"Q - I’m an arborist, do I need to undertake a FISA refresher, to work on a FISA member’s site? A - Utility arborist qualifications require a 3 yearly recertification to evidence continued competency, and as they are not harvesting timber, and the majority of the utility work is aerial operations rather than free felling, they fall outside the FISA refresher training requirement. Operators maintaining their utility qualifications / recertification is sufficient evidence of an operators refresher and competence. Therefore they do not require a FISA refresher course to operate on a FISA members site. If a utility qualified operator is employed to “specifically harvest timber” under a harvesting contract and not a utility contract, then attendance of a FISA refresher is required." FISA twisting the rules to justify there existance and stop the companies outside the clique playing........how can a certificate issued by the ONLY autherised body (city and guilds) not be acceptable, they have already been warned about there actions.....total corruption in the forestry industry

welcome to the corrupt world of FISA, and its "jobs for the boys" system and attitude
  3. with the crane on it, you've already compressed the original springs beyond the tapered portion, was it fitted with the double, Ie inner and outer rears, or was it on a single, and did it have the factory lift kit fited. as for the load sensing valve, it is totally adjustable, it can be set up to suit whatever spring/load combination is fitted. are you going to be using it seriously off road, or just "off road", because with a large chip box, a rear anti roll bar would be a good investment, also watch your front- rear weight ratio, or your going to get seasick very quickly, as has been said, an interesting project, but lots more piccies needed
  4. its firewood, burn everything, even the sawdust if you can be bothered clearing it up
  5. the branch logger concept is an eastern european one, google rebak, or search on you tube, there are dozens of refrences to them, even to guys loading wood burning boilers with bags of the stuff, they are a brilliant concept, and are available to do branches up to 150mm this is serious log territory, I made a lot of enquiries about the kit, reasonably cheap in eastern europe, but out of reach here, and most companies wont sell into the UK because of stupid H&S rules regarding there use
  6. and as a post script its only certain parts of vision that go, cos I can still hit a fig 11 at a 1000m on iron sights!
  7. never mind eye test at 65, try nearer 50, and as a driver at 55, I would support this, I thought it was just the lighting was getting bad as small print was getting harder to read, but surprise surprise, a trip to the optician revealed a need for glasses, catches everyone up, and piloting a ton plus weapon on the public roads, testing should be compulsory
  8. children can still be homeschooled in the uk, the quickest answer to the problem is actually very simple. dont book any holidays during school holidays, this would soon force the travell companys to bring there prices down, they work on pre-booking/buying so many thousand places knowing that they have a captive market, could you imagine the panic if these were left on there books, at there expense
  9. that, Ty, puts things into perspective, it can be difficult trying to get laymen to understand the hidden overheads involved in costing jobs, they dont see behind the face of whats going on
  10. curious as to why you didnt just straight fell the tree and log it on the ground, couldnt see any restrictions around nesscesitating a climbing job
  11. funny how theres no need for a chainsaw "ticket " when a saws used away from the tree envioroment.....fencing, or joinery work, do the trees emit some majic spell that makes saws dangerous.....THERE JUST ANOTHER TOOL, its the operator that makes the dangerous move, for over 40 years now I've been using chainsaws of all types, from the very first, with no chain brakes or AV, right up to the modern low vibe stuff, top handles, rear handles, there all the same......learn to use the saw safely, and never put anything in the path of the chain you dont want cut FULL STOP. it doesnt matter what PPE your wearing, or what your doing, that is the first and only rule about safe operation of a chainsaw irrespective of type.
  12. the questions that must be asked, have you, the parent actually signed a legal contract with the school, very doubtfull, and when did the school authourities gain the rights of a court to impose fines. I sugest you research the 1886 bill of rights act, which is still current in the UK, and is the legal document that sets out who can impose fines, most of these jumped education officers can be shut down by quoting a few simple legal rules that they must comply with, and should your community have a backbone, everytime the teachers are off for some pitifull excuse, every parent presents the education authority with a bill for the teachers failing to provide a contracted service, its been done, and very quickly any media coverage was blanked and the whole thing hushed up......remember in this country rules are by consent, not force
  13. instead of blaming eror 1515, try blaming the idiots that sell all the woodburners with the recomendations" you've got to burn only seasoned hardwoods", and start and convince folk that what they really need is seasoned TREEWOOD, we might actually have some decent timber left in this country then, and a market for all the pine, spruce, and larch thats ending up going to biomass, or being left to rot roadside
  14. you bill them for your day rate for every day your in court, they are in effect contracting your time
  15. what is bad use of a top handle, were they using it as a hammer or something, its only a saw, not some mythical wonder tool.......and contrary to popular myth, it works very well on the ground, used by non arborists
  16. anybody down there in the penarth area looking for a good worker, I've a trainee finishing her training arounnd the end of feb who is going tobe moving back to family in penarth, she should have cs30, 31, chipper, strimmer, paw1 and paw6 , and whatever else we can squeeze in by the time she finishes, and a really good worker, can hold her own with some of the more experienced guys, let me know, cos I'd like to see her doing well as she really has showed potential
  17. try clarkes for your stratos ropes, Ive seen them used on some of the big forestry jobs and there streets ahead of steel and chain
  18. any good quality oil based outdoor paint, well thinned for first couple of coats, then slap it on, especially on cut edges. your trying to prevent ingress of moisture, nothing magical
  19. all you have to do is work your shed into multiples of 1200 x2400 ( or 1220 x2440, always check whats supplied) and base your shed on these, a weekend see's a big shed going up, just check you can get roof beams in your size, (usually C16 or C24 spec can be gotton in up to 6m length) . I've found sheds and garages can be built for around 1/3 to 1/2 what it costs to get someone in
  20. the done thing is to set up a trust, then register everything to the trust, the board running the trust only need to meet once a year, so any paperwork can be dealt with, it seems all our politcal masters are at it as it makes them even slippier with regards to the law

  22. the answer to any question asked by plod is, "no, its not a new built trailer, I repaired my old one, there are some new parts on it.", this gets round all the stupid money grabbing IVA rules,
  23. Ukulian, you must be one of the few left...lol. as a youngster I was shown how to sharpen and set saws, why there was different angles for certain jobs, how to sharpen planes, chisels, scrapers, all the skills a carpenter required, how to safely use the machinery in the shop, all before my teenage years, it caused a major fallout at school when I told the woodwork teacher he knew f*ck all about what he was trying to teach, and my father and 2 uncles backed me up, had to do techie drawing instead. these days everything is either throwaway, or goes to a "specialist" to sharpen, and most timber production jobs have been "tweaked" to use machine runs, the old carpentry skills are being slowly lost, never to be passed on
  24. and before anyone asks, tyres marked B are speed rated to 31mph, anything with an A8, up to 25mph, A1 to A7, less than that, so check out whats obn your agri machines, and if you run a mog, the minimum is a G speed rating.
  25. and as a little side bar on the above, any piece of equipment used on the tractors must be capable of the speed, most agri trailers are not, the brakes are not compliant, and the tyres are not speed rated, so work it out......3 points for speeding, 3 points per tyre, 3points for defective brakes, so on a simple 2 wheeled trailer, your licence is gone, not to mention the cost in fines, is it worth it for a few minutes off the traveling time.
