  1. That SIP is a reasonable little saw, you'd do well to snap it up. I saw a similar 10" sip sell on ebay for £90 ish if that helps. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  2. Cant watch on iplayer anymore, anyone know where i can see it?
  3. Save for a big one, I'd say 14" min. A small one will annoy you, I picked up a reasonable Clarke 16" on ebay for 105. Not the best but more than adequate. Thinking bout chopping it in for a startrite though if anyone knows of one going cheapish. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  4. Thanks, I see your point alec. I'm used to dealing with milled timber really, just trying to work out this oak for the floor/sills and see if the one oak will be enough and how to allow for sap wood, metal in tree etc. The first oak is hedgerow but we have another in woodland we also want to mill and wondering if we can mill both in a day with a Lucas. Think I'm gunna send pics to sawyer and see what he thinks, what do you think? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  5. After much research im still stuck, so, 1. How do i work out the hoppus of a standing oak tree? 2. Does your hoppus calculation change for different species to take into account larger bands of sapwood, or does sapwood get included in calculation? Thanks James
  6. Good answer from woodworks. I sharpen everything freehand. Have several knives sharpened at different angles, pocket knife about 25 degrees down to detail carving about 10-12 degrees. All my planes I roll the hone and then put a micro bevel on rolled edge at about 25deg. Not strictly correct but was taught to me buy an old chippy and it works well and is quick, no need to be super accurate. If you struggle with the angle, cut an offcut to desired angle and place next to your stone and use as a visual reference. With practice you can get super edges on your tools. 7. Its a burr, and no not really worth anything, if i had it id cut the burr off and make a bowl or something from it,but i wouldnt buy it. If you had a bandsaw you could rough plank it and you may get a small nice piece but probably not too special. James
  8. If you can get an owl in there you wont have any swallow problems, however its remarkably easier to get swallows than an owl. May take some time, but would be well worth it in the end. James
  9. make good use of the space and put things away when finished Put things away when finished? THat is a very interesting theory.
  10. This is all sorted now thanks to mendiplogs Jon. Many thanks Jon, your a top banana.
  11. Thanks Flames. Think i decided to invest in some t+g cutters for me router table and do it properly. Just need to mod me table to take me bigger router. Thanks for advice, tree being felled 23rd feb and Lucas mill booked in for 15th march. Will take some pics and keep you all posted. James
  12. Well said Clive, seems native hardwoods aint the easiest to shift these days, especially green and on the round. Must be coz they dont have a lovely red or black stamp on them. Its sad when wickes can get more for a lump of scandinavian pine that you can achieve on a lovely lump of native lumber.
  13. After a choice bit of landscaping/plastering etc. "its up and down like a whores drawers" Others "You paid for that hammer handle so use it" On cold day "if you want to get ahead, get a hat" James
  14. Chainsaw use is very little of what I do, I'm not qualified for that argument, but doesn't that belong in another thread When I've run that nailer for a year. I'll post a review, and let you all know my honest experience, but at 250, will pay for it self in one job. James Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  15. Looks nice, how straight/flat is it? Hard to tell in pics.
  16. I think thats your favourite comment!
  17. I was disagreeing with the price not being silly, only £5 cheaper than a brand new one, also with 2 batteries. Seems silly to me. The question of copy tools or top brand is another matter, copies dont have to be any worse, although they maybe alot worse. This paticular gun i recommended has proven to be fault free for the two years my friend has owned it. Maybe it wont last as long as a paslode maybe it will. Look at the nails and gas the same company sells, the same grade nails as paslode, same grade steel, hot dipped in same substance, but at a much lower price. Maybe you believe that paslode nails are better, but i dont. Please dont get me wrong, I own a large amount of good quality tools mostly dewalt and makita, but im also open to the fact that small outfits can also make quality tools and if proven in the workplace im willing to give them a go. Companies like paslode as a market leader with little mainstream competition are free to charge what they like, and i think at a list price of about £600 its overpriced. Its not as complicated as a chainsaw and i think as i said, when i get one next month ill get the proven copy rather than a possibly mistreated secondhand unit from ebay. Oh and no i dont buy stihl copy saws, i buy husqy. James
  18. Wheres the pics then, dont log it up, youve already gone to the trouble of milling it!
  19. Its right near you isnt it clive, maybe your brave enough to put your miser through it?
  20. Ive got a small piece of walnut root in me workshop, its lovely, but the question is, whos gunna be brave enough to put there saw in it?
  21. Thats why you need a swingmill. sacrilege ringing up a beautiful walnut, one of the finest woods in my opinion.
  22. I disagree Kev , 2mins research and ivefound two new with warranty for 475 and 480. I assumed the op meant hed found a new one in shop, but maybe it was secondhand? Paslode are too expensive and id seriously consider the quikload in the link above. I wouldnt be surprised if they came from same factory!
  23. Thats not a great price but is ok, can always get them for about that. Im buying a nailer for the next job im starting. Stable conversion with loads of framing. Im buying one of these QUIKLOAD QL90 GAS STRIP NAILER £250 SIMILAR TO PASLODE NAILER | eBay Guy i used to workwith had one, and there identical to paslode but half price. Did a massive floor with this and a paslode on site and it performed as well, feels as solid, he rates it, hes had for couple of years and still going strong. Gets my vote.. Interesting to hear if anybody else has experience of them? Im350 is ideal for feather edge too James
  24. Where is it? got any pics, may be intersted if location and money are right. James
