  1. One in each vehicle is good practice though when checked recently at the tip one of our trucks had no ticket but they were able to check- all OK Probably just saves time if you are checked regularly.
  2. Compensate! Thats gonna cost Didn't the customer instruct the lad:001_tt2:
  3. Thats rogue traders lost face!! Trouble with all this is like I heard said The difference between Jimmy Carr and Joe public is simply opportunity.
  4. Thats the price of spares these days I was in my local nissan dealership revently £22 for an E clip- should be pennies £58 for a wing mirror glass- were £22 about 3 years ago. Firms are making big money on spares as we are fixing things more rather than buy new.
  5. So theres your answer Something between £15 and £200 a day:001_smile:
  6. £100 per day= £23k per year Bound to be some days off so maybe looking at 18-20K p.a. You need a new saw every 3 years and new climbing kit similar but still it's reasonable. Trouble is freelancing is very much weather dependent and you are at the beck and call of whoever is giving you work- can be hard to complain then if jobs are postponed. At the end of the day it's down to you and how much you enjoy your work. BTW climbing is usually day rate so crack on and get paid a full day for 3/4 day work= job and knock. Do it so your gaffa doesn't know and he won't up the amount of work he gives you next time. If he complains then make sure every job takes the full day and take it easy.
  7. Is it the groundy (ex climber) who is pushing you- is this a macho stance because he is trying to make him look good. Safety comes with consideration, speed with experience.
  8. Surely theres a claim whether it was evident or not. If a roof tile fell from my roof on someones car then I would expect to be liable. What I'm saying is the OP has been disadvantaged by the tree incident so why are they arguing about it. He has a claim on the owner regardless. Maybe I don't see this properly.
  9. Do you mean additional to the ones in your hard hat?
  10. Our climber has used his mums ultrasonic sterilising machine- for surgical instruments on his 200 carb so suspect this might work- think they only cost £20 ish. Personally airline has always been my preferred MO.
  11. Just seen a picture of one of these and wondered whether anyone on here had used one and with what success. Get the feeling it could be hard on the shoulders/elbows and more work than the traditional axe but sometimes these new fangled gadgets can impress. Hmmm..
  12. Been following this thread- have to say well done all I'd love to see the oldboys reaction when he gets out of hospital. Hope you did the right tree:001_smile:
  13. Good result- I too was thinking how the gardener was going to take the criticism if he/she came round and saw what had been done. Have to say I'm with Huck and Tony on this- estates of old had tree work that needed doing and spare gardeners in the winter so it worked well- plus lighter wood for transport- lets face it most transport was manual or horses. Many many customers still believe this to be the case!! In fact it's been mentioned to me several times that this or that 'cowboy' firm don't know what they are doing pruning in summer. Oh yes and not putting that black stuff on the wounds- everyones an expert.
  14. More MEWP issues I've been stuck up in one over a house when the battery went dead after being charged constantly for 4 hours. I suspect the hire companies don't do the proper checks- but could I prove it. Good call on taking abseil up with you or at the least a long rope. Not sure whether being harnessed in is good thing or not. Anyone got feelings on this.
  15. Also thinking if you carried on working after assessing that they needed PPE- what if your hung up hit one of them on the head and they claimed- would they be claiming off you. Who's running the site- responsibility It's a minefield and just because some bloke gets the arse because he doesn't like being told to don hard hat. Sounds a bit testosterone fuelled- as usual this is not the best working combination. Surely there must be some structure in place if you have this shared responsibility- you for National Park trees and them for highway clearance. If not then maybe it's a good time to get something put in place. Otherwise when the s**t hits the fan next time you could be out on a limb (Nice pun) You definately need to get in touch with the council relevant department- it is the professional way and then next time everyone knows their responsibilities. It's a problem sometimes I know especially when a customer/tennant decides he/she knows best and starts helping us clear stuff or decides to cut a hedge nearby -'because they can put the arisings through your chipper- you don't mind do you'....... thats maybe for another thread.
  16. Thats the correct answer Andy but what do you do at the time? And in the circumstance. I suspect the correct answer is to refuse to continue working unless they comply. If they continue then phone their manager. It's a sad world that leaves us only this one option. Once upon a time we'd have just cracked on and even gone for a pint with the guys.
  17. it's not simply overloading but you don't know how often a MEWP has had a large lump of tree battering down on its joints- lets face it- no one would tell the hire company that they may have damaged it:sneaky2:
  18. I'm guessing those trees are around 60 years old- anyone got a better guess
  19. So have they done what is in essence your work (responsibility) Is this a private estate with unadopted roads If so- you must be chuffed to have their help If it's adopted then why not leave them to it or is it that you will get paid by the estate so value their help. Is the worry that if you are getting paid then are they effectively working under your supervision. I would assume they do their own risk assessment and so it's down to them to stay safe. But your risk assessment would preclude working alongside anyone not wearing PPE. Have you checked whether they have relevant tickets? I guess you should have stopped working and told them to leave and unless they did you should have left the site (safe)- then phoned the council officer. I wouldn't know what to do at the time and similarly would be asking on here- sorry I'm no help at all. Hope someone else knows
  20. Mind you Why would you push a tree firm on an arborist website Does it make any sense?
  21. same here much more work in the winter:confused1:
  22. Think you're sensible. £75 a month is good Chgeck whether pcm or every 4 weekly- saves a shock if different to what you thought
  23. yes echo that have you streetworks its only a 2 day course for operative plus supervisor signs from jonesie i think best
