  1. Pay a good price to have it done properly using quality materials and probably never have to pay again. Pay cheap and you'll never be happy and odds are you'll have to spur it or replace it after 7-10 years. Trouble is you're probably paying double the price originally and people just can't resist what they see as a bargain
  2. We keep a dry powder 9kg fire extinguisher at the top of the stairs If we got a chimney fire the nozzle would fit nicely in the side openings of the stove without opening the door (making things worse) Also thought it would be a good defence against intruders- who could attack you with a faceful of powder
  3. biggest problem is pallets on the ground- they help airflow but can be an ankle twister when you are treading in there
  4. I quite like softwood It burns faster so maybe you keep piling on the wood Could you just let it die down more between refills The fast burn heats the chimney (in situ radiator) up more
  5. i've noticed the smaller branches of celtic maple seem to be a completely different wood to the main stem- the main stem can be incredibly hard wheras the branches are soft and easy to cut Is there a reason for this anyone knows
  6. What did you do then- go on - let us know Did you say go swivvel or did you go back all humble and remove every last bit of wood- then get another call saying the tennant has complained that there is a dip in his garden filling up with water that is a safety issue. Then you went back with 2 tones topsoil and spread Tennant complained that it wasn't green back you go and turf tennant complains it has gone all yellow and how could they water it as there is a hosepipe ban and the corners are kicking up presenting an H&S issue. Reminds me of the song ' theres a hole in my bucket' Don't you just love it
  7. It's difficult- not helped by the recent unseasonal weather- imagine what the garden centres are experiencing The money comes in but goes out faster-an indication that you either have to get more efficient/work harder or put up prices. Hang in there- this can't go on forever. It was bound to happen(16 years without a recession) I think there will be an Olympic bounce.
  8. know the feeling We have over the past 2 weeks been getting contracts through for work for the year beginning september 2012 for us to sign(agree to). But they are all at last years prices. How much longer before something snaps. If inflation in our business (waste/fuel in particular) is running at I guess 4% how many years can you continue not increasing prices. Perhaps its not 4%- I'm just guessing.
  9. Agreed Whole bill including fine now paid I will phone next week and ask for the fine back. I agree- seems crazy to get in this position and I never have before but this year - well - just not organised I did think £500 was a bit much considering
  10. Finally paid my tax from jan 31st Got a £500 fine/interest on top. Now I've always paid up on time in the past but plain missed it this year-confused by my accountant. £500 for a one off mistake Does anyone on here know if this is standard practice and should I have argued a bit more to get the fine reduced. I know this is a bit like stable door/horse thinggy but at least I'll know next time
  11. They do look **** Take a pic in 5years time and republish this thread
  12. thats the thing I believe they use less water. When we were on holiday in corsica the villa owners had fixed the dishwasher so it only did eco washes because they get charged more for water in the summer. We found we had to put it on twice to get the stuff clean= defeated the purpose of eco button. Turned out their fix was to put a bit of insulating tape over a sensor so we removed it - naughty
  13. meeting up with google juice who are offering free 40 min chats about peoples websites. Hoping it's not just a way of getting me to sign up to something:thumbdown:
  14. If you gonna use as a wedge then would be best to not repair
  15. I've often thought this If they really are mates then they should be happy to help you and pay the going rate.
  16. I'm thinking Oleomac- Italian I seem to remember or maybe it was McCulloch Both were rubbish
  17. Registered on wednesday after two of us spending a good day sorting out all the relevant forms and uploading them. It's a bit of a headache TBH Time will tell- you get van stickers and buyers get your details so who knows. I would think it's more of a -you need to be registered to appear professional.= more expense I'll tell you in a couple of months.
  18. Bought an echo long reach hedgecutter that turns out to be rubbish compared to the stihls I had been complaining about- we're just gonna have to learn to live with stihls.
  19. Been in business 30 years Seem to have avoided 99% of all this corruption stuff. This has been a hard wired decision.
  20. This is a good answer Sometimes intuition and reading the site is more important than tables so long as you can show you have used your noddle:001_smile:
  21. Guess the american chippers don't have the safety bars like ours. I couldn't envisage a child getting past ours unless they were dropped from above. Maybe I'm not imaginative enough
  22. I'd be the first as a boss to want to be included in practical jokes (of the harmless variety). It's part of having broad shoulders. In truth I think it makes you feel as though you are part of the team. This action by your rogue subbie is spiteful and nasty. Not acceptable in anyones books. What though is he doing up at 3am on a regular basis. Word of warning- watch this guy, he may not be finished yet and when he can't make a payment on his tractor will want to blame someone. I'm sure you'll cope
  23. what did they expect No dimensions How on earth did they expect you to price:confused1: Oh it's not very big is not accurate enough. I've got a customer at the moment who keeps coming back to us but every job we do they are moaning about something- expecting something extra for free. Can't wait till this recession is history- unfortunately the attitudes it has created may be with us for some time.
  24. Thats the value of firewood at work. A local construction company estimator was telling me about a Railway bridge that they PAID £20K to get the job (remove) basically because of the value of the metal. Agreed it's not altogether the same thing but this is the environment we now work in. Having said that I have never paid a customer for the firewood- it feels like it should be a perk of the trade or it's a pain to get rid of and firewood is the cheapest way of getting rid of it. Only last week we totally screwed a 3ft chain as the tree was full of nails/screws(where the customer had put up birdboxes over the years) Thats about £50-60 chain cost for £80 worth of logs (but only once seasoned and logged). Just wasn't worth it.
