  1. I kinda doubt it? No idea what I paid, but guessing sub £100.00? Nicely made robust thing though, in a wee cordura carry case, with an optional plug in temperature probe. Cheers Mth
  2. I had commented on another thread, as to how dry my firewood was, according to my GEM moisture meter and averaging readings. I kinda knew the readings were too unlikely low to be correct, so I "investigated" a little. I had somehow, inadvertently clicked the wrong range for timber specis. Back on the correct range it gave a more likely to be correct 20%! I am oven drying a sample log to check the accuracy. marcus
  3. I remember being in awe of the simplicty of how the power steering worked on the new bought Universal 540, back in the mid 1970's, it was the same as the retro-fit kit as pictured above by Billhook. It was genius mounting the valve on the end of the ram and having it operated by the existing steering linkage. Or so teenage me thought. That was our first tractor with power steering, and having just staved a thumb by dunting a front wheel in against a wall while driving the DB 990 I allowed PS was a very good idea! Mind you Dad had refused to pay for the optional factory-fit PS kit for the 434 International, when he bought it new, and it replaced the B250 on loader work, for about 20 years. mth
  4. Paddy, I saw that stunt done with a balloon, filled with the Oxy-Acety mix, and after carrying well away from the cylinders(or perhaps not😌) ignited, it was a most impressively hard sharp loud "BANG". It certainly emphasised that Oxy-Actyl should be treated with respect.
  5. Does the rear wash-wipe still work!
  6. Ah knowed that! I have never worked with Acetylene, but once spent quite a while larning all aboot it on the interweds, I suspect if it had been invented recently, it would NEVER have EVER gotten approved the way it was way back then, fascinating dangerous tempremental stuff that it is. But I really really want to shoot up a full cyl to see if the Austrians are right! The .303 will FMJ ammo should do grand.
  7. I saw a reference recently to an Austrian Fire Service document detailing how to shoot Acety cyls with a rifle, presumably better to deal with a jet of burning gas, than an exploding Acety cylinder. Strange but apparently true!
  8. Oh Aye! Determined to show off the Reverse Drive facility are'nt we! P.S. Only envious.

Well said "J", I totally agree with your observations above. mth

    Covid-19

Indeed Spud, But! the death toll from other ailments that were NOT dealt with BECAUSE of Covid, could well exceed the true Covid deaths (i.e. not including falsely Covid recorded deaths) and I believe I saw some figures to this effect. And of course there will be multiple other mutant strains of Covid, which may be even more untreatable.. Plus, God knows what other lurgy comes in out of the blue and completely blindsides a world obsessed by Covid, like most all Armies fighting the next war based on their experiences in the last war. Doh P.S. I also saw a chart hi-lighting the decreasing winter mortality, year-on-year, in the UK, over say this past 20 years, probably due to more proactive health care and the Flu innoculation programme, so in part Covid may simply be playing catch-up on all those who cheated death in these previous years. My take is, we will live with Covid, or die with Covid, but we will be unlikely to avoid Covid, since it is a virus like the Flu, which has not ever been eliminated. So life simply MUST go on, regardless. Marcus P.P.S. I hope me nor mine catch Covid, especially with wor daughter spending 6 weeks(and poss more) in a Covid positive ward.
  11. I had a fresh tomato yesterday, , with a few sprogs coming on, AND flowers for more! From last years as yet unpulled out tomato plant behind the glass at the front door, in an otherwise unheated space. So late they are early! P.S. I mentioned moving the glasshouse to Senior Management no later than this morning. Ya Boo Sucks!
  12. Her be brimming! see pics;
  13. Ye Ha! Bring it on. The rain that is. Cos me wee pond has finally brimmed! And in the best place for the overflow. mth P.S. But we had a glorious crisp dry sunny day yesterday.
  14. I have several items new bought, but now not new, but kept under cover, where the PC has effortlessly and cleanly peeled back to the bare steel. Not prepped nor primed obviously. Anyway imho PC is best applied on top of hot dip galvansing. Or just leave it galvanised if possible. But cheap and impressive sounding, and people are easy fooled. Gerrr!
  15. I line the 4 sides of the grate/firebox with finer split conifer, and crumpled up newspaper or torn-up cardboard in the middle, light, and then place a few more finer split sticks on top. And leave the door ajar on the snib for say 5 to 10 mins. Then add more sticks. Simples
  16. I remain totally perplexed by this event.
  17. On that note; I had my 1984 DB1490 out Friday past "footering" to warm her up before parking her in again. At tickover revs, minimal steering input and quite without warning "Phoofht" accompanied by a gargle of hydraulic** oil round my feet, plus no steering! If that had happened on the County road, especially on a roundabout for instance . . . Even 12mph would have been scary fast. **actually Super Universal tractor oil I believe, but will check.
  18. Erm, your Honour, is that actually legal?
  19. I feel for your innocent Valmet, but at 60+ have started to understand being thankful nobody was hurt/badly hurt. Marcus
  20. I have pondered why they bother with 12V as well as their 18V, what does 12 do that 18 cant? Ditto re other brands.
  21. Well I pulled a few smaller split Sitka from beneath the stove, between 6 and 9%, then pulled a couple from the box I brought in 24hr earlier, about 10 to 12%, and the ones from the logpile in the shed, were showing 12 to 15%. And based on how easy any of these logs are to kindle, with scrumpled up newspaper/cardboard, I could believe these figures. They were all end grain readings without splitting afresh. I appreciate my meter could be a bit optomistic, but my gut feeling is it cannot be far wrong, since I bring in random sizes from the logpile, and use the finer split bits to light the fire, generally after letting them sit 24 hrs squirrelled away beneath the stove. But if the wife has squandered my carefully hoarded kindling stockpile I have bytimes simply picked up fresh brought in cold sticks and used them, with no signs of dampness being evidenced when doing so to light the fire. m
  22. Wherewill the shit go?
  23. An Axe! How much training, RA statements and ambulances-on-standby are needed to facilitate that endevour!
  24. Must check some o mine tomorrow!
