Bought the mill on ebay with spare 051 powerhead Because its a big mill i thought about setting the spare powerhead up as a smaller alaskan forthe smaller jobs. maybe with an 18" cut, any bigger and id get the big one out. is this a sensible idea? what bar and chain would i need, whats the most suitable mill. It works same way at normal auction house too, i bought a core cutter and drill set from an auction house a few months ago, advertised as full working order, when i got it home i plugged it in and nothing. On inspection it had no brushes and clutch was clearly broken. Returned to auction house, got full refund of £90, made them an offer of £25 and walked away with it. bought clutch part needed, made some brushes, everybody happy. Contracts are always 2 way, and i definately am not a bad buyer. James

Exactly that, i have no intention of messing anyone around, he has a duty to advertise the lot accurately and if he has,i.e. item is in good working order then we dont have a problem. If hes advertised incorrectly then he has cost me time and money. Its too far for me to travel twice. I meerely wanted to check that there wasnt an obvious thing on the mill, which may only show up in use and not by an amateur inspection, that would deem it useless. The legalities of an auction work both ways and i certainly have no intention of breaking my contract,providing he hasnt already broken his. Im going to collect next sunday, so ill post some pics of it in use when i get round to it.

Imo avoid like the plague. Expensive pretend Eco heat. For that money you can install a gasification boiler and get Proper Eco heat. The whole system is nonsense to me, like leaving a fridge open to cool Ta house down in summer. Just doesn't work. Avoid avoid avoid. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

Hi all just bought this mill on ebay. Would appreciate a little advice on what i should be checking out on these before handing over cash, obviously ill be checking the powerheads run ok . But what should i be checking on mill etc. Will be my first mill, so newbie on this really. Thx, help really appreciated. James

So wouldyou buy the cheaper peterson, could have slabber and weatherboard attatchment and £2000change, or the more expensive lucas with no extras?

Ive benen looking into buying a mill lately, i was shocked at the cost of a lucas, every forum i read says lucas are cheaper then peterson but i got prices last week and its considerably the other way. 8" Lucas no extras £13600 8" Peterson ats no extras £10311 Surprised me,coz im thinking that the peterson is maybe better, but i know others differ. James

Tree quip is correct, pre 97 cant exceed the towing weight of car, they have a max train weight of 8.2 tonnes, but only if the vehicle and trailer are rated for it, after 97 max train 3.5 tonnes max trailer 750kg. Some exceptions for caravans on domestic car for after 97

Save for a big one, I'd say 14" min. A small one will annoy you, I picked up a reasonable Clarke 16" on ebay for 105. Not the best but more than adequate. Thinking bout chopping it in for a startrite though if anyone knows of one going cheapish. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

Thanks, I see your point alec. I'm used to dealing with milled timber really, just trying to work out this oak for the floor/sills and see if the one oak will be enough and how to allow for sap wood, metal in tree etc. The first oak is hedgerow but we have another in woodland we also want to mill and wondering if we can mill both in a day with a Lucas. After much research im still stuck, so, 1. How do i work out the hoppus of a standing oak tree? 2. Does your hoppus calculation change for different species to take into account larger bands of sapwood, or does sapwood get included in calculation? Thanks James

Good answer from woodworks. I sharpen everything freehand. Have several knives sharpened at different angles, pocket knife about 25 degrees down to detail carving about 10-12 degrees. All my planes I roll the hone and then put a micro bevel on rolled edge at about 25deg. Not strictly correct but was taught to me buy an old chippy and it works well and is quick, no need to be super accurate. If you struggle with the angle, cut an offcut to desired angle and place next to your stone and use as a visual reference. With practice you can get super edges on your tools. Its a burr, and no not really worth anything, if i had it id cut the burr off and make a bowl or something from it,but i wouldnt buy it. If you had a bandsaw you could rough plank it and you may get a small nice piece but probably not too special. James

If you can get an owl in there you wont have any swallow problems, however its remarkably easier to get swallows than an owl. May take some time, but would be well worth it in the end. James

Thanks Flames. Think i decided to invest in some t+g cutters for me router table and do it properly. Just need to mod me table to take me bigger router. Thanks for advice, tree being felled 23rd feb and Lucas mill booked in for 15th march. Will take some pics and keep you all posted. James

Well said Clive, seems native hardwoods aint the easiest to shift these days, especially green and on the round. Must be coz they dont have a lovely red or black stamp on them. Its sad when wickes can get more for a lump of scandinavian pine that you can achieve on a lovely lump of native lumber.
