  1. Thanks for the links Tony- I'm going to have to think this through. Seems the Earth has achieved a balance based on energy inputs. A bit of a closed system really with regular additions of energy from the sun plus whats in the earths core. As always energy is the key.
  2. Looking at some of fred dibnahs videos I realise hoe H&S has changed the way we work. No barriers/ no hard hats etc etc- kids running around the site. It's an eye opener.
  3. Industrial unit £150 pcm Theres small business rate relief If the rentable value of your unit is less than £6000 (I think) there are no rates to pay. Sliding scale to about £12000 It'[s a mafia protection racket- you pay us (the council) to do business in our town- you don't even get your bins collected or in our case our road swept.
  4. Interesting comment on carbon offsetting Tony I haven't researched it and I can understand that a lot of this is aimed at salving the consciences of travellers and other high carbon footprint humans. It feels like a con but you call it a stupid scheme- would you expand on this?
  5. Hi Big Fell What are the dots in your head?
  6. Buy both and as much as you can get Birch/oak mix would work fantastic- aesthetic by the fire and the birch would encourage the oak to 'motor'
  7. Just remembered- the original steel to the tipper body started to rust within a few weeks and we sent it back- The schultz was their cowboy 'fix'. We gave up after that. The tipper body was the worst rusting cabstar body we have ever had including through the paintwork and glad to replace it with the new ones -aluminium.
  8. Does this stuff actually work? I had a cabstar schutzed a few years ago from new and the rust just developed under the coating then flaked it off.
  9. I need to get into this then £1600 for half a day:thumbup1: materials= say £100 I guess thats not PA6 but next one up
  10. Bear in mind its probably spot treatment so you won't be spraying every metre so you need to ask whether they are paying every metre. I suspect they will be and the price/rate will reflect this
  11. Storm in a teacup The guy needs to charge more= sound advice/criticism call it what you want. He's lucky we are here to tell him When I started out , Arbtalk didn't exist- come to think of it, the internet didn't exist!!! Mobile phones were big as bricks Hell- a lot's gone on in that time
  12. You need a new calculator 6pence a second more like how far can you walk with a knapsack in 1 minute- 3miles /hr 4500metres/hr 4500metres/3600seconds round it up = 2seconds per metre knapsack rate has to include stops to fill every say 5-10mins depending on volume include this in your calc. Round here the contractors use quad bikes with a big tank on- they motor at about 5-8mph. This must be the most competitive way to do it. Add in costs of chemicals- once again depends on those being used and rate This time of year I guess it's just Glyphosate. Good luck
  13. personally I think this thread is well balanced in its help/criticism ratio. Theres loads of advice on how to do the job plus on how to price the job. What more could the OP want. The OP may read through this in a months time and realise this- honest views and advice from arbtalk members- makes the forum what it is- we don't want a forum where we are censored in expressing our views or bullied into toeing the party line-(beyond the obvious)- That doesn't make good debate. So lets not be afraid to say what we feel- in that way we explore (through others different opinions) where we stand on an issue beyond 'knee jerk' reaction. Losing work to professional outfits is just business. Losing work to start ups who then go on to criticise guys (for charging too much)who have been at it for years is pretty hard to take especially when times are hard
  14. Brilliant post We had the chat today over dinner- have asked the boys to join the club though one can't due to yellow fever vaccinations fo another year. It takes about 1 hour of your day and is not just used for transfusions Blood products are seen regularly on the cancer wards. Platelets to help blood clot. I think they even get stem cells out of donated blood. Don't wait till it affects you. Please donate blood One step further is bone marrow I met a girl with Hodgkins today who has a match with 2 people in Germany. As a final request- body after death. Sounds gruesome but do it(tell your nearest and dearest first)
  15. He's not charging enough and he's not paying his dad enough- just thank god he's not your boss:thumbup:
  16. whats pre fab lawn roll from B&Q It's not that plastic edging is it:thumbdown:
  17. 17 crap isn't it missed two I'd been to as well Theres loads on the Eastern side that no one will get Now try naming english counties
  18. Thats very clever the way you did the steps Interesting visually and practical. They just need to spend dosh on some planting for the rest of the garden To note- the two brick thing is building regs for new houses- there are times when this can be ignored. Lets face it in driving rain the wall is getting wet anyway. Personally I would like to see all houses built with disabled access style doors as steps are a pain for everyone not just disabled:001_smile:
  19. that gig was a bit special wasn't it The design of the stage came to life with the dark- watched the whole thing though I didn't intend to. Great mix of music from world performers- It was a celebration of our reach across the globe- not just a jingoistic / overly patriotic event which it could so easily have been- Gary Barlow - he pens some fantastic stuff (whether you like take that or not) the quality of Sing just shines through.
  20. You are offering to work for free and they ask for a cv! Sign of the times My thoughts are that with free work- It is tempting to say YES but there comes that moment when you have to say thanks but we don't need you now. That can be awkward. You're really after a placement that may lead to a job- they call it internship in the city I think.
  21. Happy is good:thumbup: You're as young as you feel:biggrin:
  22. Mate- you got to charge more I assume (I may be wrong) you arn't paying tax- cash jobs- private customers love these. You're relatively new to this and it shows. We all started thereabouts. Pedroski has some good advice even though he has come across harsh. Mini digger through the door was my first thought too! Are you insured? etc etc etc Just watch it when you have a go at guys who charge £25 an hour for this sort of work. Remember the phone doesn't ring from November to April in your first year. My first job as a was to dig out a slope for a conservatory- took me 2 days and I sweated thinking I had to prove myself. Soon as I was done it was cheers mate- heres your cash Bye bye. No more work from anyone for a week. Of course he'd had a quote from the builders for this and I was considerably cheaper. Can't blame him. I was a young naive kid ripe for the taking. Take good advice- charge more- honestly come November you will understand why you had to.
  23. I try not to get too nationalistic- it has caused too many problems in the past but I can't help myself- we had the red arrows in Folkestone on Saturday before they went to see the queen. Brings a lump to your throat! They also sent down a Typhoon to show off over the beach- stunning plane and - yes I know it's not British but= moving with the times is a great collaboration
