needed and levels each unit carries and made a new calculation which only gives 3 points. Treelife have complained about this down grading and the CIF are making more investigations. For now anyone who has achieved the qualification or is currently studying will receive 4 points. Any one joining in the future will get only 3 unless appeals over turn this decission.
  9. From talking to the Chartered Institute of Foresters at the APF, those who already have the L6 will get 4 points towards professional membership, those currently taking L6 will only get 3 points. The RFS used to endorse the L6 on their website, they have now redesigned their website and have their own qualifications with ABC and although they mention the L4 diploma they have ommited the L6 altogether. Feel free to tell Dave that this info comes from Percy, he was ev for Warwickshire College before all sorts of complications started. Thanks for looking into this.
  10. do not touch warwickshire college!!! they are severly lacking in their delivery and admin!!!!!
  11. Hello Arbtalkers, I am seriously concerned about the validity of the Level 6 Diploma In Arboriculture (ABC). I gained this new qualification in June this year after 2 years hard study producing a portfolio of over 130,000 words. I was under the impression that this qualification was a revised version of the old Pro Dip Arb that it would would carry an equal weight within the industry. Over the past couple of weeks I am starting to get feedback that The Chartered Institute of Foresters and The RFS are downgrading their recognition of this qualification. Does anyone 'in the know' have any feedback on the validity of the qualification and how the industry view it?
  12. Not had the pleasure of meeting him yet. Looking forward to the day he comes in to do his thing. I hope to meet him then.
  13. Yep! All done and dusted. Marked and internal verification done. College applied to ABC for my diploma which should trigger the external verifier to visit and check all is good. Bit strange really as after 2 years the external bloke hasn't even shown up to look at anything??? I think the bloke who wrote the syllabus is e.v. for our college?
  14. Hi APC. The syllabus for the level 6 diploma is available on the ABC website. To achieve the diploma you have to complete 6 compulsory units (including an independent research project) and 2 from 4 optional units. It is a mammoth task over 2 years part-time. I word counted my portfolio and have written just short of 130,000 words. Do not underestimate the work that you need to do for this qualification. I studied at Moreton Morrell in Warwickshire and am currently awaiting my diploma from ABC. If you take on this course, good luck, it is achievable.
  15. Well done Mike, you must be really pleased with your achievement! This diploma should set you up with all the skills you need in tree and woodland managment or consultancy.
